These are the Daily Tech Headlines for Friday, June 20, 2025 I'm Rob Dunwoody. Softbank Group CEO Masayosi Son reportedly plans a US $1 trillion industrial complex in Arizona named Project Crystal Land to create a robotics and AI hub like China's Shenzhen. He seeks collaboration with TSMC and Samsung for high end tech manufacturing in the US Requesting significant government tax breaks and support. Softbank officials are already engaging with federal and state authorities. While TSMC is investing in US Chipmaking, its role in the project is uncertain. This proposed investment follows other major Softbank investment Earlier this year, Meta Platforms Inc. Is broadening its Smart Glasses collection with the new Oakley models aimed at athletes. Building on the success of earlier versions, these new glasses, which start at $399 and go up to $499 for a limited edition, are based on Oakley's HSTN aesthetic and move beyond previous Ray Ban exclusive designs. They offer improved features like enhanced video recording with 3K resolution, approximately double the battery life, and water resistance, while still allowing users to make calls, play music, capture photos and videos, and utilize Meta's AI for environmental inquiries. Foxconn and Nvidia are reportedly in discussions to introduce humanoid robots at a new Foxconn factory in Houston, which will be dedicated to producing Nvidia AI servers. This collaboration would mark the first instance of an Nvidia product being manufactured with the aid of humanoid robots and Foxconn's initial use of such robots on an AI server production line. This development, anticipated to be finalized in the coming months, represents a significant advancement in the integration of human like robots robots poised to be revolutionary in the manufacturing process. Microsoft Office apps on Android now support anonymous viewing of shared Word, Excel and PowerPoint files from personal Microsoft accounts, a feature previously rolled out for iOS. This allows recipients to open and view shared files via web links even without signing into their Office apps, streamlining content review on mobile devices. However, editing or commenting on these files or viewing documents shared from an enterprise account still requires a Microsoft account login. Microsoft plans to regularly remove outdated drivers from Windows Update to enhance security and compatibility. This cleanup process involves removing older drivers, especially those with newer replacements, to ensure the optimal set of drivers is available. While this will prevent some drivers from being offered to Windows based systems, partners can still republish drivers if they have a valid business reason. This initiative aims to maintain a secured and reliable Windows experience for users. With new publishing guidelines expected in the future, mobile phones are becoming the sole source of media and entertainment for nearly a quarter of people in India, 23% in Q1 2025, up from 15% in Q1 2023, especially among lower socioeconomic rural and male users. This shift is driven by widespread Internet access, affordable smartphones and low mobile tariffs. Global media companies will need to adjust their marketing strategies to reach this growing mobile centric audience. In India, the zenimax Workers United CWA Union has ratified its first ever contract agreement with parent company Microsoft, marking a significant milestone as Microsoft's initial union contract in the US this agreement, following the ZeniMax Quality Assurance employees 2023 votes to unionize and Microsoft's subsequent recognition and neutrality policy includes provisions for wage increases, minimum salaries, a career crediting policy for QA roles, and protections regarding the use of AI. Google's decision to conceal the raw reasoning tokens of its Gemini 2.5 Pro model has ignited strong opposition from developers who depended on this transparency for application development and debugging, a move reminiscent of OpenAI's similar action. This change, which substitutes the model's detailed reasoning with a concise summary, underscores a fundamental conflict between delivering a refined user experience and offering the transparent, dependable tools essential for enterprises. Electrify Expo, known for its five years of electric vehicle educational festivals across the US Is introducing a new demo program allowing attendees to test an EV at home for a weekend, starting with Tesla. CEO BJ Burtwell emphasizes this initiative offers a no pressure non sales experience for individuals to integrate an electric vehicle into their daily lives and determine its suitability. He anticipates more brands to join the program soon. And finally, Amazon has rolled out a new Software Update, version 5.18.3 for several recent Kindle models, including the Kindle Scribe, Kindle ColorSoft, and 11th and 12th Generation Basic Kindle and Paperwhite models. While the official release notes only mention general improvements, the ebook reader spotted significant upgrades to text and line spacing adjustments, enhancing legibility and accessibility for many users. The update is being distributed automatically, but users can also download and manually install the specific update for their e reader.
