Students must sign up before June 30th of 2025 using a valid edu email address. The plan includes 2 terabytes of cloud storage and access to AI tools like Gemiini Advanced and Gemiini Deep Research, designed to help students study smarter by summarizing complex topics and converting reports into podcast style audio format. Students will be reminded to cancel their subscriptions near the end of the free period. It would appear that Apple has opted out of supporting Apple Intelligence in the company's iOS apps, including Facebook, WhatsApp and Threads. As reported by Sorcererhat, tech features like writing tools for creating, changing and proofreading text and Genmoji, which creates custom AI generated emoji, are no longer accessible. Additionally, users can't add keyboard stickers or memoji to Instagram stories. Meta hasn't provided a reason, but it's likely to promote their own Meta AI, which offers similar text and image generation features. Netflix CEO Greg Peters announced during the company's first quarter results conference call that Netflix is developing a new search experience powered by AI to enhance content discovery. The interactive search feature, based on generative technologies, aims to assist users in finding different titles. Peters highlighted the importance of improving discovery and recommendation, as the most popular titles currently attract only 1% of traffic. By enhancing these aspects, Netflix aims to provide greater value to members and expand the audience reach for their titles. Apple's smartphone shipments in China experienced a 9% decline in the first quarter, making it the only major manufacturer to face a decrease. This is Apple's seventh consecutive quarter of decline, with shipments falling below 9.8 million phones and market share dropping to 13.7% from 17.4% in the previous quarter. In contrast, market leader Xiaomi saw a 40% surge in shipments reaching 13.3 million, while the overall industry experienced a 3.3% growth. IDC analyst Will Wong attracted to Apple's decline to its premium pricing structure, which prevented it from benefiting from new government subsidies that boosted growth in the first quarter. U.S. district Judge Miranda M. Dew in Nevada has ruled that Tower Dumpsthe law enforcement practice of collecting massive amounts of private personal data from cell towers are unconstitutional. Despite this ruling, the judge allowed the police to use the evidence obtained from this unconstitutional search. In this specific instance, cell towers track the location of nearby phones approximately every seven seconds. When law enforcement requested to dump, they asked the telecom company for the numbers of personal information of every phone connected to a tower during a specific time frame, potentially resulting in tens of thousands of numbers depending on the area. Amazon is reportedly transitioning its TV hardware away from Android. The company plans to release its first TV streaming device powered by its still unannounced Vega os later this year and has been courting major publishers to bring their apps to the platform. Vega, a Linux based operating system, may eventually replace Amazon's Android based Fire OS across various devices. Amazon has already launched three Vega powered devices, the Echo Show 5 and Echo Hub smart displays and the Echo Spot smart clock speaker. An Amazon spokesperson declined for comment on the matter. The Chinese e commerce marketplace apps Dhgate and Taobao have risen to the number two and five free iPhone apps in the US respectively due to new tariffs on US imports from China. This surge in popularity is attributed to TikTok videos from Chinese manufacturers revealing that many luxury goods including clothing, handbags, shoes and accessories are originally made in China and then shipped to the brand's home country like Italy or France for repackaging and labeling before being sold at higher prices. An Italian newspaper, Il Foglio, recently concluded a month long experiment where it included a four page daily insert written entirely by artificial intelligence. The trial was a success, leading to increased sales, and the paper now plans to publish a weekly AI written section. Editor Claudio Sarrazza stated that AI will also be used to WR educational articles on topics where the newspaper lacks expertise, like a recent piece on astronomy. SRASA emphasized that AI will not replace journalists at Ilfolio, but it can enhance the paper's content and efficiency. And finally, Nintendo has announced that the US and Canada pre orders for the Switch 2 will begin on April 24. The price of the console will remain $499.99, but accessories, including the Joy Con Pro controller and Switch 2 camera, will increase by $5. Pre orders were original for April 9 but were delayed to assess the potential impact of new tariffs. The Switch 2's launch date of June 5th remains unchanged.
