These are the daily Tech Headlines for Thursday, February 6th, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. On Wednesday, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amen announced that ARM holdings has withdrawn its threat to terminate Qualcomm's license agreement. The dispute began in October when ARM challenged Qualcomm over technology it used in its personal computer chips. But ARM recently notified Qualcomm that it has rescinded its October 2024 notice of breach and has no current plans to terminate the agreement. The development follows a December trial in which Qualcomm secured key victories with a jury affirming that his PC chips are properly licensed under the agreement. The jury, however, could not reach a unanimous verdict on other issues, prompting ARM to file a motion for a new trial. OpenAI's ChatGPT has undergone a significant update with its search engine feature now accessible to all users without the need for a login. ChatGPT search, which delivers results based on web information and provides citations for its sources, was initially launched exclusively for paid subscribers in October. However, by December, OpenAI had expanded its availability to include all logged in users, positioning ChatGPT as a direct competitor to established search engines like Google and Bing. Making ChatGPT search available to all without a logon signifies OpenAI's ambition to expand its reach and challenge the dominance of traditional search engine providers. Amazon's upcoming product event on February 26th in New York City appears set to unveil its long awaited generative AI powered version of Alexa. The company sent out five different invites that when combined, spell Alexa, reinforcing its focus on the digital voice assistant. Amazon also confirmed to Reuters that the event will center on Alexa, further suggesting the launch of its revamped assistant. Originally announced in September 2023, the new Alexa has faced multiple delays and challenges in inte its existing features with the updated AI model, but it now seems ready for release. Researchers from Stanford University and the University of Washington have introduced a new AI model called S1 that demonstrates impressive reasoning capabilities on both mathematical encoding tasks comparable to state of the art models. Remarkably, S1 was trained using less than $50 worth of cloud compute credits, making its development cost effective. The team achieved this by employing a technique known as distillation, where S1 learned reasoning abilities from an existing Google A. The researchers have made S1, along with its data and code, freely available on GitHub to promote transparency and further research. This breakthrough highlights the potential of distillation as a cost effective method for developing powerful AI models which could democratize access to A1 technology and accelerate progress in the field. Google is scaling back its diversity, equity and inclusion programs following the lead of Meta, Amazon and other major tech companies. In a memo to employees, Google's head of hr, Fiona Cinconi, announced the removal of DEI hiring targets, citing citing the company's status as a federal contractor and recent court decisions and US executive orders. Additionally, as noted by the Wall Street Journal, Google has removed a statement from its annual SEC reports that previously affirmed its commitment to integrating DEI in all aspects of its operations. Sonos Inc. Is cutting approximately 12% of its workforce, or 200 employees, as part of an effort to make its product teams flatter, smaller and more focused. The Santa Barbara based audio equipment maker announced the layoffs Wednesday during a company wide call informing affected employ shortly thereafter. The decision follows the recent departure of CEO Patrick Spence after the company's botched mobile app revamp, which damaged the Sonos brand and hurt sales amid a major product launch. Interim CEO Tom Conrad told employees that Sonos have become burdened with excessive layers that hindered collaboration in decision making, prompting a restructuring that includes significant changes to its product development team. Lyft and Anthropic have partnered to build an AI assistant that handles initial customer service inquiries for both riders and drivers. This is the first phase of a broader collaboration to research and test new Lyft products and build software. The partnership comes after Uber announced a similar collaboration with OpenAI. Lyft has been using Anthropic's Cloud AI model in its Customer Care AI assistant since late 2024, providing answers to common support issues and redirecting customers to human specialists for more complicated tasks. And finally, Fizz, the college social app, is gearing up for a significant expansion and innovation with the addition of David Vasquez as its new Head of product. Vasquez, who previously led creator and monetization and product for TikTok Shop, brings valuable expertise in driving engagement and revenue growth. Under his leadership, Fizz plans to refine its recommendation system to improve content discovery, broaden its marketplace beyond peer to peer transactions by integrating in app payments and explore new opportunities in video content. Additionally, the company aims to open its platform to advertising and brand partnerships, creating new monetization avenues while enhancing user experience. With these strategic moves, Fizz is positioning itself for long term growth and a stronger foothold in the social media landscape.
