Google has alerted all of the roughly two and a half billion Gmail users about the hacking group Shiny Hunters who exploited a Salesforce breach to target Google accounts. This group, known for previous high profile breaches, is using publicly available business information and impersonating IT support to gain access. Google confirmed successful intrusions due to compromised passwords and notified affected users on August 8. All users, however, are urged to be vigilant, update passwords and enable two factor authentication. TikTok parent company ByteDance plans a new employee share buyback program, valuing the company at over 330 billion doll up from $315 billion six months ago. The increase is due to 25% year on year revenue growth in the second quarter reaching $48 billion, mainly from the Chinese market. The buyback, expected to come sometime this fall, reinforces ByteDance's status as the top social media company by revenue, despite pressure to sell its US operations. Samsung is holding a virtual Unpacked event on September 4th at 5:30am Eastern Standard Time where it will introduce new devices including the Galaxy Tab and S11 Ultra Tablets, which are anticipated to have AMOLED screens MediaTek Dimensity 9400 processors and improved RAM and battery life. The event will also unveil the budget friendly Galaxy S25FE, featuring an enhanced 12 megapixel selfie camera, a larger 4900mAh battery and quicker wired charging. The event will be streamed live on Samsung's YouTube channel and website. Microsoft's CoPilot AI is now integrated into Samsung's 2025 lineup of TVs and smart monitors, features like movie suggestions and episode recaps. The AI is visualized as an animated personified chickpea and is accessible via the Samsung Tizen OS home screen and other platforms activatable by voice or remote. A personalized experience is available upon signing in. This integration is rolling out across Samsung 2025 TV models and smart monitors with future expansion to LG TVs plan. YouTube TV and Fox have reached a temporary agreement to keep Fox channels, including Fox News and Fox Sports available to subscribers. This prevents a blackout, particularly important before the college football season starts, featuring the Texas vs Ohio State game on Fox. The previous dispute involved YouTube accusing Fox of excessive demands and Fox accusing Google of exploiting its influence. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr had urged a quick resolution Microsoft is expanding access to Xbox Cloud gaming and PC games for Xbox Game Pass Core and standard subscribers, moving beyond the current Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Exclusive. This update is being tested through the Xbox Insider program and allows subscribers to stream cloud playable games and access PC versions of select titles. This aligns with Microsoft's goal of making Xbox Cloud gaming more affordable and accessible, possibly leading to a future free ad supported version. Users can join the Xbox Insiders program to test these features. Credit reporting agency TransUnion announced a data breach impacting over 4.4 million customers due to an unauthorized access to a third party application. While TransUnion states no credit information was accessed, they haven't provided proof or specified the type of personal data stolen. The incident is part of a recent increase in cyber attacks, with other companies like Google and Cisco also reporting breaches, some linked to the extortion group Shiny Hunters. Though the Transusion perpetrators are unknown, the US Commerce Department is now distributing US GDP data on public blockchains, including Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana. This initiative, which places a cryptographic hash of the data on the blockchains for integrity verification, is an additional channel for publishing economic data, not a replacement. This move signifies the US Government's endorsement of blockchain technology. Mike Cahill, CEO of Doro Labs, noted that this development means government data now lives on blockchains allowing real time market participation. WhatsApp is launching Writing Help, an AI feature that uses Meta's private processing to help users rephrase, proofread and change the tone of their messages. This tool offers various tone options like Professional, Funny and others, and is accessible via the new Pencil icon. It aims to encourage in app AI use and is currently rolling out in English in select countries. And finally, Typad, the long running blogging service launched all the way back in 2003, is shutting down on September 30th. It stopped new signups in 2020, but supported existing users until this recent announcement. After September 30th, users will lose access to their accounts and content. Users can export their content in movable type import format for WordPress and Typad will stop charging subscriptions on August 31st with prorated refunds for recent payments.
