These are the Daily Tech Headlines for Wednesday, June 25, 2025 I'm Sarah Lane. Google launched Gemini CLI, an open source command line AI tool that connects its Gemini models directly to developers terminals. It's meant for natural language coding tasks like debugging, feature creation and command execution, and supports broader functions like video generation and research using Google's other AI tools under the permissive Apache 2.0 license. Gemini CLI is designed to compete with tools like OpenAI's Code CLI and Anthropic's Claude Code with free usage limits to encourage adoption, several major automakers, including Audi, Mercedes Benz, Volvo, Polestar and Renault, have rejected support for CarPlay Ultra. That's Apple's next gen in car system. Aston Martin and Porsche are on board, but others are choosing to monetize their own in car services, proprietary systems and subscription models. Fairphone launched the Fairphone 6, a smaller, lighter and more modular version of its repairable smartphone with a 4415mAh swappable battery, a Snapdragon 7S Gen 3 chip, 256GB of storage and a 120Hz OLED display, plus a five year warranty and eight years of software support and a new Fairphone Moments mode to minimize distractions. Available now in Europe for €599 and in the US through Mirena with EOS for $899. Databricks and Perplexity AI co founder Andy Kunwinsky announced the Laude Institute, a $100 million research initiative focused on AI for social good. The nonprofit will fund projects through two programs, Slingshots Fast grants for early stage research and Moonshots larger grants tackling health care, workforce reskilling science and civil discourse. It's also backing foundational AI work, including a $15 million grant to UC Berkeley's upcoming AI Systems Lab. Insta360 launched the Mic Air, a $50 wireless microphone about the size of an Apple AirTag. Weighing 7.9 grams. It offers up to 10 hours of battery life, supports a 300 meter range through an optional USB receiver, and can connect over Bluetooth to Insta360's action cams. It's designed for solo creators with onboard controls, but the Bluetooth use does shorten battery life and range. A $70 bundle includes the receiver as well. Ring is rolling out video descriptions, an AI feature for Ring Home Premium subscribers that turns motion alerts into detailed summaries such as a dog is tearing up paper towels on the rug along with thumbnails. The beta is available on all Ring cameras and doorbells in the US and Canada. Microsoft and Meta launched the Meta Quest 3? S Xbox Edition, a $399 VR headset bundle with a black and green Xbox Colorway prepared Xbox controller and Xbox cloud gaming access. The headset has no real new VR functionality or console integration, but does have an elite strap and access to game Pass with quantities said to be extremely limited. And finally today, the Verge reports that despite DJI insisting it's still committed to the US Market, its drones have mostly disappeared from retail shelves like Best Buy, Amazon and even DJI's own US store. The company is blaming a customs related misunderstanding with US Authorities likely tired to the uyghur Forest Labor Prevention act, but isn't talking specifics. With increasing tariffs, long repair wait times and DJI skipping US launches like the Mavic 4 Pro signs do point to a withdrawal ahead of a looming ban unless the company passes a national security audit.
