These are the daily tick headlines for Friday, May 15, 2026. I'm Rob Dunwood. Google is currently testing a new policy for some new accounts in select regions that limits free cloud storage to 5GB unless the user links a phone number to their account. The company confirmed the test, which was initially spotted by Reddit user SungSusungSoo, stating that the measure is intended to ensure high quality storage service and encourage account security and data recovery, as well as prevent multiple free allocations per person. Although Google has not specified the affected regions, reports suggest a change is occurring in parts of Africa and India. This move follows Google's 20192021 decision to end the unlimited storage perk for Google Photos, which now, along with Docs and Sheets, counts toward the free storage limit of 15 GB. OpenAI is reportedly considering legal action against Apple due to frustrations over ChatGPT integration that failed to meet subscriber and prominence expectations. While Apple has raised its own grievances regarding OpenAI's privacy standards and its hardware ambitions, this conflict reflects Apple's historical reputation as a difficult partner seen previously in its alienation of Google Maps, exclusion of Adobe Flash and ongoing disputes with Spotify. Despite this pattern, Apple maintains a significant commercial exception through its current multi year AI infrastructure deal with Google. Microsoft is launching the cloud initiated driver recovery feature to automatically roll back problematic Windows drivers delivered via Windows Update. Managed entirely by Microsoft, this initiative removes the need for manual fixes by users or hardware partners and aiming to close the gap where devices remain on low quality software set for a full rollout in September 2026. The feature is part of a broader driver quality Initiative unveiled at WinHEC 2026 to enhance system reliability and security across the Windows ecosystem. Meta is opening its Ray Ban Display Glasses platform to third party developers, enabling them to create mobile and web apps that use the Monocular display and Neural band controller. Company is encouraging glanceable applications like Information Overlays and M apps, addressing the previous limitation of only having MetaMade apps. Currently, Meta is releasing immediate updates for existing users which include neural handwriting for message response, display recording and live captioning for calls across Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram. Elon Musk SpaceX AI, formed after the acquisition of Xai, is experiencing a significant talent drain with over 50 researchers and engineers, including key leaders and co founders departing since February for rivals like Meta and Thinking Machines Lab. This exodus, fueled by Musk's high pressure work culture and unrealistic deadlines that reportedly compromise model quality has raised concerns about the company's future commitment to leading AI development, though some departures may also be driven by employees seeking to cash out on equity ahead of a potential ipo. Apple has established a strategic multi year partnership with Intel Foundry to produce low end legacy processors for iPhone, iPad and Mac using Intel's 18A 2P process and Foveris packaging. This collaboration a defined lifecycle starting with a small scale testing in 2026, ramping up in 2027 and 2028 and declining by 2029. For Apple, the move serves as a long term hedging strategy to reduce single source risk as TSMC's capacity increasingly shifts towards AI and HPC clients. While for intel, the deal provides a crucial Foundry training opportunity to validate, yield and rebuild advanced node capabilities through large scale production for demanding customer. OpenAI has integrated its Codex coding tool into the ChatGPT mobile app, allowing users to remotely monitor and manage development workflows, approve commands and Switch models on iOS and Android. This update allows recent enhancements like background execution in a Chrome extension, intensifying the competition with Anthropic's Claude code, which launched a similar remote control feature earlier this year. Microsoft is reversing its initial by design stance and updating the Edge web browser to prevent safe passwords from being loaded in clear text into process memory at startup. This change follows a disclosure by security researcher Tom Jordan by Cider Roning, who demonstrated that all credentials stored in Edge were decrypted on launch and remained in memory, making them susceptible to dumping by an attacker with administrative privileges. Although Microsoft initially dismissed the behavior as an expected feature, the company has prioritized this defense in depth change across all supported versions. Versions of Edge starting in the Canary channel as part of the Secure Future initiative. And finally, YouTube shorts have seen a surprising surge in popularity on televisions, with viewers consuming over 2 billion hours of these vertical clips on the big screen every month. To capitalize on this growth, YouTube has optimized the TV interface and integrated Shorts into search results in Google TV feeds, while simultaneously seeing a similar living room boom in video podcasts, which reached 700 million monthly watch hours in 2025.
