These are the daily tech headlines for Friday, April 4th, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwoody. Intel and TSMC have tentatively agreed to form a joint venture to operate Intel's chipmaking facilities, with TSMC holding a 20% stake. TSMC's contribution will be sharing chipmaking practices and training intel employees rather than capital investment. The Trump administration reportedly encouraged the discussions to support Intel's turnaround following the recent appointment of Lipp Bhutan as CEO, who is expected to implement significant changes. Intel executives are reportedly concerned about potential mass layoffs. Hackers have targeted Australia's major pension funds, comprising over 20,000 accounts and stealing savings from some members. At the largest fund. National CyberSecurity Coordinator Michelle McGinnis is organizing a government regulatory and industry response. The association of Superannuation Funds of Australia confirmed that multiple funds were impacted, including Australian Super, Australian Retirement Trust, rest insignia and host + Australia Australian super. The country's largest fund with 3.5 million users, reported that up to 600 member passwords were stolen, but they have taken action to lock the affected accounts and notify members. Microsoft's Business Focus linked mini PC, designed for seamless integration with the company's Windows 365 cloud service, is now available for purchase at $349.99 in the US and several other countries. Announced last November, the Windows 365 link offers easier IT management and reduces the need for hands on support compared to tradition computers. X is developing a system to boost revenue by selling off inactive usernames. Verified organizations, which already pay $1,000 a month for an X subscription, will be able to bid on these abandoned handles through a handle inquiry process. Bids will start at $10,000 and can go as high as $500,000. Reverse engineer Nima Ouchi discovered the changes in X's web application, but the website for organizations to acquire handles is not yet publicly available. Amazon is testing a new AI powered feature called Buy From Me that allows users to purchase items directly from brand websites through the Amazon app. When searching for a product, users may see a Shop brand sites Directly section and clicking Buy from Me on an item will take them to a product detail page within the app. Amazon will then use AgentIC AI to handle the checkout process on the brand's website using encrypted customer details. Order tracking will be available within the Amazon app and customers will receive confirmation emails from the brand stores. A hacker breached Europe Car Mobility Group's GitLab repositories and stole source code for Android and iOS applications, along with personal information for up to 200,000 customers. The hacker attempted to extort the company by threatening to publish 37 GB of stolen data, including backups and details about Europe Car's cloud infrastructure and internal applications. Europe Car Mobility Group, a subsidiary of Green Mobility holding, operates the Europcar, Gold, Car and Ubiquo brands and has a large customer base across 140 countries. Video technology platform Vimeo is launching a new product called Vimeo Streaming, aimed at providing video creators with a turnkey solution to launch their own subscription streaming services. This service will allow creators to quickly launch their service and apps without coding experience, and it will include features such as tiered membership options, custom video bumpers, piracy protection, advanced data analytics and AI powered translations. Vimeo CEO Philip Moyer believes that this service will give creators more control over their work and revenue by providing them with technologies that are usually only available to the biggest platforms at a fraction of the cost. Honda is collaborating with Sierra Space and tech Masters to test its high differential pressure water electrolysis system on the International Space Station as part of its plan to use regenerative fuel cell technology to support life in space. This technology continuously produces hydrogen, oxygen and electricity. Honda's investment in hydrogen is a risky move as hydrogen powered cars have faced challenges such as fueling and pricing. However, Honda believes hydrogen is the key to decarbonizing its vehicle fleet 2040 and is now looking to leverage hydrogen to power its expansion into space exploration. And finally, Nintendo has delayed pre orders for the Switch 2 in the US due to concerns about a potential impact of newly announced tariffs and evolving market conditions. The pre orders were originally set to begin on April 9, but Nintendo has not provided a new date, stating that they will update timing at a later date. Despite the delay in pre orders, the launch date for the Switch 2 remains unchanged and is still scheduled for June 5th.
