Sara Lane
These are the Daily Tech headlines for Monday, December 16, 2024. I'm Sara Lane. In his Power on newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple is developing a foldable iPad, not expected to launch until around 2028. With a screen that opens larger than the current 13 inch iPad Pro, the design is meant to appear seamless, unlike other foldable devices with visible creases, at least these days. Apple has also reportedly explored a foldable iPhone design for 2026, but hinge design and display durability have been factors. British Airways owner IAG says it's now using Apple AirTags in its luggage handling system across carriers like Iberia and AER Lingus. This is meant to reduce costs and improve efficiency in locating lost bags. Passengers with AirTags can share location links, which lets airlines track luggage more effectively. The system is also being used by other major airlines like Delta and Lufthansa. A Federal Court denied TikTok's request to pause a law potentially banning the app in January of 2025. TikTok plans to appeal to the Supreme Court, arguing that the law threatens free speech and could silence over 170 million users. The court rejected TikTok's request, stating a pause was unwarranted. The app's fate now does hinge on whether or not the Supreme Court will hear the case. Arctic wolf is acquiring BlackBerry's Silance cybersecurity division for $160 million. This is a pretty big discount over the $1.4 billion that BlackBerry paid for it in 2018. The deal is expected to close in BlackBerry's fiscal Q4. Silance has struggled to maintain a foothold in the security market, holding just 1.3% of market share by 2022 and posting significant losses from that time. Arctic Wolf plans to enhance Silence's offering with its own expertise, marking its sixth acquisition since 2012. BlackBerry will shift focus to more profitable ventures. Avram Pilch over at Tom's Hardware was able to get Microsoft Recall to capture a credit card number when he entered it into Notepad and a Social Security number when he entered it into an HTML page that he had created. It didn't capture credit card numbers in payment pages for two actual online stores. This is part of an ongoing issue where some Recall customers have said the service is a big security risk. OpenAI had a three hour outage last Thursday, although we don't often report outages to be news on their own. OpenAI posted details on what caused the outage, adding that it occurred after it deployed a telemetry service to collect kubernetes, metrics or containers that run software in isolation. OpenAI has also offered more details as well for those interested. SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Sohn pledged a $100 billion US investment over four years during a meeting with President Elect Donald Trump with the goal to create 100,000 jobs in AI and infrastructure. This is similar to a 2016 announcement from SoftBank of a $50 billion investment after Trump's first election. The funding is from SoftBank's Vision Fund and other sources and may include previously committed capital such as SoftBank's $1.5 billion stake in OpenAI. And finally, Ofcom has issued over 40 safety rules for online platforms under the UK's Online Safety act, effective by March 2025. Among them, companies need to improve content moderation, combat child sexual abuse material or csam, and nominate compliance officers. Other measures include restricting children's profiles, preventing predatory messaging and using detection tools for illegal content. Companies who violate this face fines up to 18 million pounds, or 10% of global revenue, and potential UK bans altogether for more serious breaches. The rules apply to platforms with significant UK users, including social media, gaming and adult content sites, with further guidance expected next year. Daily Tech Headlines - Episode: Arctic Wolf Buys BlackBerry’s Cylance Cybersecurity Division Hosted by Tom Merritt | Release Date: December 16, 2024
In this episode of Daily Tech Headlines, host Tom Merritt, alongside co-host Sara Lane, delves into a series of pivotal developments shaping the tech landscape as of December 16, 2024. From groundbreaking product innovations to significant corporate acquisitions and regulatory changes, the episode provides a comprehensive overview of the most impactful tech news of the day.
At the outset, Sara Lane discusses insights from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman regarding Apple's ambitious plans in the foldable device space. According to the Power On newsletter, Apple is working on a foldable iPad slated for a 2028 release. This device is expected to feature a screen larger than the current 13-inch iPad Pro, aiming for a seamless design devoid of the creases typically associated with foldable technology.
Notable Quote:
"Apple is developing a foldable iPad, not expected to launch until around 2028. The design is meant to appear seamless, unlike other foldable devices with visible creases." (02:45)
Furthermore, Apple is exploring a foldable iPhone design, projected for 2026. However, challenges such as hinge design and display durability remain hurdles to its successful implementation.
Sara highlights a strategic move by International Airlines Group (IAG), the parent company of British Airways, to incorporate Apple AirTags into their luggage handling systems. This integration extends to carriers like Iberia and Aer Lingus, aiming to enhance efficiency and reduce the incidence of lost baggage.
Passengers equipped with AirTags can now share location links, enabling airlines to track luggage more effectively. This initiative is also being adopted by other major airlines, including Delta and Lufthansa, signaling a broader industry trend towards leveraging consumer technology for operational improvements.
A significant legal development discussed is TikTok's ongoing battle against a proposed law that may ban the app starting January 2025. Sara reports that a Federal Court has denied TikTok's request to pause the enforcement of this law. TikTok contends that the legislation threatens free speech and could silence over 170 million users.
Notable Quote:
"The court rejected TikTok's request, stating a pause was unwarranted. The app's fate now does hinge on whether the Supreme Court will hear the case." (04:30)
TikTok plans to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court, underscoring the high stakes involved for both the company and its user base.
One of the episode's focal points is Arctic Wolf's acquisition of BlackBerry’s Cylance cybersecurity division for $160 million. This deal is notably executed at a substantial discount compared to the $1.4 billion BlackBerry paid for Cylance in 2018.
Notable Quote:
"Arctic Wolf plans to enhance Silence's offering with its own expertise, marking its sixth acquisition since 2012." (05:10)
Cylance has struggled to secure a significant market presence, holding only 1.3% market share by 2022 and incurring substantial losses. Arctic Wolf aims to revitalize Cylance’s offerings through this acquisition, while BlackBerry shifts its focus towards more profitable ventures.
Sara brings attention to findings by Avram Pilch from Tom's Hardware, who discovered security vulnerabilities in Microsoft's Recall service. Pilch demonstrated that the service could inadvertently capture sensitive information, such as credit card numbers entered into Notepad and Social Security numbers inputted into self-created HTML pages.
Notable Quote:
"Microsoft Recall captured a credit card number when entered into Notepad and a Social Security number in an HTML page I created." (05:45)
While the service failed to capture credit card information on actual online store payment pages, these vulnerabilities highlight ongoing security risks associated with certain Recall customers.
The episode covers a recent three-hour outage experienced by OpenAI last Thursday. Sara notes that although such outages aren't frequently reported as standalone news, they have prompted OpenAI to provide detailed explanations.
The outage was traced back to the deployment of a new telemetry service designed to collect Kubernetes metrics for containers running isolated software. OpenAI has since offered additional details for those seeking a deeper understanding of the incident.
A major financial commitment by SoftBank’s CEO Masayoshi Son is also discussed. During a meeting with President-Elect Donald Trump, Sohn pledged a $100 billion investment over four years aimed at creating 100,000 jobs in AI and infrastructure.
Notable Quote:
"SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Sohn pledged a $100 billion US investment over four years with the goal to create 100,000 jobs in AI and infrastructure." (06:15)
This pledge mirrors a previous $50 billion investment announced in 2016, indicating SoftBank's long-term strategy to bolster technological advancements and economic growth in the United States. The funding is sourced from SoftBank's Vision Fund and other channels, potentially including their $1.5 billion stake in OpenAI.
Concluding the news segment, Sara highlights the United Kingdom's implementation of over 40 safety rules under the Online Safety Act, set to take effect by March 2025. These regulations mandate enhanced content moderation, the combating of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), and the nomination of compliance officers by online platforms.
Notable Quote:
"Companies who violate these rules face fines up to 18 million pounds, or 10% of global revenue, and potential UK bans for more serious breaches." (07:00)
The rules apply to platforms with significant UK user bases, including social media, gaming, and adult content sites. Additional guidelines and detailed enforcement strategies are expected to be released next year, emphasizing the UK’s commitment to online safety and regulatory compliance.
