These are the daily tech headlines for Friday, October 14, 2020. I'm Rich Strappolino. The information sources say Apple's upcoming mixed reality headset will include Iris ID to authenticate users. This would scan an iris using the same cameras. That will enable foveated rendering in the headset to track where users are looking for dynamic scene rendering. Previous reports say the headset will be announced sometime in 2023. Netflix announced its Basic with ads tier will launch in Canada and Mexico on November 1st. It comes to the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea and Brazil on November 3rd. And Spain's not left out. It gets it November 10th. It costs $6.99 a month in the US and includes 720p HD pricing on Netflix's ad free plans will remain the same. The company will partner with Nielsen on audience measurement. Google Fiber will Launch plans offering symmetrical 5 and 8 gigabit per second service. 5 gigabit plans cost $125 per month $150 a month for the 8 gigabit plans. Service comes with a Wi Fi 6 router, two mesh extenders and professional installation. It'll be available to existing customers in Utah, Kansas City and West Des Moines as early as next month, with plans for broader availability next year. Google showed off Project Starline at Google I o back in 2021, offering holographic video chats in a specialized booth. The company now opened an early access program to install Starline with enterprise partners. Previously, Starline booths were only available on Google's campus. Salesforce WeWork T Mobile and Hackensack Meridian Health will be among the partners testing it out at their facilities. App researcher Jane Manchin Wong discovered Twitter began testing letting users control who can mention them in tweets. Wong shared a screen with options to toggle on and off the ability to mention your account entirely, with a further option to limit mentions to accounts you follow. Apple announced it will launch a savings account for Apple card credit card holders in the coming months in partnership with Goldman Sachs. This account will be used to save daily cash cashback rewards from the Apple card and users will be able to transfer funds into the account as well. Apple says this will be a high yield account, but no word on the interest rate. Samsung announced owners of Galaxy devices will be able to onboard Matter compatible devices to both its own SmartThings and and Google Home ecosystems. This comes on top of Matter's Multi Admin feature, which allows a device in one ecosystem to be controlled by another. This partnership will show any devices already set up with Google home in the SmartThings app, rather than requiring each device to be set up individually. Meta filed a motion to waive the Federal Trade Commission's request for a preliminary injunction on its proposed acquisition of the VR fitness startup within in the Northern District of California. Meta said the FTC relied on pure speculation of a hypothetical future state in its filing and that there is vibrant competition in the fitness space and across VR within makes the fitness app supernatural. A court filing from Twitter states that Elon Musk is under federal investigation related to his takeover bid of the company. The filing doesn't state what agency is investigating Musk or what the focus is. The filing was an attempt to get Musk to hand over requested documents from a privilege log being withheld from Twitter. The log mentions a draft email to the U.S. securities and Exchange Commission and a presentation to the Federal Trade Commission. The SEC had questioned Musk on the acquisition in the past. Google began rolling out a change in how it will mark ads in search it will show a sponsored label in bold next to search ads, with the label appearing above the site URL rather than in the same line. This will roll out first to mobile and Google says it will start testing on desktop sometime in the future. The Department of Veteran affairs announced it will delay further rollout of its new electronic health records system, which had been set to expand to western Washington, Michigan and Ohio in Q1 2023. Testing on the system, developed by Oracle Cerner, began two years ago in Spokane, Washington and has since rolled out to five medical centers, according to emails obtained by the spokesman Review. In late September, a patient died due to not receiving a medication which was attributed to the Oracle cerner system. A VA Office of Inspector General report from June found 149 cases of harm linked to the system. Meta plans to expand a test of its AI powered video selfie age verification system to India and Brazil after launching it in the US earlier this year. Users can still verify AGE by providing an id. Meta also said it will roll out this age verification program to the UK and EU before the end of the year. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the group Guacamaya leaked 5 terabytes of classified documents from the Colombian government. The Data includes over 5 million emails and thousands of documents, including details on operations by the Australian Federal Police to stop international drug cartels. The Herald and the publication the Age informed AFP of the leak on October 4th. And finally, at Meta's Connect event, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that more customizable and detailed avatar models for Horizon Worlds would roll out next. In the announcement, Meta showed a video of a Zuckerberg avatar with legs. Right now avatars are just floating torsos. Meta issued a follow up statement on the feature saying to enable this preview of what's to come. The segment featured animations created from motion capture. So legs are coming, but they might not look exactly like that video, remember?
