These are the daily tick headlines for Tuesday, February 25, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. Microsoft is testing a free ad supported version of Office for Windows in India. This version includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other Office apps and it displays banner ads and 15 second video ads. Users of the free version are required to store documents in OneDrive as support for local file storage has been disabled. Although Microsoft state that there are no plans to launch this version. Broadly, the company has engineered its Office apps to work with ads on Windows, suggesting that a wider release may be possible in the future. Google has announced a free consumer version of its AI code completion and assistance tool called Gemini Code Assist for Individuals. Additionally, the company introduced Gemini code assist for GitHub, a code review tool that automatically identifies bugs and provides suggestions within GitHub code assist for Individuals allows developers to interact with a Google AI model using natural language through a chat window, enabling the fit, fix bugs, complete code sections and clarify confusing parts of their code base. Adobe has launched a new Photoshop app for iPhones, with an Android version coming later this year. The app has been designed specifically for mobile with an intuitive interface and core Photoshop features, including Selections, Layers, Mask and tools like Tap select and Spot Healing Brush. It also includes AI powered features like Generative Fill and Generative Expand, as well as access to free Adobe stock assets and integration with other Adobe apps. While the app is free, a Premium subscription for $8 a month unlocks additional features on mobile, iPad and Web. Although existing Photoshop subscribers automatically get these premium features, at least nine states, including Utah and South Carolina, have recently proposed bills requiring App store operators to verify users ages and obtain parental consent before allowing minors to download apps. In response, over 60 child safety advocates have formed a new coalition to promote the nationwide adoption of App Store age verification laws. Apple doesn't believe the respons responsibility for verifying user agents should fall on App Store operators. The iPhone maker actively opposed a similar bill in Louisiana last year, while Meta, along with Snap and X, recently argued in a letter to South Dakota legislators that the App Store verification would be the simplest solution as app stores already collect user information. Apple and Indonesia have reached an agreement to lift the ban on the selling of the iPhone 16 in the country, concluding a five month standoff. The deal includes a commitment from Apple to invest $1 billion in Indonesia with a focus on local research and development. Indonesia's Ministry of Industry will sign a memorandum of agreement with Apple this week enabling permits for the iPhone 16 sale. A press briefing is also scheduled to announce this development. The ban was enacted in October 2024 due to Apple's failure to meet Indonesia's domestic manufacturing regulations for smartphones and tablets. Educational tech company Chegg has filed a federal lawsuit against Google alleging that its AI overviews, which have appeared above search results, have harmed Check's traffic and revenue shed claims that to remain visible in Google search results, it is effectively forced to provide content that Google republishes without permission in AI generated answers violating U S Antitrust laws by unfairly competing for user attention Unlike previous lawsuits from publishers like the New York Times, which focus on copyright infringement related to AI training on protected material, SH case centers on accusations that Google is abusing its monopoly power by compelling companies to supply content for its AI overviews with the risk of exclusion from search results if they refuse. Perplexity, an AI powered search engine, has announced its upcoming web browser comment. While the release date and design remain under wraps, the company has initiated a signup list for interested users. The move positions perplexity to compete against established browsers like Google Chrome and emerging AI centric options. The company intends to leverage its existing search engine user base to gain track for comment. In the competitive browser market, right to repair legislation has now been introduced in all 50 states, marking a significant milestone for the grassroots political movement. Even though not all bills have been passed, Wisconsin became the final state to introduce such a bill on Thursday. So far, the right to repair laws have been enacted in Massachusetts, New York, Minnesota, Colorado, California and Oregon, while 20 other states are formally considering similar bills in the current legislative session. In many states, however, the legislative process has proven lengthy, with several years often required to advance a right to Repair bill to passage. And finally, after years of speculation from the Call of Duty community, Activision has officially confirmed that AI generated content has been used in the development of the FPS franchise. This disclosure appeared on the Black Ops 16 page, where Activision acknowledged in a statement that its team uses generative AI tools to help create certain in game assets. The extent, however, of AI's involvement remains unclear, with no specifics on which assets are affected, potentially ranging from background foliage and campaign missions and weapon in multiplayer and warzone.
