ByteDance said it will spin out Tik Tok US with new American investors potentially including Oracle, to meet US law requiring a non Chinese owner. The agreement is still tied to broader trade talks and comes after the US Administration extended the deadline four times, most recently to December. China signaled support for a commercial solution despite past opposition to a forced sale. Meta's Ray Ban display demos at Connect 2025 apparently didn't fail due to Wi Fi issues, but technical mishaps Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth said a live AI request triggered every device in the building, overwhelming Meta's dev server and essentially ddosing itself. A separate bug caused Mark Zuckerberg's WhatsApp call demo to fail when the glasses went to sleep at the exact moment a notification came through. Bosworth says the bug is fixed, but admitted the live demo was a terrible place for it to appear. The information reports that Apple is losing talent to OpenAI, which has recruited more than two dozen Apple hardware staff this year, up from 10 last year. Recruits include longtime designers of Siri and Apple Watch, lured by multimillion dollar stock grants and promises of less bureaucracy. Open Air is said to be building devices including a smart speaker, glasses, a voice recorder and a wearable pin, with launches targeted for late 2026 and early 2027. Luxshare and Gore Tech Apple suppliers are said to be tapped to support this effort. Google is integrating Gemini infused AI across its browser to enhance user experience, search capabilities and security. New features will include a desktop Gemini button for content summaries, system level integration on Android with upcoming iOS support, AI mode in the Omnibar and ask about this page functionality with AI overviews. The AI is also meant to improve security by detecting scams and automatically changing compromised passwords. Future plans include agentic control, letting Chrome complete tasks for users. Mastodon, the nonprofit behind the decentralized social platform, is launching paid hosting, moderation and support services for organizations that want to run their own servers on the Fediverse. The move diversifies revenue beyond donations and grants, offering a managed WordPress style model for groups lacking in house expertise. Clients already include the European Commission, German and French governments and and Alt Store. Pricing is custom with options for full hosting or support only contracts. Mastodon will continue operating Mastodon Social while expanding institutional partnerships. A few minutes ago we did mention that Meta demo that went awry, but we buried the lead a bit. Meta's new Ray Ban display smart glasses have been officially announced, offering a full color, high resolution display in the right lens for various functions like viewing messages, video calls and directions. They feature a 12 megapixel camera and are controlled by a wristband with up to 6 hours of battery life or 30 hours with a charging case. They come in black or Brown and cost $799. Launching on September 30th at select retailers in the US the Financial Times reports that the Cyberspace Administration of China, or CAC, was ordered top technology firms including ByteDance and Alibaba to halt testing as well as Cancel orders for Nvidia's RTX Pro 6000D chips.
