These are the daily tech headlines for Wednesday, November 19th, 2025. I'm Sarah Lane. Judge James Boasberg ruled that Meta is not a social networking monopolist in the FTC's long running antitrust case targeting Meta's Instagram and WhatsApp acquisitions. Boasberg said the FTC failed to show that Meta holds monopoly power today, with user behavior shifting towards video apps like TikTok and YouTube. The decision blocks the FTC's attempt to force divestitures and concludes that Meta now faces broad, credible competition in social media. The Netherlands paused its move to seize Chinese owned chip maker Nixperia following a six week EU China standoff disrupting global car production. Economic Affairs Minister Vincent Caramons called the suspension a goodwill gesture after China lifted its export ban on Experia chips and resumed shipments to automakers like Volkswagen and Honda. The original seizure was meant to protect European chip capacity. Both sides say that talks have improved, though Dutch officials say they could reinstate the order over future risks. TikTok has a new setting that lets users decide how much AI generated content appears in their for you feed. In Manage Topics, users can now move a slider to see less or more AI content. TikTok is also testing invisible watermarking to better tag AI generated videos, since existing C2PA metadata can be stripped when clips are re uploaded elsewhere. The company is also launching a $2 million AI literacy fund to support educational efforts. The EU is pulling back parts of the GDPR and delaying key AI act rules following pressure from the US and some big tech companies. The proposal would let companies share anonymized data more easily and let AI firms train models on personal data if they follow other GDPR requirements. High risk AI rules get a longer grace period until supporting standards are in place. The plan also reduces cookie pop ups and centralizes AI oversight. Adobe announced its buying digital marketing platform semrush for around $1.9 billion. The deal would fold Semrush's SEO and brand visibility tools into Adobe's platform, including helping brands surface in AI generated search results. The acquisition is expected to close in the first half of 2026, pending regulatory and shareholder approval. Dish Network is cutting the price of its 24 hour Sling TV day pass to $1 through Nov. 30 after a federal judge denied Disney's request to to block Slings short term passes, finding no likely success on breach of contract claims or irreparable harm. The day pass gives access to Sling Orange networks, including espn, TNT and Disney Channel without long term commitments. Disney says it will contest the case in trial. Spanish firm Multiverse Computing announced that it created Deep Seek R1 Slim, a version of the Chinese AI reasoning model Deepseek R1 that is 55% smaller and claims to remove state imposed censorship. The team says it used Quantum Inspired Tensor Networks while preserving performance, letting it answer politically sensitive questions and selectively removing biases or adding knowledge and finally today Meta is notifying Australian users under the age of 16 that their Facebook, Instagram and Threads accounts will be deactivated by December 10 due to a government mandated social media ban. Users will get 14 days notice through email, SMS and in app messages and can either download their content or delete their accounts. Accounts that aren't deleted can be restored once somebody turns 16. Messenger access is not affected. Meta says it will use age estimation and verification tools, but does expect some errors. TikTok X, YouTube, Snapchat, Reddit and Kik also affected by this ban.
