These are the daily tech headlines for Wednesday, January 22, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwoody. Microsoft has revised its multi year agreement with OpenAI, allowing the AI startup to use cloud computing services from rival providers, provided Microsoft does not seek the business itself. The agreement, which extends until 2030, grants Microsoft the right of first refusal when OpenAI requires computing power for training and running its AI models. Previously, Microsoft was OpenAI's exclusive cloud provider, though a one time exemption last year permitted OpenAI to purchase capacity from Oracle. Additionally, the updated deal allows OpenAI to develop some of its own cloud computing infrastructure, primarily for research and modeling training. OpenAI has announced a partnership with Japanese conglomerate SoftBank and Oracle to launch the Stargate project, a joint venture aimed at building multiple AI focused data centers across the United States, starting with a major facility in Texas. The project will eventually expand to other states with an initial investment of $100 billion and plans to scale up to $500 billion over the next four years. The the initiative is expected to create hundreds of thousands of jobs and strengthen the US leadership in AI. In a joint statement, OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank emphasize that Stargate will not only advance AI's infrastructure, but also support the re industrialization of the US and enhance national security for America and its allies. At a press conference with Oracle co founder Larry Ellison, President Donald Trump stated that he would be open to Elon Musk or Larry Ellison buying TikTok. President Trump proposed that the buyer give half of TikTok to the United States and exchange for a permit and suggested negotiating the deal in front of the media. Ellison responded positively to the idea. Although the specifics of how this agreement would work and how the US could legally operate a speech platform without violating the First Amendment are unclear, the situation exemplifies how the Silicon Valley's close relationship with the Trump administration could play out over the next four years. The Trump administration has launched a task force focused on developing a regulatory framework for crypto assets. This marks the first major move by the new administration to reform crypto policy. President Trump, who vowed to be a crypto president during his campaign, has promised to revise the industry crackdown led by the SEC under the Biden administration. The previous administration had sued several crypto companies, including Coinbase and Kraken, for alleged rule violations. Google is increasing its investment in AI developer Anthropic, best known for its Claude family of large language models, with an additional $1 billion building on the more than $2 billion Google has already committed, according to a source familiar with the matter. The tech giant also maintains a agreement with Anthropic involving the use of its suite of online tools and services. Neither Anthropic nor Google provided immediate comments on the new funding. Netflix announced another round of price increases in its latest earnings report, raising rates across most plans in the U.S. canada, Portugal and Argentina. According to spokesperson Momo Zhao. The ad supported tier will rise from $6.99 to $7.99 per month, the standard ad free tier will increase from $15.49 to $17.99 per month and the premium tier will go from $22.99 to $24. The new prices will take effect during subscribers next billing cycle following a streaming rights deal with Roku X Games is advancing further into the digital realm by partnering with Google to pilot AI judging technology. Google will use AI to evaluate moves in ski and snowbird competitions on the event's signature 20 foot tall super Pipe Freestyle course, replacing human judges. While AI and digital innovations have already transformed the sports world, this unusual application in judge sports opens up intriguing possibilities for disciplines like figure skating, diving and gymnastics, the announcement of the new system said. It aims to explore the potential for enhancing objectivity in judge sports, increasing fan engagement and providing athletes with additional insights into their performances. The AI system will debut during this year's X Games Aspen, according to Investment Minister Rozan Rosolani. Indonesia is nearing a deal with Apple for an investment plan that would lift the ban on iPhone 16 sales in the country. Rosalani told Bloomberg News they are expressing hope for a resolution within one to two weeks. The ban in proposed last year, stems from Apple's failure to meet Indonesia's requirement that 40% of smartphone components be locally made. While Apple does not have a manufacturing facility in Indonesia, it has operated application development academies there since 2018. Neither Apple nor the Indonesian government provided immediate comments on the matter. And finally, YouTube is rolling out new experimental features for premium users such as high quality audio, a faster playback speed option on mobile, and the ability to jump ahead on the web to skip to more engaging parts of event video. Users can activate these features via YouTube.com new, including one that enables a higher audio bitrate of up to 256kbps for music videos, a quality already available on YouTube music when playback settings are set to high.
