These are the daily tech headlines for Thursday, February 5, 2026. I'm Rob Dunwood. Google's AI chatbot Gemini reached over 750 million monthly active users in Q4 2025, up from 650 million the previous quarter, though it still trails ChatGPT's estimated 810 million monthly active users. The growth is partly attributed to the launch of Gemini 3, which CEO Sund Pichai noted was a positive driver for the company, helping Alphabet surpass $400 billion in annual revenue. Google is trying to maintain this momentum with new, more affordable AI subscriptions and a continued investment, including the introduction of the Ironwood TPU AI accelerator chip. AMD CEO Lisa Su announced that Microsoft's next generation Xbox console, which features a semi custom AMD system on the chip, is progressing well for a potential 2027 launch earlier than the 20 data suggested by prior leaks. This console is part of a multi year partnership between Microsoft and AMD focused on co engineering silicon for devices including future handhelds and integrating AI and machine learning into Xbox games. The new console is expected to be a hybrid game platform utilizing both local hardware and cloud computing, with the earlier launch possibly driven by slower than expected sales of the current Xbox X and S models. A Senate inquiry is scrutinizing Meta over allegations it delayed child safety protections to prioritize user engagement. Unsealed court documents so Senators questioning CEO Mark Zuckerberg on why a 2019 plan to make all teen accounts private by default was reportedly abandoned after initial internal analysis suggested that it would likely smash engagement. Additionally, a bipartisan group is demanding transparency on Meta's handling of dangerous content, especially after a former executive's testimony highlighted a high threshold for suspending accounts involved in solicitation, suggesting business metrics may have outweighed user safety. European security officials are alarmed by Russian space vehicles Luck 1 and Luck 2, which have aggressively shadowed and intercepted unencrypted communications from over a dozen key European geostationary satellites for three years, escalating since the invasion of Ukraine. This signals intelligence targets older, vulnerable satellites to record command data. Officials fear Moscow could use this data to compromise sensitive information, mimic ground operations to manipulate satellite tr, potentially causing crashes or coordinate covert attacks like ground based jamming. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius deems this a fundamental threat and part of Russia's escalating hybrid warfare. Local space services, founded by former Google and NASA executive Milo Medin, is a new Starlink competitor cleared by the FCC to launch over 4,000 broadband satellites by 2035, with half acquired within seven years. The company, which began fundraising in 2023, aims to launch its first satellite in 2020. High speed Internet Starlink dominates the market, operating about 9,600 of 14,000 functioning satellites and is expected to be approved for around 7,500 more. Despite requesting a million, the Euspan space agency forecasts 100,000 satellites in orbit by 2030. SpaceX is significantly expanding its profitable Starlink business ahead of a potential ipo, with plans for a proprietary Starlink mobile device optimized for neural networks, a direct to device Internet service and a space tracking service. These initiatives, which support Elon MUS vision of orbiting data centers and follow the XAI merger capitalized on the company's satellite production and reusable rockets. While Starlink is a major revenue driver, contributing an estimated 50% to 80% of last year's $15 to $16 billion in revenue, the potential Starlink mobile device faces expert skepticism regarding its ability to compete with established mobile network operators. Anthropic super bowl ads mocked OpenAI's plan to add advertisements to the free tier of ChatGPT by showing a rival chatbot inserting irrelevant ad, successfully provoking a reaction from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Altman posted a lengthy rant calling Anthropic dishonest and authoritarian, defending the necessity of their ad supported tier, while baselessly claiming Anthropic's product is only for rich people and that they try to control what people do with AI. The family of 20 year old Samuel Turnbullt is suing Tesla for wrongful death, alleging that the defective electronic door handles on his Model Y prevented his escape from a fiery crash on October 29, 2025. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. district Court in Massachusetts, claims Tesla was grossly negligent and cites at least 15 similar fatalities since 2016. The door handles are under increasing scrutiny with a federal investigation by the NHTSA and a ban in China despite Tesla's inclusion of manual releases. Tesla is reportedly redesigning the handles to combine the electric and manual releases into a single button and finally, Spotify announced an unexpected expansion beyond its audiobooks business. On Thursday, the company revealed a partnership with online retailer bookshop.org to begin selling physical books directly on its streaming platform. This move shows Spotify is doubling down on new features to better compete with rival streaming services from tech giants like Apple and Amazon.
