These are the daily Tech Headlines for Tuesday, May 6, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. Microsoft is updating Windows 11 with a redesigned Start menu that offers more space and organized access to all apps alongside a new phone companion panel for sync devices. Additionally, a host of new AI features are being integrated, including an AI Agent in Settings, enhanced text and image actions, AI powered editing tools for core apps like Paint and Photo Photos, Copilot Vision, improved search and AI functionalities within Notepad and File Explorer. These features will first be available to Windows Insiders on Snapdragon 10 copilot plus PCs with rider availability on intel and AMD based copilot plus PCs to follow. OpenAI has decided to halt its transition from a nonprofit to a for profit structure, following discussions with the Attorneys General of Delaware and California who oversee its nonprofit status and could have opposed the move, which had already drawn public criticism. Instead, OpenAI's nonprofit board will continue to govern its commercial arm, which is being restructured from a capped for profit entity to a public benefit corporation or pbc, similar to Anthropic and xai. This change will allow investors and employees to hold regular stock without a limit on potential gains, aiming to facilitate future fundraising as billions raised recently were dependent on lifting the previous cap on investor returns. The nonprofit will receive an equity stake in the PPC, and while it will appoint the PBC's board, it will retain ultimate control with no current plans for CEO Sam Altman to acquire equity in the company. YouTube is piloting a two person YouTube Premium subscription in India, France, Taiwan and Hong Kong. This new plan aims to offer more flexibility and value by allowing users to share a subscription at a lower cost than the two individual plans. Screenshots from Money Control and Android Authority show an Indian pricing scheme with the two person plan priced at Rs 219. Monthly sitting between the individual plan at 140 rupees and the family plan at test follows the recent broader launch of YouTube Premium Lite, a cheaper option offering ad free viewing but lacking features like ad free music videos, offline downloads and background play, which was also initially tested in select regions. Google inadvertently revealed its upcoming Android redesign, Material 3 expressive, through a now deleted blog post described as its most research update. The goal is to enhance the interface's appeal and usability. The Design, developed after 46 research rounds with over 18,000 participants participants, utilizes color, shape, size and motion to improve usability and will be detailed at Google I O. Research indicated that Material 3 expressive enables users to locate key interface elements up to four times faster than current Material 3 and reportedly helps older users navigate the interface as quickly as younger users. Recent reports also suggest broader UI changes across Android, including status bar icons, a clock font, and the QuickTime settings menu alongside updates to the Google Clock app. Though the Official announcement of Material 3 expressive is still pending, Spotify has introduced a new Plays metric for podcasts, allowing users and creators to see the popularity of individual episodes based on the number of times they have been actively listened to or watched. The feature, now visible throughout the Spotify app and on Spotify for Creators and Megaphone, aims to help users discover popular episodes and enable creators to understand audience preferences and compare their performance. While YouTube remains the leading platform for podcasts, this development signifies Spotify's continued efforts to strengthen its position in the podcasting market. Samsung's Wallet's upcoming Tap to Transfer feature will enable peer to peer money transfers using debit cards stored in the app, eliminating the need for separate accounts and working across different mobile wallets or physical NFC enabled cards. Powered by Visa and MasterCard and utilizing NFC technology, the feature allows users to send money by tapping their phones together or remotely via phone number. For other Samsung Wallet users, even recipients without digital wallets can receive funds through their physical Tap to pay debit cards. Though the feature will initially be exclusive to the United states with participating U.S. banks and contactless Visa or MasterCard debit cards, tap to Transfer will be available in Samsung Wallet later this month. Microsoft has announced a new, more compact 13 inch Surface Laptop priced at $899. Similar in design to the larger Surface Laptop. 7 this ARM powered device features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 10. 8 core processor, 16 gigabytes of RAM, and 256 gigabytes of storage with a $999 model offering 512g. While not drastically different from its larger counterparts, the smaller size of the new Surface Laptop is positioned as a more appealing option, offering an estimated 16 hours of battery life during active web browsing. And finally, Amazon has updated its Kindle iOS app to include a Get Book button, allowing users to purchase ebooks directly within the app. This change follows Apple's recent App Store rule modifications resulting from the Epic Games lawsuit, which now permits developers to direct users to alternative payment options. Previously, due to Apple's commission policies, the Kind app lacked the ability to buy books, requiring users to make purchases through a web browser. While Apple is appealing the ruling, Amazon has implemented this update to improve user convenience, enabling book purchases on iPhones directly within the app, although the potential for the update to be revised remains.
