It's available to ChatGPT Pro users with the 100 query month limit using a specialized version of OpenAI's O3 reasoning model for web browsing, data analysis and document review, designed to give detailed and citation backed outputs. Sounds great, but the feature is web only for now with mobile and desktop support coming soon and plans to expand to plus, team and enterprise users. It's also only text only for now, although OpenAI says it plans to add embedded images, data visualizations and other analytic outputs soon. Microsoft announced in a support document that the free VPN service included with Microsoft Defender for Microsoft 365 personal and family subscriptions will be retired on February 28. The VPN, available in the US, UK, Canada and Germany, works on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. For now, Microsoft Defender will still offer data and device protection, identity theft monitoring and credit monitoring in the US Android users are recommended to remove the VPN profile. Microsoft also added Copilot to both plans, increasing prices to $99.99 per year for personal or $129.99 for family. Subscribers can also switch to a classic plan if they want to save money. Bitcoin's mining difficulty decreased on January 27th for the first time since September of 2024, driven by an Arctic blast in the US that raised energy costs and reduced mining profitability. This is according to Luxor. The US is currently responsible for 46% of the global hash rate, but saw higher electricity prices due to renewable energy reliance and natural gas demand. Mining firms like Riot Platforms are diversifying into AI and high performance computing, with hash rates expected to stabilize as weather in the US improves. The Beatles won their eighth competitive Grammy on February 2 with the song now and Then. It was awarded Best Rock Performance, marking the first Grammy win for a song at least partially created with AI. The track was based on a late 1970s John Lennon demo, then was completed in 2021, using machine learning to isolate and clean up the vocals. Contributions from Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison were also added. In the mid-90s, McCartney clarified that no synthetic elements were created. AI was only used to enhance the existing recordings. India's electric two wheeler market grew at 24% from December into January with REG rising to 91,264 units. This is according to Vahan Data. Ola Electric led the market with 22,656 units sold, securing a 25% market share. That's ahead of TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto, but they're also players. Athar Energy's sales also rose 15% to 12,101 units, though its market share dropped to 13.2%. Specialized teams in Germany's Bay of Lubeck are clearing World War II era munitions. That's naval mines, bombs, artillery shells dumped after the war, posing environmental risks as they corrode this 100 million euro government funded project uses underwater vehicles and aims to develop scalable automated disposal methods, including a floating incineration facility. Research shows widespread contamination from these munitions, raising concerns about long term ecological damage if they were left unaddressed. Apple has agreed to settle a $20 million lawsuit to resolve claims that some older Apple Watch batteries swelled over time, potentially damaging other key components like the display. The lawsuit was filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California and alleged that the issue affected Apple Watch first gen, Series 1, Series 2 and Series 3 models Finally, a grocery store in Costa Rica has been called Super Mario since 2013. What does that mean? Well, Nintendo didn't like it. When Mario's son Charlito went to renew their trademark registration, he discovered that Nintendo had filed an objection. Costa Rica's National Register ruled in the grocery store's favor because Nintendo does not operate grocery stores, nor was the company's signage in any way similar to Nintendo's. This development underscores OpenAI's commitment to evolving ChatGPT into a more robust research tool, catering to professionals requiring detailed analytical support.
Microsoft announced in a recent support document that it will discontinue the free VPN service bundled with Microsoft Defender for Microsoft 365 personal and family subscriptions by February 28.
Sarah Lane [03:00]: "The VPN service, available in select regions, will be phased out, prompting users to seek alternative solutions for secure browsing."
Implications:
This move reflects Microsoft's strategy to refine its cybersecurity offerings while adjusting pricing structures to incorporate enhanced features like Copilot.
Bitcoin's mining difficulty experienced a notable decrease on January 27th, marking the first decline since September 2024. This shift is attributed to an Arctic blast in the United States, which led to increased energy costs and diminished mining profitability.
Sarah Lane [04:20]: "The Arctic weather spike in the US not only raised electricity prices but also pushed mining firms like Riot Platforms to diversify into AI and high-performance computing."
Details:
This development highlights the interplay between environmental factors and the economics of cryptocurrency mining, emphasizing the need for adaptability within the industry.
The Beatles clinched their eighth competitive Grammy on February 2 with the song "Now and Then," lauded for being the first Grammy-winning track partially created using artificial intelligence.
Sarah Lane [05:30]: "The track, built upon a late 1970s John Lennon demo, was completed in 2021 with machine learning techniques that isolated and refined the original vocals."
Highlights:
The Beatles' achievement underscores the evolving relationship between technology and music, paving the way for future collaborations that honor artistic legacy while embracing innovation.
India's electric two-wheeler sector witnessed substantial growth from December to January, expanding at a 24% rate with registrations (REG) reaching 91,264 units, according to Vahan Data.
Sarah Lane [06:10]: "Ola Electric spearheaded the market with 22,656 units sold, capturing a 25% market share and outpacing competitors like TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto."
Market Insights:
This robust growth signals a pivotal shift towards sustainable mobility solutions in India, reflecting broader global trends towards electrification.
Specialized teams in Germany's Bay of Lübeck are engaged in the hazardous task of clearing World War II-era munitions, including naval mines, bombs, and artillery shells. This 100 million euro government-funded initiative utilizes underwater vehicles to develop scalable automated disposal methods, including a floating incineration facility.
Sarah Lane [06:45]: "The environmental risks posed by these corroding munitions are significant, with research indicating widespread contamination that could lead to long-term ecological damage if not addressed."
Project Objectives:
This initiative highlights Germany's commitment to environmental stewardship and historical responsibility, leveraging technology to mitigate legacy pollution challenges.
Apple has agreed to a $20 million settlement resolving claims that certain older Apple Watch models experienced battery swelling, which could damage other components like displays. The lawsuit was filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California and involved the first-generation Apple Watch, Series 1, Series 2, and Series 3.
Sarah Lane [07:20]: "The affected Apple Watches showed swollen batteries that posed risks to device integrity, leading to legal action and the subsequent settlement."
Settlement Details:
This lawsuit underscores the importance of battery safety and longevity in wearable technology, prompting manufacturers to prioritize durable and reliable power solutions.
In an unusual trademark case, a Costa Rican grocery store operating under the name "Super Mario" has successfully defended its registration against Nintendo's objections. When attempting to renew the trademark, Nintendo contested the usage, but Costa Rica's National Register ruled in favor of the store.
Sarah Lane [07:50]: "The decision was based on the argument that Nintendo does not operate grocery stores, and the store's signage did not infringe upon Nintendo's trademarks."
Case Highlights:
This case illustrates the complexities of international trademark law and the importance of contextual relevance in trademark registrations.
