These are the daily tech headlines for Friday, May 23rd, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. President Donald Trump has cautioned Apple that iPhones sold in the US will be subject to a minimum 25% tariff unless the company move its production to the United States. This warning, shared on Truth Social, reiterates a previous communication with where Trump insisted that iPhones for the American market should be manufactured domestically, not in countries like India. Trump's statement comes after reports of Apple's plans To source all US iPhones from India, a move facilitated by increased Indian production and investments like Foxconn's new display plant in Chennai. Apple's diversification of production locations has been ongoing, spurred by events such as the COVID 19 pandemic and US China relations. Trump also alluded to a recent issue with Tim Cook prior to this announcement. The U.S. federal Trade Commission has ended its attempt to block Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, stating that continuing the case after the deal's completion in 2023 was not in the public interest. This decision follows an unsuccessful appeal to overturn a judge's refusal to block the merger. FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson is reportedly shifting the agency's focus towards cases aligning with President Trump's agenda, including an investigation into potential advertiser collusion regarding spending on X and discontinuing initiatives from his predecessor. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple intends to release smart glasses with cameras, microphones and speakers by the end of 2026, enabling users to interact with Siri, play music, make calls and get directions. This launch precedes Apple's longer term goal of augmented reality glasses, though their AI advancements have trailed behind competitors. Despite expectations for AI reveals at WWDC 2025, the somewhat inconsistent rollout of Apple Intelligence might lead to skepticism. BlueSky has introduced a new verification system allowing notable and authentic individual accounts to apply for verification through an online form. Additionally, organizations can become trusted verifiers, granting them the ability to verify other accounts. This feature was initially tested with a select group of organizations including the New York Times, Wired and the Atlantic, before its wider Release on Thursday. OpenAI is collaborating with G42, an AI firm in the UAE backed by its sovereign wealth fund, to build a massive gigawatt data center in Abu Dhabi, representing a significant international expansion of OpenAI's AI infrastructure initiative, Stargate. As part of the agreement, G42 will reciprocally invest the same amount in AI infrastructure within the United States. This substantial data center, much larger than any announced by OpenAI or its competitors, could broaden the global reach of US developed AI software. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that this project marks a step towards allowing crucial advancements to originate from diverse locations for global benefit. Xiaomi has introduced its first high performance in house chipset, the Zhring 01, aiming to compete with top tier processors like Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite. This chip powers their new 15S Pro phone and Pad 7 Ultra tablet, which boasts a thin design and a large battery. The Zhring 01 features a 10 core CPU and 16 core GPU, achieving high benchmark scores and emphasizing power efficiency. Additionally, Xiaomi unveiled the Zhring T1, a smartwatch chipset with a 4G modem featured in a new Watch S4 model model. These developments signal Xiaomi's ambition to become more self reliant in chip design, potentially impacting their relationship with long term supplier Qualcomm, despite a recent multi year agreement between the two companies. For the first time, BYD surpassed Tesla in European electric vehicle sales in April, registering 7231 new vehicles, a 169% increase year over year, and moving into the top 10 EV brands, while Tesla's registrations plummeted by 49% according to JATO Dynamics. This shift, despite a 28% overall growth in Europe's EV market, marks a watershed moment as Tesla has historically led the segment even as Volkswagen and EV sales grew by 61% and Skoda's more than triple. Discord is exploring new features to improve knowledge sharing in large communities, including enhanced forum functionalities and AI powered conversation summaries. This initiative aims to address the challenges of navigating extensive discussions and the limitations of real time chat for structured information, particularly for new users. While details are scarce, Discord intends to make information more accessible without adding excessive burden on server moderators. And finally, Notepad has really changed these past few years. It's gone from barely being updated to throwing in all sorts of AI tricks, including the ability to rewrite and summarize content and even write entire chunks of text from just a few words. These AI features, however, do require a Microsoft 365 subscription because using them will cost you credits allotted to you based on your level of account. Free accounts get 15 credits per month and a personal or family plan gets 60. You can, however, disable the AI features in the settings or use a local account if you prefer to use Notepad without all the AI enhancements.
