These are the Daily Tech Headlines for Monday, March 10, 2025. I'm Sarah Lane Reuter. Sources say the U.S. administration is in talks with four groups about a potential sale of TikTok. President Trump said there were ongoing discussions but didn't provide specifics. Potential buyers include a bid led by billionaire Frank McCourt, Microsoft, Oracle, Perplexity AI and former Activision CEO Bobby Kotick. The future of the Bytedance owned platform is still up in the air after Trump extended the TikTok ban deadline by 75 days back in January. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports in his Power on newsletter that Apple has delayed its rumored smart display after postponing its major Siri AI upgrade. The device with Apple intelligence and support for apps like Calendar, Notes and Messages would rely on upgraded Siri capabilities. Apple now says the AI upgrade will take longer than expected, possibly missing the iOS 18 release. Developer Simon Willison suggests that Apple is struggling to secure Siri's ability to access user data and perform actions if exploited, attackers could trick Siri into leaking personal information. Apple's strong privacy stance makes this a obviously critical issue, and some experts worry the problem may be unsolvable with current AI models. Manus, the world's first fully autonomous AI agent, is capable of making independent decisions without human oversight. Unlike something like ChatGPT or Gemini, which rely on prompts, Manus can initiate tasks, analyze data and execute actions on its own. So for example, it could screen job candidates, find real estate and complete complex workflows without user input. This positions the Chinese engineered agent ahead in AI autonomy, but also presents ethical and regulatory challenges as its self directed nature, questions and accountability in AI decision making. In other AI news, Foxcom has its own the electronics maker launched its own large language model to improve manufacturing and supply chain management. The model is called Fox Brain and is meant to help with reasoning, data analysis, mathematics and code generation, and was trained in four weeks using 120 Nvidia H100 GPUs. Foxconn plans to open source Fox Brain to collaborate with industry partners and says the model is based on Meta's Llama 3.1. With performance approaching world leading standards, Meta's thread is testing a feature that lets users add interest to their profiles, helping them find and join relevant discussions. This aims to improve discovery and engagement, especially for newcomers. The feature is currently mobile only, but complements threads, custom feeds and brings it a bit closer to what bluesky offers. Meta confirmed the test and said it plans to share more details soon. Microsoft has lifted a compatibility hold that previously blocked some AutoCAD 2022 users from installing Windows 112024 update due to launch and crash issues. Autodesk resolved the issue with the AutoCAD 2022 1.4 update and and affected users can now install Windows 11 version 24H2. Microsoft also removed other upgrade blocks relating to BIOS issues, Auto HDR gaming problems and incompatible software. Bloomberg reports that Japan's service robot market is expected to nearly triple by 2030, reaching 40 billion yen, or US$2.7 billion. Driven by labor shortages and an aging population, the country is projected to face a labor shortfall of 11 million by 2040, with 40% of its population over 65 by 2065. Companies like Restaurant chain Skylark are already using thousands of robots to assist workers. And finally, a Consumer Report study found that most popular voice cloning tools lack strong safeguards against misuse. Of the six companies tested, the that were Descript 11 Labs, Lovo, Play, HT, Resemble AI and Speechify only Descript and Resemble AI took steps to prevent unauthorized voice cloning. Other tools relied on users themselves, saying that they had permission.
