These are the Daily Tech Headlines for Tuesday, May 13, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. Microsoft has revealed its decision to end support for Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 after the original October 14 cutoff. Now pledging to provide security updates for an additional three years until October 10, 2028 this extension, quietly announced in late April and reiterated in an updated support article, aims to help users transition to Windows 11 while maintaining security, though Microsoft still encourages upgrading to avoid potential performance and reliability issues. The revised stance contrasts with the company's earlier warnings in January that Office apps would no longer be supported on Windows 10, reflecting their ongoing efforts to push users towards Windows 11, including offering paid extended security updates for those who choose not to upgrade or buy a new P. Samsung introduced the Galaxy S25 Edge on Monday, a thinner smartphone signaling a trend toward slimmer devices this year. Launching in the US on May 30 for $1,099, the 5.8mm thick and 163 gram phone is about 30% thinner and 25% lighter than Samsung's top tier S25 Ultra. While similar in weight to the base S25, the S25 Edge boasts premium features such as a titanium frame, a 200 megapixel rear camera and advanced AI. Apple is introducing a new Accessibility Reader mode later this year. Designed to improve text readability for users with disabilities like dyslexia or low vision. This feature will enable customization of font color and spacing within any app across iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro devices, and will also offer a text to speech function. Notably, Accessibility Reader will be integrated into the Magnifier app, allowing users to magnify the appearance of text on physical objects by using their device's camera. Expanding on accessibility features, Apple is also bringing magnifier to macOS, enabling text modification using the Mac's camera or connected devices, and is rolling out Accessibility Nutrition labels on the App Store to highlight accessibility features in apps and games. Alongside a new Braille note taking method, Google has launched the AI Futures Fund to invest in AI startups using Google DeepMind's tools, offering support like early model access, expert collaboration and cloud credits, with potential direct investment on a rolling basis without a fixed application application window. The fund has already supported startups like Viggle and Tunsutra and applications opened on May 12. Building on Google's recent AI support initiatives, including funding from google.org and the global AI Opportunity Fund as well as the Google for Startups Founders Funds, which will begin investing in US based AI startups this year. BYD's Brazilian factory is now expected to be fully operational by December 2026 after a labor abuse investigation, delaying full production but still aiming for 10,000 jobs. Semifinish kit production will start by the end of 2025. The project includes a significant investment in a former ford plant with 150,000 vehicle annual capacity and lithium mining rights. Initial vehicle assembly will hire around 1,000 workers, with an estimated total of 20,000 direct and indirect jobs as the factory progresses, Apple is reportedly exploring technology that would enable iPhone control via neural signals, collaborating with Synchron, a company developing implantable brain computer interfaces similar to Neural Synchron. Stentrode device, implanted in 10 individuals since 2019, reads brain signals and could potentially provide device access for individuals with limited limb control due to paralysis or conditions like als. This development follows Neuralink's recent global opening of its patient registry for its blindsight implant, with human trials potentially starting in late 2025 and plans for 2030 patients to receive upgraded implants this year. Apple has not yet commented on the report. Coinbase will join the S&P 500 on Monday, May 19, replacing Discover Financial Services, which led to an 8% jump in the crypto exchange's shares. This inclusion reflects Coinbase's growing significance in the US financial system since its 2021 public listing, coinciding with a surge in Bitcoin's value and the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs. Despite its volatile stock history and recent decline in net income to $65.6 million, Coinbase meets the S&P 500's profitability requirements. The company also is expand presence with planned $2.9 billion acquisition of Dubai based crypto derivatives exchange Deribit. Perplexity AI is in late stage talks to raise $500 million in funding, which could value the AI search engine company at $14 billion, led by Excel. This is less than the $500 million to $1 billion at an $18 billion valuation. Previously considered, Perplexity's valuation has grown from $3 billion in June 2024 to $9 billion in December amid increasing competition from Anthropic OpenAI and Google. Perplexity is also developing its AI agent web browser Comet and finally Spotify Premium. Users can now control the AI DJ feature with English voice commands, allowing them to personalize the music selection by specifying genres, artists or moods accessed by pressing and holding the DJ button and speaking after a beep. This update provides a more direct way to influence the AI selections compared to the previous random song switching. Although switch commands are currently the only method for user control, which may be inconvenient in some situations.
