These are the Daily Tech Headlines for Monday, April 21st, 2025. I'm Sarah Lane. Riot Games says that Valorant Mobile is officially on the way, launching first in China with pre registration for a play test already open. The game is being developed by Chinese studio Lightspeed, but there is no word on a global release. Valorant Mobile was first announced in 2021 following the success of the original PC game. Attackers exploited a weakness in Google systems to send fake emails that passed domain keys, identified mail or DKIM security checks and appeared to come from Google, tricking users into giving up their credentials. The attack use Google OAuth apps and sites.google.com to create convincing phishing pages. Google initially said the process was working as intended, but is now working on a fix. After acknowledging the risk, Lego has opened a $1 billion factory in Vietnam that's its second in Asia and sixth globally to support long term growth in the region. The facility is set to run fully on renewable energy by early 2026. The move also strengthens Lego's sustainability efforts as eco friendly production becomes a key competitive factor in the toy industry. Airbnb announced it will now automatically show users the full cost of a stay. That's all fees, but before taxes up front in search results. This update replaces the old optional toggle and is meant to make pricing more transparent worldwide. Airbnb is also offering new tools for hosts to better compare prices and see what guests are paying for in competing locations. Chinese e commerce marketplace apps Dhgate and Taobao jumped to the number two and number five spots among free iPhone apps in the US last week. This this is at least in part coming from a variety of TikTok videos from Chinese manufacturers claiming that many luxury goods clothes, handbags, shoes, accessories are made in China, then shipped to places like Italy and France for repackaging and sold at marked up prices. The more you know Google launched Gemini 2.5 Flash in Preview, a smaller AI model meant to improve dynamic thinking more quickly and offering developers more control over cost and reasoning depth. It replaces the older 2.0 flash in the Gemini app and has adjustable thinking budgets. Google wants feedback to help streamline the user experience and move the 2.5 series towards general release soon. Amazon is reportedly moving its TV hardware away from Android, with plans to launch its first streaming device running the VegaOS later this year. The Linux based system could eventually replace Fire OS across Amazon's devices with the Echo Show 5, the Echo Hub and the Echo Spot already running on Vega. Amazon is also said to be working to get major publishers to bring their apps to the new platform. And finally today the FTC has sued Uber, accusing the company of deceptive billing and cancellation practices related to its Uber 1 subscription service. Claiming that Uber misled customers about savings, made it difficult to cancel memberships and charge users without consent, violating the FTC act and the Restore Online Shoppers Confidence Act. According to the FTC, Uber 1 costs $9.99 per month or $96 per year, and had about 30 million subscribers as of December. A recent security breach has exposed weaknesses in Google's email systems. Attackers exploited vulnerabilities to send fraudulent emails that successfully bypassed DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) security checks, misleading users into compromising their credentials. These phishing attempts utilized Google OAuth apps and sites.google.com to create convincing counterfeit pages. Initially, Google maintained that their processes were functioning as intended but has since acknowledged the risks and is actively working on a fix.

Chinese e-commerce giants Dhgate and Taobao have surged to the number two and number five spots respectively among free iPhone apps in the United States over the past week. This ascent is partly attributed to viral TikTok videos showcasing Chinese manufacturers' practices—claiming that many luxury items are produced in China, then shipped to countries like Italy and France for repackaging and resale at premium prices. This marketing strategy has resonated with US consumers, boosting the apps' popularity and downloads.
