These are the Daily Tech Headlines for Wednesday, April 16, 2025. I'm Sarah Lane. The U.S. cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, known as CISA, has extended MITRE's contract by 11 months to prevent disruption to the common vulnerabilities and exposures CVE program. Mitre warned Tuesday night that funding for CVE and CWE was set to expire Wednesday. Today, members of the CVE board also launched the CVE Foundation, a nonprofit meant to secure the program's long term independence. Meanwhile, the EU's ENISA has started its own vulnerability database to broaden global efforts. Nvidia announced a 5.5 billion charge against the company tied to halted exports of its H20AI chips to China and other countries due to new US government licensing requirements. The latest restrictions are part of broader AI related export controls, raising concerns about Nvidia's growth, especially with China as a very key market. In other Nvidia news, the RTX 5060 Ti launches today April 16, starting at $379 with either 8 gigs or 16 GB of VRAM options. The 299 RTX 5060 arrives in May, both supporting DLSS4 multi frame generation and PCIe Gen 5, basically delivering up to 25% better performance over previous generations, the Wall Street Journal sources say Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg tried to settle the FTC's antitrust case against the company for 450 million, far below the agency's $30 billion demand. The ongoing case accuses Meta of using its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp to eliminate competition. Meta reportedly raised its offer to around $1 billion to settle out of court, but FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson rejected that. Grok, which is Xai's chatbot, now includes Grok Studio, a canvas like tool for creating documents, code and simple apps. Users can collaborate with the bot in a side by side workspace, and a new Google Drive integration can handle file attachments like docs and spreadsheets. TikTok announced it's launching Footnotes, a crowdsourced fact checking feature not unlike X's Community Notes, letting users add context to videos without changing moderation policies. The system uses a ranking algorithm to find consensus across differing viewpoints and is starting with a limited contributor program. In the US Google is phasing out country specific search domains, for example google.co.uk and redirecting all traffic to google.com the company says location based results are now accurate enough to make separate domains unnecessary, but some users may still see mismatched results in AI generated summaries. China has accused three alleged U.S. nSA operatives of launching cyber attacks on infrastructure during the Asian Games in Harbin back in February. The targets are purported to include games, related systems, critical services in Hang Xiang province and tech giant Huawei. China claims the attacks caused serious harm. And finally, Google launched its AI video generator VO2 for Gemini advanced subscribers meant for short high res videos from text prompts. VO2 has improved motion and realism, including digital watermarks and offering direct sharing to TikTok and YouTube. Google One AI Premium users also get access to Whisk Animate, which turns images into videos.
