This move marks a significant reversal, especially considering Meta's reaction to an earlier report detailing how students combine Ray Ban Meta glasses with publicly available facial recognition software called Ixray to identify individuals and retrieve their personal information. The iXray tool captured faces, used PIM eyes for identification, and then aggregated data like home addresses and phone numbers from the Web. Apple is reportedly developing new chips, some inspired by the Apple Watch's low power design to power Smart Glass is similar to Meta's Ray Ban Meta, as well as enhanced Macs and AI servers with mass production by TSMC targeted for late 2026 or 2027. This development underscores Apple CEO Tim Cook's ambition to surpass Meta in the smart glasses market, where Meta has sold approximately 2 million Ray Ban metas since 2023. Apple is also exploring non AR glasses that utilize cameras and AI for use, requiring processors capable of managing these features efficiently without significant battery drain. Microsoft has banned its employees from using the Deepseek app due to concerns about data security and potential Chinese propaganda, as stated by Microsoft Vice Chairman Brad Smith during a Senate hearing. The ban extends to not offering Deepseek at Microsoft's App Store due to the risk of user data being stored on Chinese servers subject to Chinese law and potential to government influence, as well as the possibility of censored or propagandist content. Despite these concerns, Microsoft does offer DeepSeek's R1 model and its Azure Cloud service, a move they differentiate from offering the Chatbot app directly, though they claim to have modified the model to remove harmful elements after rigorous safety evaluations. Meta is launching an account status feature on threads similar to those on Instagram and Facebook to provide users with greater transparency about account penalties for violating platform rules. Located in the Account section of Threads Settings, this feature will display instances where Meta has removed or demoted, post or applied other penalties, such as reduced visibility. Users will be able to submit appeals directly through the account status, with notifications provided upon review. This update seeks to clarify Thread's recommendation algorithm, particularly after recent adjustments concerning political content. VMware's controversial strategy intends to compel users to purchase subscription based product bundles, leading to cost increases of 300% or higher in certain instances. Spanish technology company GMV has developed Lupin, a GPS like navigation system for the moon, aiming to simplify lunar missions akin to using navigation apps on Earth. This project, part of the European Space Agency program, is testing positioning, navigation and timing techniques for renewed lunar exploration interests. According to Project Director Stephen Kay, Lupin could bring Europe closer to establishing a human presence on the moon and potentially aid in Mars exploration. The technology, which uses signals from moon orbiting satellites to allow real time location pinpointing for rovers and astronauts, underwent field trials at a location resembling the lunar service in Spain. Huawei has launched its first laptop utilizing its proprietary Harmony os, prompted by the expiration of its Microsoft Windows license in March. This unnamed laptop is equipped with AI capabilities, runs Harmony OS 5, also known as Harmony OS Next, and includes Huawei's AI assistant Celia, which can perform tasks like slide creation, meeting summarization, and local file information retrieval. This marks a shift for Huawei, as most of its current laptops run Windows, with some offering Linux as an alternative. A Florida bill that would have mandated social media companies to create an encryption backdoor for police access to user accounts and private messages has failed to become law after being indefinitely postponed and withdrawn from consideration in the Florida House of Representatives. Despite the Senate's approval, the social media use by minors bill did not pass both legislative chambers, effectively halting its progress. The proposed law would have compelled social media firms to provide decryption mechanisms for end to end encryption upon law enforcement subpoena. And finally, Google is implementing new AI powered defenses in Chrome to combat online scams, utilizing its on device large language model Gemini Nano on desktop for enhanced protection against risky websites and launching AI powered powered warnings on Chrome for Android to identify spammy notifications. This builds upon Chrome's existing enhanced protection mode and Google's ongoing use of AI in search, which has already led to significant reduction in scammy results such as those impersonating airline customer service agents. The aim is to provide users with immediate insights into potential scams and adapt quickly to evolving malicious tactics, with plans to expand these defenses to Android and other scam types in the future.
