The European Union has fined Apple 500 million euros under the Digital Markets act for restricting alternative payments options in its App Store. Meta was also fined 200 million euros for forcing users into accepting personalized ads. Both companies must now comply with new rules or face further penalties. Both Apple and Meta say they plan to appeal these decisions, arguing the rules are unfair and and damaging to their business models. Meta is rolling out live translations for its Ray Ban smart glasses in English, French, Italian and Spanish. The feature works offline with downloaded language packs. Other updates include new color lens options for the Ray Ban metaskyler frames and new AI features based on what Aware sees. Meta AI will soon be available across the eu, and the glasses will launch soon in Mexico, India and the United Arab Emirates. Access to music apps like Spotify and Apple Music is also expanding internationally. New data from Counterpoint Research estimates that global PC shipments rose 6.7% year over year in Q1, with some vendors accelerating shipments ahead of anticipated US tariffs and growing demand for AI enabled PCs. Apple and Lenovo led with the most growth. Bloomberg reports that intel is said to be preparing to lay off over 21,000 employees, roughly 20% of its workforce, as part of CEO LIP Bhutan's efforts to streamline management and refocus on engineering. The cuts follow a difficult period for the company, including a major stock decline and a recent divestment of its altera chip business. WhatsApp is rolling out a new advanced chat privacy feature to prevent a chatter from exporting chat content or auto downloading media or or using AI integrations. The feature is opt in and available for individual and group chats and will expand globally over the next couple of months. If you're wondering if screenshot prevention is part of this, the company has not confirmed Results of A Pew Research study in the US found that 48% of teens say social media sites have a negative impact on people their age, but only 14% believe they themselves are affected negatively. Teen girls were more likely than boys to say so 55% of parents were concerned about teen mental health 35% of those teens actually were. 44% of parents also say social media is the biggest threat to teen mental health, while 22% of those teens also say that to celebrate its 20th anniversary, YouTube announced some impressive milestones, for example 20 trillion video uploads and announced some upcoming new features, including 4x playback for premium users, customizable multi view on YouTube TV, and a redesigned TV app UI. Voice replies in comments and expanded AI features are also on the way. A global rollout of these updates is expected over the coming months. Google is not rolling out a new standalone prompt for third party cookie choices in Chrome. It's a reversal from Google's earlier plans to phase them out, citing mixed industry feedback and ongoing regulatory scrutiny. Google's privacy sandbox initiatives will continue, though critics argue the project doesn't have a whole lot of momentum. And finally, in new testimony from the remedy hearing in Google's antitrust trial, the company says it's paying Samsung each month to pre install its Gemini AI app on Galaxy S25 devices. The two year deal includes monthly payments and a cut of ad revenue and began after Google was found guilty of antitrust violations. The U.S. department of justice calls this an enormous sum, arguing that Google's practices should face stricter penalties, like breaking up parts of its business.
