These are the Daily Tech Headlines for Friday, April 25, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. Apple is planning to shift all US iPhone production to India by the end of next year, doubling its output there. This move is due to rising costs from US tariffs on Chinese imports. Right now, 80% of the 60 million iPhones sold in the US are made in China, where Apple has a strong manufacturing base but is now diversifying its supply chain by partnering with Indian manufacturers like Tata Electronics. Even though imports from India face tariffs of 26%, there's progress towards a U S India trade agreement. Investors will be watching Apple's results next week to see how the US Tariffs have affected the company's supply chain. Intel CEO Lip Bu Tan announced during the Q1 2025 earnings call that the company will require employees to work from the office four days a week starting September 1st. This shift from their previous two day a week work from home policy is due to uneven adherence and Tan's belief that in person collaboration fosters better communication, decision making and connection among colleagues, while local leadership will share specific details and seek staff input. The move align intel with other tech giants like Amazon and Salesforce, who have also mandated a return to Office. Despite mixed evidence on productivity benefits and known negative impacts on employee satisfaction, Meta has laid off an unspecified number of employees in its Reality Labs division, including teams working in Oculus studios and hardware. The layoffs impacted the VR fitness game Supernatural, which Meta acquired for over $400 million. A Meta spokesperson stated that the changes aim to improve efficiency and focus on future mixed reality experiences while still deliver delivering great content. Despite the growth in smart glasses sales, Quest sales continue to struggle with the latest Quest 3s currently on sale for roughly 10% off. Ziff Davis, the digital media company that owns outlets like CNET and PCMag, is suing OpenAI for copyright infringement. The company alleges that OpenAI intentionally and relentlessly copied its content without permission, even though they had instructed web crawlers not to scrape their data. OpenAI allegedly used this content to train its AI models, including ChatGPT. Zif Davis is demanding that OpenAI stop using its content and destroy any data sets or models containing it. OpenAI responded by stating that the models are trained on publicly available data and are grounded in fair use. Intel and TSMC are exploring areas of collaboration as Intel CEO Lipp Bhutan and TSMC CEO CC Way met recently to discuss a potential partnership. Tan views TSMC as a valuable partner and has a long standing relationship with Wei and retired TSMC founder Morris Chang. Both Tan and Wei attended TSMC's annual technology conference in Silicon Valley this week. Microsoft has announced a fix for a known issue causing CPU spikes and increased power consumption when typing in recent versions of its classic Outlook email client for Windows. The issue has been widely reported by users since November and affects those in the semiannual channel who updated to outlook version 2406 build 1772620126 or later, while a fix is expected expected to roll out in early May for Beta channel users and mid to late May for current channel users. Microsoft suggests reverting to version 2405 as a temporary workaround, but cautions that there have been security updates since that version. Alphabet CEO Sundarpichai said the company's Waymo Robo taxi service may eventually offer its self driving taxis for personal ownership, despite challenges in the autonomous vehicle market, Waymo has steadily grown its fleet to over 700 vehicles, with 300 operating as uncrewed robo taxis in San Francis. While Pichai didn't provide specifics on the timeline or sales approach, he confirmed the possibility of personal ownership in the future. Microsoft revealed that it created a one minute video advertisement for its Surface Pro and Surface laptop using generative AI and released it on YouTube on January 30th without anyone noticing the AI element. The ad combines AI generated and real footage as some intricate movements like close ups of hands typing had to be shot live. Microsoft Team used AI tools to generate the script, storyboards and pitch deck, then used chatbots and image generators to create the images, which were later refined and used to generate the video. Tencent Music Entertainment Group is in advanced talks to acquire Chinese podcasting startup Ximelaya Inc. For $2.4 billion, aiming to accelerate its growth as a Chinese equivalent to Spotify. The deal, potentially combining cash and shares, could be finalized in the coming weeks, although discussions are ongoing and no final decisions have been made. Gimalaya, backed by companies including Tencent, Baidu and Sony, boast 303 million monthly active users and previously filed for a Hong Kong IPO in 2021. Tencent Music, with popular music apps like QQ Music and Cougao, has expanded through both organic growth and acquisitions, and its US listed shares have risen 17% this year, reaching a market value of $20.6 billion. And finally, Nintendo Switch 2 pre orders went live in the US and Canada on April 24th and if you were lucky, you may have been able to snag one before pre order SOL. As expected, the Switch 2 will be a pretty popular device as third party retailers like Walmart, Best Buy and GameStop have also listed their inventory as sold out or coming soon. The official launch day for the Switch 2 is June 5th.
