These are the daily tech headlines for Friday, November 22, 2024. I'm Rob Dunwood. Google may be Exiting the tablet space again Android Headlines reported that Google canceled development of the Pixel tablet 3 even before announcing the Pixel tablet 2, which was rumored to come out in 2025. A day later, Android Authority's Michelle Rahman reported that it is actually the Pixel tablet 2 which has been canceled, suggesting that Google may be giving up on its tablet aspirations for the second time. A source said the company decided to cancel plans to release the Pixel Tablet 2 over concerns that it would not be profitable. WhatsApp announced Thursday that voice message transcriptions are coming to the cross platform messaging app. Users will be able to transcribe messages to be read when they aren't in a position to listen to them. Transcripts are generated on device and can only be read by the user. To access voice message transcripts, go to the Settings Select Chat section and then tap voice message transcripts to turn the feature on. From there you can select your transcription language. Voice message transcripts are rolling out globally over the coming weeks in select languages. Apple is working on a more conversational version of Siri to better compete with chatgpt and other voice services. People familiar with the matter say that the new Siri uses more advanced large language models to allow for back and forth conversations and can handle more sophisticated requests in a quicker fashion. Dubbed LLM Siri, the new voice assistant will be added to Apple Intelligence and rely on new Apple AI models to interact more like a human and handle tasks in a way that's closer to ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. LLM Siri will be unveiled next year with a rollout planned for 2026. The AI startup Anthropic has raised an additional $4 billion from Amazon and has agreed to use Amazon Web Services to host its AI models. Anthropic also says it's working with Annapurna Labs, AWS's chipmaking division to generations of Titanium accelerators. AWS has custom built chips for training AI models. The new infusion from Amazon brings the company's total investment in anthropic to $8 billion, but Amazon's position remains that of a minority investor. ChatGPT maker OpenAI has recently considered developing a web browser that it would combine with its Chatbot and has separately discussed or struck deals to power search features for travel, food, real estate and retail websites. People familiar with the matter say that OpenAI has spoken about the search product with website and app developers such as Conde Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite and Priceline. The company has also discussed powering artificial intelligence features on devices made by Samsung, a key Google business partner. Similar to a deal OpenAI recently struck with Apple. The UK's competition and markets authority has provisionally found that Apple's policies are holding back innovation in the browsers we use to access the web on mobile phones. The CMA also highlighted a revenue sharing agreement with Google, noting that the duo earns significant revenue when Google Chrome is used on iOS, which reduces their financial incentives to compete. For now, the CMA said that it is inviting further comments on its provisional findings and expects to make a final decision by March 2025. Metasthread Social media network is making a change to its algorithm now prioritizing content from people you follow. Threads boss Adam Mosseri announced Thursday that creators should start seeing less content from accounts they don't follow and more content from accounts they do follow. The change could make the for you feed include more accounts that you care about, but we'll have to wait and see if the update addresses the problem of the feed surfacing posts that are very old and no longer timely threads is also beginning to test a couple of long overdue improvements to Search and Trending Now. In a post on Threads, Mossiri says, in the new search experience, you'll be able to search within a specific date range or search for posts from a single account. In the US Where trending now is available, we're testing an expanded set of trending topics along with AI powered summaries of what people are discussing. And finally, Android will soon instantly log you into your apps on new devices. Google has announced a new Restore Credentials feature that can seamlessly onboard users to their accounts on a new device. Until Restore Credentials, users had to authenticate in many of the apps transferred to a new device or that were restored from a backup if supported by your app's developer, who will need to implement a backup agent. No interaction should be required by users after apps have been transferred.
