These are the Daily Tech Headlines for Tuesday, April 22, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. ChatGPT search is rapid growth in Europe with 41.3 million average monthly active users in the six months ending March 31. May soon subject it to the EU's Digital Services Act. The DSA requires large online platforms to implement measures like allowing users to opt out of recommendation systems and data sharing with research. Non compliance could result in fines or suspension. Despite its growth and inroads against competitors like Google, concerns remain about the reliability of ChatGPT search compared to conventional search engines, particularly regarding accuracy in identifying articles and handling news content. In other ChatGPT news, the Washington Post has partnered with OpenAI to integrate its reporting into ChatGPT. The deal will allow ChatGPT to display summaries, quotes and links to Washington Post articles in response to user prompts, furthering the Post's goal of reaching audiences wherever they are. This partnership aligns with the Post's previous forays into generative AI, including using it for article summaries. The Post's owner, Jeff Bezos, recently announced a shift in editorial strategy towards advocating for personal liberties in free markets, making the partnership with OpenAI, given Amazon's AI investments unsurprising. This move also reflects a broader trend of news publishers partnering with OpenAI, with over 20 similar agreements globally. BlueSky, originally resistant to centralized verification, is now adopting an official verification system. The change comes in response to criticism of their previous domain based verification, which was seen as complicated and ineffective against impersonation, especially as the platform grew in popularity. The new system will grant blue check marks to authentic and notable accounts based on undisclosed criteria and will also allow trusted organizations like the New York Times to verify users. While direct applications for verification are not currently accepted, BlueSky still encourages domain based verification and plans to open a request form in the future. T Mobile is launching two new plans to replace its Go 5G Next and Go 5G plans. Both plans offer unlimited 5G and 4G LTE access, unlimited premium data and increased high speed hotspot data. The Experience More plan includes free T Satellite with Starlink service until the end of 2025, while the experience beyond plan offers even more high speed hotspot data and increased data travel. T Mobile also is offering a five year price guarantee on talk, text and data for both plans, as well as up to $800 to help customers switch from other carriers. Google Messages is rolling out sensitive content warnings to blur potentially nude images on Android devices. The feature is opt in for adults, but enabled by default for users under 18 with varying levels of control for supervised and unsupervised teens. The feature has two components, blurring received images that may contain nudity and warning users about the risk of sending such images. The image classification occurs on device and doesn't send data to Google servers. The feature is gradually rolling out and can be managed in the Google Messages settings. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and opposition Liberal leader Peter Dutton both expressed strong support for upcoming laws that will ban children under 16 years of age from using social media platforms like X, Facebook and Instagram and require social media companies to pay for local news hosted on their platforms In Australia, Albanese anticipates pressure from social media giants to ease the ban, which has bipartisan support and is set to take effect in December. Dutton echo Albanese's sentiments, emphasizing the need to hold multinational technology companies accountable and ensure children's safety online. Daily Tech Headlines - Episode Summary: ChatGPT Search May Soon Fall Under The EU’s Digital Services Act
Release Date: April 22, 2025
Hosts: Sarah Lane, Robb Dunewood, and Tom Merritt
In this episode of Daily Tech Headlines, Rob Dunwood delves into the latest developments in the tech world, covering a range of topics from regulatory changes affecting AI platforms to strategic partnerships between major companies. The episode provides insightful analysis on how these changes may influence user experiences, industry standards, and the broader technological landscape.
Rob begins by highlighting the impressive growth of ChatGPT in Europe, noting that it has amassed an average of 41.3 million monthly active users in the six months leading up to March 31, 2025. However, this rapid expansion comes with regulatory scrutiny as ChatGPT may soon fall under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA).
Rob Dunwood [01:53]: "ChatGPT search is experiencing rapid growth in Europe with 41.3 million average monthly active users in the six months ending March 31."
The DSA mandates that large online platforms implement measures such as allowing users to opt out of recommendation systems and restrict data sharing with research entities. Non-compliance could lead to significant fines or even suspension of services.
Rob Dunwood [01:53]: "The DSA requires large online platforms to implement measures like allowing users to opt out of recommendation systems and data sharing with research."
Despite ChatGPT's success against competitors like Google, there are ongoing concerns about its reliability, particularly in accurately identifying articles and handling news content. This regulatory move signifies a crucial point for AI-driven search platforms in ensuring transparency and user control.
Next, Rob discusses the strategic partnership between The Washington Post and OpenAI. This collaboration integrates the Post’s reporting directly into ChatGPT, enabling the AI to display summaries, quotes, and links to Washington Post articles in response to user queries.
Rob Dunwood [02:30]: "The Washington Post has partnered with OpenAI to integrate its reporting into ChatGPT, allowing the AI to display summaries, quotes, and links to articles."
This initiative aligns with the Post's broader strategy to reach audiences across various platforms, leveraging generative AI for enhanced content delivery. Jeff Bezos, the owner of the Washington Post, recently announced an editorial shift towards advocating for personal liberties in free markets, making this partnership a natural extension of Amazon's significant investments in AI technologies.
Furthermore, this move is part of a global trend, with over 20 similar agreements between news publishers and OpenAI, reflecting a shift in how news content is disseminated and consumed in the digital age.
The conversation then turns to BlueSky, a social media platform that initially resisted centralized verification methods. In response to growing criticism over their domain-based verification, which was deemed complex and ineffective against impersonation, BlueSky is now implementing an official verification system.
Rob Dunwood [03:15]: "BlueSky is adopting an official verification system in response to criticism of their previous domain-based method."
The new system will issue blue check marks to authentic and notable accounts based on undisclosed criteria, enhancing trust and security on the platform. Trusted organizations, such as The New York Times, will be authorized to verify their users, further strengthening the verification process. Although BlueSky is not currently accepting direct verification applications, they remain open to domain-based verification and plan to introduce a request form in the future.
T-Mobile is introducing two new plans designed to replace their existing Go 5G Next and Go 5G offerings. The new plans boast unlimited 5G and 4G LTE access, unlimited premium data, and increased high-speed hotspot data.
Rob Dunwood [04:00]: "T-Mobile is launching two new plans offering unlimited 5G and 4G LTE access, along with enhanced hotspot data."
The Experience More plan includes complimentary T Satellite with Starlink service until the end of 2025, while the Experience Beyond plan offers even more high-speed hotspot data and increased data travel options. Both plans feature a five-year price guarantee on talk, text, and data, and T-Mobile is incentivizing customers to switch from other carriers by offering up to $800 in assistance.
Addressing user safety, Google Messages is rolling out a new feature that provides sensitive content warnings by blurring potentially nude images on Android devices. This feature is opt-in for adults but is enabled by default for users under 18, with varying levels of control for supervised and unsupervised teens.
Rob Dunwood [04:30]: "Google Messages is introducing sensitive content warnings to blur potentially nude images, enhancing user safety."
The feature operates by performing image classification on the device, ensuring that no data is sent to Google servers, thereby maintaining user privacy. Users can manage this feature through the Google Messages settings, and its gradual rollout aims to provide a safer messaging environment without compromising on user experience.
In regulatory news, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton have voiced strong support for upcoming laws that will ban children under 16 from using major social media platforms like X, Facebook, and Instagram. Additionally, these laws will require social media companies to compensate for local news hosted on their platforms.
Rob Dunwood [05:00]: "Australia is set to implement laws banning children under 16 from using major social media platforms and mandating payments for local news."
These regulations have garnered bipartisan support and are scheduled to take effect in December. Both leaders emphasized the need to hold multinational technology companies accountable and ensure the online safety of children. Prime Minister Albanese anticipates resistance from social media giants, but the bipartisan nature of the support underscores the government's commitment to regulating digital spaces for younger users.
Rob highlights the partnership between Delta Air Lines and Uber, which now allows Delta SkyMiles members to earn miles when using Uber services. This collaboration is designed to benefit both companies by offering incentives to Delta's customers while boosting Uber's airport-related business.
Rob Dunwood [05:30]: "Delta SkyMiles members can now earn miles when they use Uber services, enhancing the value of both platforms."
Starting Tuesday, SkyMiles members can link their accounts to earn miles on Uber Eats orders over $40, uberX rides to and from airports, and premium Uber rides. Rob Dunwood [06:00]: "Duolingo's new chess course uses short puzzles and mini matches to make learning chess accessible to everyone."
