These are the daily Tech Headlines for Monday, August 4th, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. Apple is reportedly developing its own AI answer engine through a new team called Answers, Knowledge and Information. This engine, which could be a standalone app or integrated into existing Apple products like Siri and Safari, aims to respond to questions using web based information. Apple is actively recruiting for this team, seeking individuals with experience in search algorithms and engine development. This development comes as Apple is Already integr upgraded ChatGPT into Siri, though a more personalized AI update for Siri has been delayed and Apple may need to reassess its search engine agreement with Google following Google's antitrust defeat, Google has reversed its decision to discontinue support for all shortened Goo GL URLs on August 25th. While URLs that previously showed a deactivation message will still stop working, all other Goo GL links will remain functional. Google had initially announced the Aug. 25 deadline in July 2024, citing decreasing traffic to the L links, but now acknowledges that many links are embedded in various forms of content and will preserve them. A Miami jury held Tesla partially liable for a 2019 fatal crash involving its autopilot system, ordering the company to pay approximately $242.5 million in damages. The jury attributed one third of the blame to Tesla and two thirds to the driver, determining that neither braked effectively to prevent the collision that killed a pedestrian. Tesla intends to appeal, asserting the crash was inevitable regardless of autopilot and that the driver conf fault. This ruling represents a significant legal setback for the company's driver assistance technology. In other Tesla news, the company, once a leader in U.S. customer loyalty, with 73% of its owners buying another Tesla in June 2024, experienced a significant drop in this metric following CEO Elon Musk's endorsement of President Trump in July. This loyalty rate plummeted to 49.9% by March, falling below the industry average after Musk's involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency and subsequent government worker firings. Alth the rate has since recovered to 57.4% in May, placing it above the industry average. And comparable to Toyota, it still trails Chevrolet and Ford, marking it an unprecedented and rapid decline in customer loyalty, according to S and P analyst Tom Libby. Spotify is increasing premium subscription prices in several regions outside of the US Due to lower than expected earnings. New customers in Spain, Italy and Portugal have already seen a €1 monthly increase, while countries like France and Belgium, which recently had a price hike, are unaffected. Despite subscriber growth, Spotify's profit forecast missed analysts expectations, causing an 11.5% stock price drop, while CEO Daniel Ek had previously prioritized subscriber retention reports from April suggested upcoming price increases in Europe and Latin America. US pricing remains stable after increases in 2023 and 2024, following 12 years of unchanged prices. Anthropic has released OpenAI's access to its Claude AI models, citing terms of service violations, sources suggest Open for benchmarking its models and for internal coding tools. While Anthropic maintains this usage violates commercial terms, it will allow access for benchmarking and safety evaluations. OpenAI views its usage as industry standard and is disappointed by the decision. This action aligns with Anthropic's history of limiting competitor access, as seen with Windsurf. Now Cognition Lyft is collaborating with China's Baidu to introduce robo taxis in Europe's next year, beginning in Germany and the UK. But Baidu's RT6 robo taxis will operate on Lyft's platform, with plans to expand to thousands of vehicles across Europe. This move is bolstered by Lyft's recent acquisition of FreeNow, extending its reach to nine countries and over 180 cities outside of North America. Lyft will manage platform operations, customer service and fleet logistics, while Baidu will supply autonomous vehicles and technical knowledge. Character AI has launched a social feed on its mobile apps, allowing users to share AI characters, chat snippets, AI generated images and host live debates states using their generative AI model. Avatar FX CEO Karen Deep Singh stated that this blurs the line between content creation and consumption, joining other AI driven apps exploring social media features and finally, Nintendo raised the prices of its Switch consoles in the U.S. attributing the change to market conditions. The Original Switch, formerly $299.99, is now $339.99. The Switch OLED model increased from $349.99 to $399.99 and the Switch Lite went from $199 to 229 do $29.99. This follows a similar price hike in Canada on August 1 and occurred just one day after the White House administration imposed new reciprocal tariffs.
