These are the daily tech headlines for Monday, April 7, 2025. I'm Sarah Lane. Nintendo is re evaluating its Switch to pre order plans in the US after the US President announced new tariffs on imports from China, Vietnam and Cambodia, countries where many console parts are made. Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser tells Wired that the company didn't factor in possible tariffs from the US when deciding on the $450 pricing for its Nintendo Switch to console tech stocks in general were very volatile on Monday. The market briefly rallied on rumors of a tariff delay from an X account that the White House said was false information. A UK court has ruled that parts of a secret surveillance case against Apple must be made public, rejecting a claim that disclosure would harm national security. The case involves a UK demand for Apple to provide a backdoor to encrypted icloud data globally. Apple has since pulled its Advanced Data Protection feature from the UK and maintains it has never created a backdoor and it never will. The Times of India sources say that Apple is stockpiling iPhones in the US to avoid price hikes due to tariffs set for April 9. The company reportedly flew in five plane loads of iPhones and other products from India and China over several days at the end of March. The information sources say that OpenAI is considering acquiring IO products. That's the startup founded by former Apple design chief Jony I've and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The startup is working on AI powered devices that reportedly include a phone without a screen and other AI enabled household products. BYD announced it will unveil its new flagship models, the Han L sedan and and the Tang L SUV at an event on April 9th. Both vehicles feature a 1000v high voltage platform accelerating from 0 to 100km per hour in just over 2 seconds and offering 400km of range with 5 minutes of ultra fast charging. The Han L is priced from 270,000 won or around $37,300 and the Tang L starts at 360,000 won. Eufy's new E15 and E18 robot lawnmowers use smart camera based navigation instead of GPS on boundary wires. Designed to make setup easier and mowing more precise, the E15 handles up to 800 square meters, the E18 up to 1200 square meters, both featuring app control, adjustable cutting height, rain detection and quantity quiet operation. They can't eliminate all manual trimming, but Engadget notes that they offer a solid high tech option for automated lawn care. Starting at $1,599. OpenAI will offer chat GPT plus free to all US and Canadian college students through the end of May. This is designed to give access to advanced AI tools during those college finals. Anthropic's new Claude for Education also highlights uses in higher education. Both companies seem to be building long term user loyalty by being part of how students learn and work with AI. Google is rolling out Gemini Live's camera and screen sharing to Pixel 9 and Galaxy S25 devices, letting users show their screen or real world view for real time help. It's powered by Project Astra and supports full screen sharing and live camera input, with wider access coming soon to all Gemini Advanced Android users. And Finally, Midjourney's new AI image model V7 started rolling out in Alpha on April 3rd. Designed to generate high quality coherent images with better detail in objects and bodies and textures.
