These are the daily tech headlines for Tuesday, November 11, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. Microsoft has changed its AI strategy to compete more aggressively in the race for artificial general intelligence by becoming self suffic in AI. This shift is marked by the creation of a new superintelligence team led by AI CEO Mustafa Suleiman, which will focus on in house frontier grade research and training models with Microsoft's own resources. This new direction moves the company away from its previous heavy reliance on its partner OpenAI and places it in more direct competition with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta. Apple has reportedly scaled back production of the current super thin iPhone Air and delayed the launch of its second generation from fall to spring 2027 at the earliest due to disappointing sales. Second generation iPhone Air will reportedly prioritize adding a second rear ultra wide camera lens to address a major complaint instead of the rumored lighter design, larger battery and advanced cooling system. The European Commission is set to classify WhatsApp as a very large online platform under the Digital Services act because it exceeds 45 million monthly active EU users. This designation will subject WhatsApp's public facing channels feature significantly stricter content moderation and transparency rules. The platform will be required to implement stronger measures against illegal content and disinformation and to increase transparency regarding its algorithms and content practices, aligning safety standards with those of major social media platforms. Google plans to invest approximately 5 billion euros to expand its infrastructure and data center capacity in Germany, Europe's largest economy, including a new data center near Frankfurt and an expansion of a site in Hanau. The US Tech company has already stated its intention to invest billions in Germany to address future issues through innovation, artificial intelligence and climate neutral transformation, with a press conference scheduled for Tuesday at 4:30pm GMT, where German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil is expected to speak. Microsoft plans a $10 billion investment in AI infrastructure at a data center in Science Portugal, making it one of Europe's largest AI projects. The initiative is in partnership with Start Campus, Nscale and Nvidia will dep 12,600 Nvidia GPUs building on Stark Campus existing 8.5 billion euro data center plan. Microsoft President Brad Smith highlighted the project's aim to strengthen Portugal's national AI infrastructure and set a benchmark for responsible AI in Europe, capitalizing on Science's strategic location and Portugal's focus on green energy for data centers. Reflecting on the global surge in AI computing investment, a report by Good Jobs first criticizes the lack of transparency surrounding the hundreds of billions of dollars in state level subsidies given to the US data center industry. While 36 states offer subsidies, mainly tax exemptions, only 11 disclose the recipient company names and only five of those reveal the subsidy amounts. Crucially, no state confirms the actual amount of jobs created versus those promised, making it impossible to assess if the high public cost, estimated at over $1 million per permanent job, is justifiable. Sachin Katie, Intel's chief technology and AI officer, is leaving the company after only six months in the role to join OpenAI. Katie's move was announced on X, where OpenAI president Greg Brockman welcomed him. Katie expressed his excitement about working on building out the compute infrastructure for AGI with Brockman, CEO Sam Altman and others. He also thanked intel for four years leading networking, edge computing and AI, and for the opportunity to work with leaders like Lip Bhutan and Pat Gesslinger Snapchat is introducing a new setting for Snapchat plus subscribers called Comic Bitmoji, which allows users to revert to older, classic 2D Bitmoji avatars. This change comes after high demand, including a petition signed by many users and the CEO for the return of the 2D look, which was replaced by 3D avatars in 2023. Although the new 2D style is essentially a filter, applied to the 3D infrastructure is expected to be a major incentive for users to subscribe to the paid Snapchat service. Venmo has introduced a new Rewards program, Venmo Stas, which gives users of Venmo Debit MasterCard up to 5% cash back. The program is designed to keep funds within the Venmo ecosystem and appeal to younger users who prefer debit cards. Rewards are tiered based on user engagement, such as auto reloads and direct deposits, and are earned by selecting curated bundles of favorite brands instead of traditional spending categories. Venmo also plans to expand the rewards to include merchant payments in the future. And finally, Google is rolling out an update to Google TV Streamer, replacing Google Assistant with Gemini. This integration allows users 18 and older to interact with their TV more naturally, using voice commands for content recommendations, plot summaries and general knowledge questions. Users can access Gemini by pressing the remote's microphone button, aligning with Google's broader strategy to integrate Gemini across all devices. Data is expected to roll out over the next few weeks.
