These are the daily tech headlines for Wednesday, February 12, 2025. I'm SA in a post on foreign policy, security technologist Bruce Schneier warns that the Department of Government Efficiency, also known as doge, which accessed critical US Government systems, including the treasury and personnel databases, compromised sensitive data and dismantled security protocols and may be the most consequential security breach in US history. On February 8, a federal judge blocked the DOGE team from accessing the Treasury Department systems any further, but a lot of questions remain about what damage has been done in various government departments, such as introducing severe national security risks and potential vulnerabilities to foreign adversaries, Schneier warns. Urgent actions are needed to revoke access, restore, monitoring and audit all changes to secure the compromise systems. Adobe released its AI powered Generate video tool in public beta through the redesigned Firefly Web app, offering text to video and image to video features that generate 1080p clips up to 5 seconds long. Wired and 404 Media jointly report Lithuanian ad tech company Eskimai was the source of sensitive location data on US Military personnel overseas, which was sold by Florida based data broker Data Stream Group. The data included precise coordinates from devices at US military sites in Germany and then collected through SDKs in mobile apps. US Senator Ron Wyden's office raised national security concerns contacting Eskomai, Lithuania's data protection authority and Google, which listed Eskomai as an authorized buyer. The Lithuanian DPA is assessing the situation and Eskomai could face penalties under GDPR if found in violation. Forbes sources say that Meta is in discussions to acquire South Korean chip startup Furiosa AI, with a deal potentially closing as early as this month. Although Meta is said to not be the only company interested in this deal, the acquisition could help Meta's custom chip development efforts amid an ongoing Nvidia chip shortage and increasing demand for alternative solutions. Apple now allows users to consolidate digital purchases from two Apple accounts by migrating content from a secondary account to a primary one. This would be something for apps, books, music, TV shows and movies. Anything that you buy. To achieve this you have to sign in on an iPhone or iPad with one account for iCloud and another for media and purchases, you have to make sure both accounts are set to the same country and then follow a checklist provided by Apple. After migration, the secondary account can no longer be used for purchases. The feature is not available in the eu, the UK or India. Kickstarter is rolling out new tools for backers and creators and including Pledge over Time, which lets you split pledges into four bi weekly payments available for select campaigns now and expanding to everyone sometime this spring. Improved search and discovery tools are also on the way and creators will get new add ons for extra perks, better shipping management and a streamlined tax system. BYD founder Wang Shumpfu says that the company plans to make all its models self driving. This includes the $9,600 seagull. He emphasized that autonomous driving is an essential tool, not a luxury. And finally, Apple launched the Powerbeats Pro 2 online Tuesday for $250 with active noise cancellation, with transparency mode, personalized spatial audio and an H2 chip for better efficiency.
