These are the daily tech headlines for Thursday, October 16th, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. Apple recently updated its iPad Pro, Vision Pro and entry level MacBook Pro, equipping them with the new M5 chip for improved computing, graphics and AI tasks. While the devices retain their previous appearance and pricing, the iPad Pro now includes the N1 wireless chip and C1X modem, and the Vision Pro features a new headband. These releases follow last month's introduct of the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, upgraded AirPods and Apple Watches, effectively bolstering Apple's product offerings ahead of the crucial holiday shopping season. Following its summer update that included direct messages, threads is now expanding its capabilities to include group messaging for up to 50 individuals. This meta owned platform, a competitor to x, boasts over 400 million monthly active users and is rolling out group chats globally, including the users in the eu, where its messaging experience was previously delayed. With these group chats threads, users age 18 and older can share text posts, videos, GIFs and emojis, mirroring the functionality available on the public timeline. Microsoft is encouraging Windows 10 users to upgrade to Windows 11 by introducing new AI features, primarily an enhanced Copilot Assistant. This updated Copilot will use desktop and web applications to perform tasks and will include a Copilot Actions agent from multi step directives. Similar to AI models from other companies. Copilot Actions will be off by default and operate in a controlled environment, allowing user monitoring. Microsoft plans to gradually release these features, integrating them with File Explorer and providing redesigned shortcuts to attract users and increase Windows revenue. Uber Technologies Inc. Is introducing a new digital task job category for some US drivers this fall, allowing them to earn money by completing short assignments related to the company's data labeling business, a move aimed at capitalizing on the artificial intelligence boom. These tasks, which can be completed within minutes, currently include uploading documents like restaurant menu menus are recording audio samples with more options and varying payouts to be added over time. According to Chief Product Officer Sachin Cancel, Microsoft is reportedly planning to move the manufacturing of its Surface laptops and tablets, data center servers and some Xbox consoles out of China beginning in 2026. This shift, which includes components, parts and product assembly, is attributed to rising trade tensions between the US And China, as well as new threats of tariffs and export controls. Apple is also reportedly considering moving production of devices to Vietnam for similar reasons. Lyft is opening a new technology hub in Toronto in the latter half of next year, making it their second largest tech center after San Francisco. This office in Toronto's financial district will employ hundreds across various departments. This expansion is part of Lyft's strategy to grow its international presence and diversify beyond the US particularly as Canadian rides increased over 20% in the first half of 2025. Highlighting Toronto's significance since Lyft launched services there in 2017, we've got a couple of headlines from Spotify. First, the company is developing a song DNA feature discovered in the app's code by reverse engineer Jane Manchin Wong. It will allow users to explore music through its credits, including writers, collaborators, vocalists, engineers, lyricists, producers and composers. This feature would offer visual experiences, enabling users to navigate through credits, observe connections between individuals and delve into their diverse works. Spotify has also enhanced its AI DJ feature for premium subscribers, now allowing text based music music requests in both English and Spanish. This update responds to the rise in multimodal AI and enables discrete user interaction. The AI DJ also provides personalized prompt suggestions and can handle complex requests that combine genre, mood, artist or activity. The feature is now available in over 60 global markets. Apple has secured 650 megawatts of renewable energy contracts in Europe, including operational and upcoming wind and solar projects. This initiative aims to offset the energy consumption of Apple customers, which constitutes nearly one third of the company's carbon footprint. The new energy sources include solar farms in Greece, Latvia, Spain and Poland, along with wind farms in Romania, and a share of 129 megawatt solar wind portfolio in Italy. And finally, Samsung has reportedly abandoned its pursuit of an ultra thin edge phone, canceling the Galaxy S26 Edge and ceasing further production of the Galaxy S25 Edge due to disappointing sales. NewSpim indicates that the existing Galaxy S25 Edge will be discontinued once current stock is depleted, marking an end to Samsung's effort in this product line.
