These are the daily tech headlines for Tuesday, September 30, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek is stepping down as CEO by end of year to become Executive Chairman. He will be replaced by two internal co CEOs Gust Roderstrom and Alex Norstrom. X stated this change formalizes an existing structure allowing him to focus on long term vision and noted Spotify has been profitable for over a year. Core Weave has announced a $14 billion agreement with Meta to provide computing power, highlighting the increasing demand for AI infrastructure. CoreWeave's shares rose by 12% following the news. Meta will pay approximately $14.2 billion by December 14, 2031, with an option to extend the agreement through 2032 for additional cloud computing cap. OpenAI is developing a new social media app similar to TikTok that will exclusively feature AI generated video content from its upcoming Sora 2 model. The app will limit videos to 10 seconds, include an identity verification tool, and have some copyright restrictions. With rights holders potentially needing to opt out, this initiative is seen as a strategic move to capitalize on TikTok's uncertain U.S. future and cultivate a community around Sora. Google Drive for Desktop is launching a new open beta feature that utilizes an AI model trained on millions of real world ransomware samples to detect and prevent ransomware on Windows and macOS systems. This AI will identify and stop malicious file modifications such as mass encryption, automatically preventing affected drive files from syncing. Users will be alerted and can restore files to an older version. This feature is expected to be generally available by the end of the year and aims to combat the increasing number of ransomware attacks by continually adapting its detective engine to new threats. Opera's new AI browser Neon acts as a productivity hub capable of tasks like code execution and form filling directly on web pages. Features include Neon DO for page navigation, tasks for AI analysis and cards for prompt templates. This intensifies the browser market with competitors like Perplexity AI in the browser company and OpenAI developing its own. Neon is a privacy first on device subscription product for power users, appealing to those in regions with strict data data regulations. Popular image hosting platform Imgur has blocked access to its content for users in the UK as of September 30, 2025. This decision follows an investigation by the UK's Information Commissioner's Office into Imgur's age checks and its handling of children's personal data, with the ICO reportedly planning to find Imgur's parent company, Media Lab AI. Consequently, UK users attempting to access Imgur or view embedded Imgur content on other websites will now encounter an error message indicating that content is unavailable in their region. Google's AI Mode now includes a conversational search feature that lets users find images and shop for products using natural language descriptions instead of filters. This update, which allows continuous refinement of searches and even starting with an image upload for visual exploration built on Google Search with Lens Image search and Gemini 2.5. It's rolling out to US users this week, enhancing AI Mode's ability to understand visual context and provide more precise image search results. California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed SB 53, a bill that establishes new transparency and safety requirements for large AI companies in the state. The legislation, which includes reporting critical safety incidents and whistleblower protection, faced mixed reactions and lobbying efforts from some tech firms but was endorsed by Anthropic. Newsom views it as a model for balancing innovation with public safety, potentially influencing other states like New York. Google's parent company Alphabet has agreed to a $24.5 million settlement in a lawsuit filed by then former President Donald Trump in 2021 stemming from a YouTube suspension of his account after the January 6 Capitol attack. Of this sum, $22 million will be contributed to the Trust for National Mall specifically to support the construction of a 90,000 square foot White House state ballroom. The remaining 2.5 million will settle claims with other plaintiffs, including the American Conservative Union. While Alphabet admits no wrongdoing, both parties have agreed to dismiss the case. And finally, Adobe has released a free mobile version of its Premiere video editing app for iPhone, with an Android version in development. The app is optimized for mobile and includes features such as multi track timeline, 4K HDR editing, auto generated captions and color shadow adjustments for individual frames.
