This is the weekend edition of Daily Tech Headlines for the week ending at Saturday, December 13, 2025. I'm Sarah Lane. Let's catch up on a bit of breaking news and essential news over the past several days. The US President issued an executive order directing federal agencies to block or challenge state AI laws, arguing they burden innovation and force ideological bias into AI models. This comes after Congress declined to pass a national preemption bill. The order instructs the Department of Justice to form a task force to sue states, flags laws like Colorado's AI discrimination rules and threatens to withhold broadband and other federal funds. Democrats and AI safety groups say the move overreaches executive authority and undermines states ability to protect residents from AI related harms. On Thursday, Fortune reported that YouTube now lets US based creators receive payouts in PayPal's PyUSD stablecoin coin, building on PayPal's existing bulk payment options. PyUSD is a dollar pegged stablecoin launched back in 2023 and has a 3.9 billion dollar market cap and 113 million in 24 hour trading. PayPal also supports PyUSD in Venmo and lets users pay small businesses in crypto, converting payments to PyUSD at checkout. Apple's first foldable iPhone is expected to launch fall of 2026. Counterpoint Research expects this to drive a projected 46% year over year increase in foldable smartphone panel shipments. The device is reported to open like a book, revealing a larger internal display similar to an iPad mini. People who have foldables already know how this works. Apple has ordered 22 million OLED panels from Samsung. Samsung will supply the displays and see its market share in the space perhaps exceed 50%. Google Translate is rolling out a beta feature for real time translations through any headphones, preserving each speaker's tone and cadence. The update is available now on Android in the US Mexico and India and supports more than 70 languages and will expand to iOS and additional countries in 2026. Google is also integrating advanced Gemini AI for more natural context aware translations. Paramount Skydance entered a hostile $30 per share all cash bid for Warner Brothers Discovery after losing the studio and HBO Max to Netflix. The offer values Warner Bros. Discovery at $108.4 billion versus Netflix's 82.7 billion, but also includes Discovery TV networks, which Netflix was not planning to buy. Paramount CEO David Ellison told CNBC he's also willing to go higher on that bid. He also says Netflix faces tougher regulatory scrutiny, while Paramount expects a faster path given its smaller size and friendlier terms with the US Administration. Speaking of the administration, the US President says the Netflix Warner Brothers Discovery deals combined market share could be a problem and that he will personally be involved in the review. Bloomberg says Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos met with the president last month to argue the merger would not create a monopoly. If the current deal goes through, Netflix and HBO Max would control around 33% of the US streaming market. Amazon pulled an AI generated recap video for Fallout season one after fans flagged multiple factual errors, including the show's timeline and character relationships. The video used Prime Video's AI recap feature introduced earlier this year and was removed without public comment following backlash. The move comes shortly after Amazon also rolled back an AI dubbing experiment for anime after criticism from both fans and voice actors. Reddit filed a lawsuit in Australia's high court to challenge the nation's new ban on social media access for children under the age of 16. Reddit argues the World First Law is an unconstitutional restriction on free political communication, especially for young people who will soon be eligible to vote. The Australian government has vowed to vigorously defend the ban, accusing Reddit of prioritizing profits over protecting minors. Oracle denied a Bloomberg report claiming delays in building data centers for OpenAI, saying that all milestones tied to its contract remain on track despite investor concerns that sent the stock down more than 4% on Friday. Oracle did not offer a timeline for when cloud infrastructure for OpenAI will go live. As OpenAI continues to line up large but mostly non binding capacity agreements with partners including Nvidia and Broadcom, HBO Max is launching Curated Always on channels that continuously stream popular shows, franchises or genres including Friends, Game of Thrones, dc, Harry Potter and the Sopranos. The feature is designed to reduce decision fatigue and recreate a linear TV style experience while still letting viewers rewind, fast forward or skip episodes. 12 themed channels are available at launch to users who have adult profiles.
