My dad works in B2B marketing. He came by my school for Career Day and said he was a big roas man. Then he told everyone how much he loved calculating his return on ad spend. My friends still laugh at me to this day.

These are the Daily Tech headlines for Friday, November 15th, 2024. I'm Rob Dunwood. GM self driving company Cruz faces a $500,000 fine from the Department of Justice for failing to disclose details about a crash involving one of its robo taxis in October 2023. A cruise vehicle struck a pedestrian who had been hit by another car and pushed into its path. The company also paid $112,500 in June to the California Public Utilities Commission to avoid litigation, followed by a $1.5 million fine to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. As part of the agreement with the doj, crews must cooperate with investigations, implement safety measures, and report on its progress. Additional penalties may be imposed as the incident is also under investigation by the securities and Exchange Commission. The ChatGPT app for Windows is now available to all Windows 10 and 11 users. After initially being limited to those with ChatGPT plus subscriptions. The app allows users to open a companion window on their PCs, allowing them to easily use the AI Chatbot alongside with other Windows programs. OpenAI is also upgrading the ChatGPT app for macOS, which became widely available to all users in June. The big improvement is that OpenAI is giving the app the ability to read computer code from third party apps. TikTok has partnered with Getty Images to enhance its AI powered ad creation tool, Symphony Creative Studio. Advertisers can now use licensed Getty images and videos to generate AI powered ads, including realistic AI avatars. Symphony Creative Studio simplifies ad creation by generating videos from product descriptions, adding AI avatars and providing AI powered dubbing. The tool also enables the creation of multiple ad variations and remixing of existing content. Ex AI owner Elon Musk amended his lawsuit against chat GBT maker OpenAI, adding more antitrust claims against the company and including Microsoft and others as defendants in the newly filed complaint. Lawyers for Musk argue that OpenAI is now actively trying to eliminate competitors like Xai, extracting promises from investors not to fund them. It's also allegedly unfairly benefiting from Microsoft's infrastructure and expertise and what Musk Council describes as a quote, de facto merger, end quote. As we mentioned at the top of Daily Tech News show yesterday, Microsoft has finally released generic install ISOs for ARM versions of Windows 11. This will allow users to clean, install or reinstall on new hardware like Copilot Plus PCs with Snapdragon X Plus and Elite chips, as well as setting up virtual machines on ARM based PCs and Macs. You can grab a copy of Windows 11 for ARM based PCs over on the Microsoft software download page. Google Maps is now allowing users to search for products directly from within the app. Users can type product names in the search bar to bring up nearby stores where they may be able to find what they're looking for. Google has also updated maps to allow you to report and see delays impacting your transit lines, as well as show more details such as alternate transit routes and subway station entrances. Snapchat is making it easier for parents to request their teens real time location directly from within the family center. Parents will soon see an option in the family center to request their teens location locations and vice versa. They'll also be able to more easily view who else their child is sharing their location with. The feature is rolling out in the coming weeks, along with other location and privacy tools such as the ability to set up an automatic travel alert that notifies family members when loved ones have arrived or left from a designated location such as home or school. The new location features are accessible by opting in and are limited to people who are already added as friends. Facebook is shifting its focus from likes and shares to views as the primary metric for measuring content performance. This change aligns with Instagram's approach and applies to all content types, including photos, text posts and videos. By adopting a consistent metric, Facebook aims to provide creators with a clearer understanding of their content's reach and engagement. While this move may benefit brands, its impact on individual users remains uncertain. And finally, UK telecom operator Virgin Media 02 has developed an AI powered scambaiter named Daisy. This the AI tool is designed to frustrate fraudsters by engaging them in lengthy, nonsensical conversations. Daisy, mimicking the voice of an elderly woman, can discuss fabricated family members, hobbies, and even provide fake bank details. By wasting scammers time, Daisy aims to disrupt their operations and potentially deter future attempts. OT has successfully deployed Daisy, with some calls lasting up to 40 minutes.
