These are the Daily Tech Headlines for Thursday, June 19th, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwoody. Microsoft is reportedly preparing for another round of job cuts, potentially impacting thousands of employees in sales as it shifts focus and resources towards artificial intelligence. These planned reductions, expected to be announced early next month after the close of the company's fiscal year, follow a previous layoff of approximately 6,000 employees in May. The tech giant is accelerating its AI investments to maintain its competitive edge as businesses across various sectors increasingly integrate AI into their offerings. Facebook is rolling out passkey support to its mobile app, making logons more secure through fingerprint, face scan or pin. These passkeys offer superior protection against theft, guessing, leaks and phishing compared to traditional passwords, as they only function with the legitimate domain. The feature will be available ON Android and iOS soon and will eventually extend to messenger, allowing users to leverage their established Facebook passkey. Texas Instruments revealed a plan to invest over $60 billion in U.S. chip production. This initiative, described as the largest investment in foundational semiconductor manufacturing in US History, will involve seven facilities across Texas and Utah and is expected to create 60,000 jobs. Construction has already commenced on two facilities at its Sherman, Texas megasite, though a complete timeline for the full investment was not disclosed. A SpaceX Starship launch vehicle exploded on the test stand in Texas while preparing for its 10th test flight. SpaceX confirmed all personnel were safe and there were no hazards to surrounding communities, though they did not explain the explosion. The incident's impact on Starship's development is unclear, especially with the FAA suggesting the next test flight could have occurred as early as June 29. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk downplayed the explosion, calling it just a scratch. End quote. OpenAI is expanding the availability of its new record mode in ChatGPT now, rolling it out to Pro, Enterprise and Edu users following its initial release for ChatGPT team users earlier this month. Exclusively available on the macOS desktop app, this feature allows paid users to easily capture and automatically transcribe and summarize voice notes, brainstorming sessions and meetings. Additionally, ChatGPT can transform these transcripts into follow up actions, code and other formats, with all recorded transcripts saved in the user's chat history. Amazon plans to invest over 20 billion rupees, or $233 million in India in 2025 to expand and upgrade its operations infrastructure, develop new fulfillment technology and enhance delivery safety. The investment built upon previous efforts to create an operations network capable of delivering to all serviceable PIN codes in the country. With the new funds aimed at launching new sites and upgrading existing facilities to improve speed and processing Capac Its fulfillment and delivery network Midjourney has launched its much awaited AI video generation model V1 on Wednesday. V1 operates as an image to video model, enabling users to upload an image, either their own or one created by Midjourney's existing models to generate a collection of 4 or 5 second videos. Upon its release. V1 is solely available on the web and accessible via Discord, mirroring the availability of Midjourney's image models. At a recent awards ceremony in Belgium, Apple's senior Vice President of Hardware technologies, Johnny Shrowje, indicated the company's interest in leveraging Generative Artificial intelligence. Shrowji, who is receiving an award from immec, an independent semiconductor research and development group, stated that Apple aims to use this technology to accelerate the design of its custom chips. Google Switch From Samsung to TSMC for the tensor G5 chip in the Pixel 10 series has reportedly shocked Samsung and triggered an internal review view. This move, driven by Samsung's struggles with semiconductor design and low 3 nanometer yield, estimated at 50% versus TSMC's 90%, marks a significant wake up call for Samsung's foundry business. The Pixel 10 will still use a Samsung modem and finally, OpenAI is testing ChatGPT direct integration with Gmail and Google Calendar, allowing users to summarize emails, create responses, transform emails into narratives, and schedule events directly within the AI. This expanded functionality, initially spotted by Tyber on X, builds upon the existing Gmail integration, which was previously limited to deep research reports, and aims to enhance user organization and productivity.
