I'm Rob Dun OpenAI CEO Sam Albin has acquired IO, the product development startup founded by former Apple design chief Jony I've in a $6.5 billion all stock deal, I've's 55 person team will join OpenAI to collaborate on new AI driven consumer products with potential innovations including screenless devices like advanced headphones or camera tools. While details remain scarce, the goal is to create technology less socially disruptive than the iPhone. I've will oversee design across OpenAI products through his firm Love, though he won't be a formal employee. The deal follows OpenAI's $3 billion purchase of coding tool Windsurf and a $40 billion funding round. Google introduced Synth ID detector at Google I O, a tool designed to identify content generated by its AI models. This verification portal, as described by Google DeepMind's Pushmeet Coley, can effectively detect AI generated content from Google AI and pinpoint sections likely containing a synth ID watermark. The these watermarks are embedded in AI created images, text, audio and video produced by models such as Gemini and Imagen. The tool analyzes uploaded media to detect these watermarks, identifying specific watermark segments with audio or image files. Currently undergoing testing with a limited group, Synth ID Detector will eventually be available to those on the waitlist, reflecting Google's aim to enhance content transparency. Also at I O, Google announced plans to integrate search and shopping ads into its AI mode For Google search in the appearing below and within AI generated responses where relevant. This test targets advertisers using Performance, Max shopping and broad match search campaigns on desktop and mobile. While Google aims to provide helpful resources, a recent poll suggests US Adults are wary of AI in advertising and may be less inclined to buy from brands using it. This follows similar ad integration explorations by competitors and Google's expansion of ads in AI overviews. Secure messaging app Signal added a screen security feature to its Windows app, using DRM to block message screenshots. Motivated by privacy worries stemming from Windows 11's recall feature, which records screen activity, this feature is on by default but can be turned off. Signal hopes AI developers will prioritize privacy to avoid the need for such app level protections. Windows 11's recall, meant for productivity via screen recording, has been delayed and faces substantial privacy and security criticisms. The FTC has finalized an order against GoDaddy requiring the web hosting giant to enhance its security measures to settle charges stemming from multiple data breaches since 2018. The agency had previously accused GoDaddy of misleading its approximately 5 million customers regarding its security practices and discovered that the company was unaware of vulnerabilities due to insufficient security protocols. The FTC's order prohibits GoDaddy from making further misleading statements about its security and mandates the implementation of comprehensive information security programs, the securing of of APIs with protocols like HTTPs, and the establishment of a program for managing software and firmware updates. TikTok and SoundCloud have partnered to allow users to directly save discovered tracks to their SoundCloud app, expanding TikTok's existing Add to Music app feature, previously available for platforms like Apple Music and Spotify. This integration, where a button appears upon clicking an audio track, automatically adds saved songs to a TikTok playlist on the user's default streaming service, simplifying the process of discovering and saving music on the popular video app. TikTok reports that the Add to Music app feature has resulted in over a billion saved songs since its initial rollout, and SoundCloud integration is now available to all users. Amazon is piloting in AI Powered Audio summaries on select product pages within its shopping app. These short audio clips, voiced by AI Powered Shopping experts, discuss key product features, customer views, and web information accessible via here the Highlights button. The goal is to save customers time and provide convenient conversational product information for items typically requiring more consideration. This feature, currently available to some US Customers, utilizes large language models to generate scripts from various sources and is part of Amazon's suites of AI shopping tools similar to Google's Notebook LM Audio Overviews Google and Samsung are collaborating to introduce a desktop mode to Android, building upon Samsung's Dex platform to enhance windowing capabilities in Android 16. This initiative, revealed at Google I Ought to aims to provide a desktop like experience when connecting Android devices to larger displays, as demonstrated by the layout featuring a taskbar with a common app and adaptive apps that can resize across the screen. Google's development of this feature aligns with the broader goal of making Android more adaptable for various device types, including foldables, tablets, Chromebooks, and even cars. And finally, Meche with Kowiak has achieved a remarkable feat by porting a basic AI dubbed Llama 2C 64 to the Commodore 64, a computer dating back to 1982. This project shows that AI, specifically a 260K Tiny Stories model, can operate on very limited hardware. The system can produce childlike story continuations from simple starting points. Although it's not designed for chat and is admittedly slow, Wikowiak emphasizes the benefits of user control and the unique experience of running AI on such old technology, even humorously comparing the token generation wait time to that of contemporary systems.
