These are the daily tech headlines for Wednesday, March 26, 2025. I'm Sarah Lane. Ars Technica published a report on Tuesday about aggressive AI crawlers that are overwhelming open source developer projects by consuming bandwidth, bypassing security measures and causing service disruptions. According to a comprehensive recent report from Libra News, some projects report up to 97% of their traffic now come from AI bots, leading to increased costs and instability. In response, some devs are deploying proof of work challenges, blocking entire countries and using AI labyrinths to mislead bots, and say that AI firms are showing little willingness to cooperate or regulate their data collection practices. MIT Technology Review sources say China's AI data center boom is facing larger previous investments than eventual demand, leaving many facilities not used or unused altogether. New models like Deep SEQ that run more efficiently have reduced demand for large scale training, with centers now facing financial struggles and some operators exploiting government incentives rather than focusing on AI development. Speaking of AI development, OpenAI has added AI image generation to ChatGPT using GPT4O, letting users create and edit images directly within the chat. The model improves accuracy, text rendering and object handling and includes safeguards like metadata, tagging and content restrictions. The feature is available to everyone, free +Pro and team users with enterprise and Edu support Coming soon Apple announced that WWDC 2025 will take place June 9th through the 13th with mostly online sessions and an in person event at Apple park on that first day, the 9th. This is designed to showcase the latest in Apple software. We expect to Hear more about iOS 19, iPadOS 19, Mac OS 16, WatchOS 12, TVOS 19 and Vision OS 3. IOS 19 is rumored to have the biggest design overhaul since iOS 7. As in previous years, the event is free for developers with limited in person attendance available through an application process. Apple Music launched a feature called DJ with Apple Music so subscribers can integrate its 100 million song library library with DJ software and hardware like Serato, Denon DJ and Newmark. Previous DJ friendly Apple Music features include curated playlists and live DJ mixes, making it easier if you're a DJ to discover and perform music in real time. And Reuters reports that Indonesia will lift its ban on the iPhone 16 on April 11 after Apple agreed to invest over $300 million in the country. The dispute started when Indonesia, which has a population of 280 million, claimed that Apple came up short on a previous local investment commitment. Earlier reports suggested that Apple might invest up to $1 billion over the next 10 years, so this final deal's lower amount may be a renegotiation or part of a longer investment deal. Amazon is testing a new interests AI tool to help users find products through conversational search and a new health AI tool to offer medical guidance and product recommendations. These features are currently in beta and point to Amazon's broader new AI strategy, including Alxa and its AI driven e commerce and healthcare plans. A Tech Insights study found that producing wafers at TSMC's Fab 21, which is in Arizona, is only about 10% more expensive than doing the same in Taiwan, despite higher US labor costs. The big cost driver in semiconductor manufacturing is equipment labor is more expensive in the US but accounts for less than 2% of total production costs due to automation. So the takeaway from the study is that building a FAB in the US Is costlier upfront, but the operational expense gap between Arizona and Taiwan is minimal. And finally, Microsoft is launching two advanced AI tools for CoPilot researcher and analyst, designed to analyze vast work data. So researcher aids in complex research by combining internal data with external sources for market strategies, while Analyst functions like a data scientist, using AI to forecast trends and process raw data. Both tools will be available in April for Microsoft365 copilot users through the New Frontier program. For more analysis of the Tech news of the day, subscribe to Daily Tech News Show. 2. Developer Responses to AI Bot Overload
In response to the overwhelming influx of AI-driven traffic, developers are implementing various countermeasures. These include deploying proof-of-work challenges, blocking traffic from entire countries, and creating complex AI labyrinths designed to mislead and deter bots. Despite these efforts, AI firms are reportedly showing minimal willingness to cooperate or regulate their data collection practices, exacerbating the issue.

3. China's AI Data Center Investments Facing Challenges
Sarah transitions to discuss insights from the MIT Technology Review, which reveals that China's surge in AI data center investments is outpacing actual demand. Many facilities remain underutilized or entirely unused due to overestimation of future needs. The advent of more efficient AI models, such as Deep SEQ, which require less intensive training resources, has further diminished the demand for large-scale data centers. Consequently, these centers are grappling with financial difficulties, with some operators taking advantage of government incentives without focusing on meaningful AI development.
