Microsoft is discontinuing support for Windows 11 SE in October, five years after its launch as a competitor to Google Chromebooks in the education market. This operating system, designed for low cost laptops, was only available to schools and encouraged the use of progressive web apps over traditional Win32 applications with strict controls on allowed apps. Despite previous attempts to compete with Chrome OS, such as Windows 10's S mode, Microsoft's efforts have faced challenges and this decision to end Windows 11 SE support aligns with recent declines in CHR Chromebook market share and a focus on Windows 11 upgrades. On a recent earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed the company's plan to significantly increase its investment in artificial intelligence. He stated that Apple is open to mergers and acquisitions of any size and could accelerate its AI roadmap, noting that the seven companies acquired this year have been small, while Apple's largest acquisition to date was Beats Electronics in 2014 for $3 billion. Cook's remarks come amidst pressure from Wall street for Apple to catch up to other tech g in AI infrastructure spending. Reddit seeks to become a leading search engine using its extensive user generated content and AI powered QA product Reddit answers, which boasts 6 million users. CEO Steve Huffman noted 70 million weekly search users. The company plans to expand Reddit Answers globally, integrate it with search and redesign its app with a prominent search bar. This initiative follows a strong second quarter with revenue up 78% to $500 million, partly due to new ad tools. Google DeepMind is launching Gemini 2.5 DeepThink, its most advanced AI reasoning model, which can answer questions by simultaneously exploring multiple ideas and using those outputs to select the best answer. This multi agent model, first unveiled at Google I O, is now available to subscribers of Google's $250 per month Ultra subscription and the Gemini app. Unlike single agent systems, Gemini 2.5 DeepThink generates multiple AI agents to address a question in parallel, a process that requires consider more computational resources but generally yield superior results. Nvidia addressed concerns from China's Cyberspace Administration regarding potential backdoors in its H20 artificial intelligence chip, stating that its products lack any such features allowing remote access or control. The CAC had summoned Nvidia for a meeting on Thursday to inquire about security risks, fearing impacts on Chinese user data and privacy, especially after a U.S. proposal for advanced chips sold abroad to include tracking functions. Nvidia emphasized that cybersecurity is critical to them and confirmed no backdoors exist in their chips. The White House administration has reportedly eliminated the IRS Direct file program, which allowed free direct tax filing. IRS Commissioner Billy Long confirmed its removal as part of the Big Beautiful Bill, which will establish a task force to find a replacement. The program, announced in 2023 and tested last year, had been at risk due to potential federal budget cuts. Critics view this as a benefit to tax preparation companies. An IRS spokesperson stated they are awaiting a Treasury report on the program and potential public private collaborations. OpenAI recently removed a ChatGPT feature that allowed public conversations to be discoverable by search engines, an experiment they deemed introduced too many opportunities for accidental sharing. Previously, users could find shared ChatGPT's conversations by filtering search results, sometimes revealing personal information despite the user having to explicitly opt in to make the Link Discoverable. While ChatGPT stated that these chats were part of an experiment in users control sharing, search engines clarify they index what's made public, not control it. The situation parallels how Google indexes publicly shared Google Drive links. Epic Games has secured another victory against Google with the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upholding a 2023 jury verdict that found Google's App Store and payment system to be illegal monopolies. This decision, which appears to be moving forward with a previously paused permanent injunction, aims to open up Android to dismantle these monopolies. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney celebrated the total victory. Social Media following this appeals court win, Tim Sweeney also announced that the Epic Games store for Android will be coming to the Google Play Store. While Google plans to appeal this decision to the Supreme Court, this development would significantly simplify access to Fortnite and other Epic distributed games for Android users, eliminating the need for sideloading or pre installation deals with phone manufacturers.
