These are the Daily Tech Headlines for Thursday, August 21, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. Yesterday we learned that Meta reorganized its superintelligence labs, splitting into four smaller groups focused on research, infrastructure, products and superintelligence. Today we learned that a hiring freeze has also been implemented just two months after scooping up 50 plus AI researchers and engineers, and prohibits current employees moving across teams inside the division. Meta's Chief's AI officer Alexander Wang must grant permission for any exceptions to the external hiring freeze. A Meta spokesperson described the hiring freeze as basic organizational planning. This decision aims to establish a robust framework for new superintelligence initiatives following recent hires and annual budgeting and planning cycles. Masimo, a medical tech company, is suing U.S. customs and Border Protection after Apple redesigned its blood oxygen monitoring for the Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2. This follows a temporary temporary sales ban from Massimo's 2021 patent infringement lawsuit. Apple initially bypassed a ban, removing the Blood Oxygen app, but later introduced a new feature calculating data on iPhones. Massimo argues that customs exceeded its authority by allowing the update without a proper hearing, seeking to block the decision and only permit imports if the Blood Oxygen tracking is disabled, citing unfair competitive impact. A study on agentic AI browsers like Perplexity's Comet, Microsoft Edge's Copilot and OpenAI's Ara Reveale significant security flaws. These AI tools, designed to autonomously manage online tasks, are vulnerable to cyber attacks such as phishing, prompt injection and fraudulent purchases. Tests showed AI agents could be manipulated into making fake purchases, clicking malicious links and downloading harmful files by misrepresenting hidden instructions. This highlights the urgent need for stronger security measures before these AI browsers are widely used for sensitive online activities. Google is significantly expanding its experimental AI mode feature in search, making it available in English to 180 new countries and introducing new agentic and personalized capabilities. Users can now use AI mode to find restaurant reservations, with future plans to include local service appointments and event tickets. This reservation feature, along with personalized search results tailored to individual preferences and interests, is rolling out to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the US through Google Labs. Additionally, AI mode now allows users to share and collaborate on responses, enabling them to easily send conversations to others for joint planning or discussion. Chinese AI startup Deepsea has upgraded its V3 model, now featuring optimization for Chinese made chips and improved processing speeds. This focus on domestic chip compatibility suggests Deepsea's AI models are being aligned with China's developing semiconductor industry as Beijing aims to replace US technology amidst Washington's export restrictions. Android 16 beta features, including enhanced dark mode and themed app icons are rolling out with the Pixel 10 series and are expected to be publicly released in December. The beta introduces an intelligently invert dark theme for unsupported apps, themed icon colors for non compliant apps, and a new parental controls option. Improvements for data migration, PDF editing and Bluetooth LE audio sharing are also included. QPR2 beta 1 is available for Pixel users in the Android Beta program with general release later this year. Starting September 1, the Russian government will mandate the pre installation of MAX, a state backed messenger application on all mobile phones and tablets sold in Russia, citing its integration with government services and asserting its security despite critics claims of it being a spying tool. This move, which also includes the mandatory pre installation of Russia's domestic app store Roostore on Apple devices, comes as Moscow seeks increased control over the Internet space. Amidst its standoff with the west over Ukraine, Anthropic has announced a new subscription offering that incorporates Claude code into Claude for Enterprise, making their command line coding tool available as part of a broader enterprise suite with more sophisticated integrations and powerful admin tools. Previously, Claude code was only accessible through individual accounts. This integration positions Anthropic to better compete with enterprise integrated command line tools from Google and GitHub. And finally, Google is replacing Google Assistant with Gemini for Home on Smart Home Devices, launching Early Access in October for smart displays and speakers. It will offer free and paid versions, expanding Google subscription business. Gemini for home demo at CES 2025 offers natural conversations and multimodal features integrating with Nest devices. Early Access guarantees improvements in Gemini Live access, but pricing and subscription features are undisclosed, though Nest Aware subscribers may get early access. More details, possibly with the new Nest hardware, are expected soon.
