These are the Daily Tech headlines for Thursday, April 17th, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwoody. The New York Times reports that the Trump administration is considering new restrictions on the Chinese AI lab Deepseek. The restrictions could include limiting Deepseek from buying Nvidia's AI chips and potentially barring Americans from accessing its AI services. These restrictions are part of the Trump administration's effort to compete with China on AI. As US Officials are weighing several options to limit China's access to American technologies and consumers. TikTok is introducing a new crowdsource fact checking feature called Footnotes that allows users to add context to videos. The feature, similar to X's Community Notes, aims to provide additional information and foster a consensus driven approach to discussions. But unlike Meta's community notes, TikTok Footnotes will not impact content, moderation policies, fact checking partnerships, or the video's algorithmic ranking. The company views Footnotes as a way for users to contribute missing details without affecting the platform's overall functionality. In an effort to deter AI bots from scraping its platform and straining its servers, Wikimedia has partnered with Kaggle to release a beta DataSET optimized for AI training. The data set, designed with machine learning workflows in mind, provides structured Wikipedia content in English and French including research summaries, short descriptions, image links, info box data and article sections, all in an easily accessible machine readable format. Wikimedia believes that this data set will be a more attractive alternative to scraping raw article text, and Kaggle is excited to play a role in keeping this data accessible. Perplexity AI is making strategic moves to secure prominent placement for its virtual assistant on smartphones. The company has already finalized a deal with Motorola and is in early discussions with Samsung. The Motorola partnership will be announced at a product event in New York City on April 24. While the terms of the Samsung deal are still under negotiation, potential arrangements with Samsung include offering Proplexity as a default AI assistant, preloading the Propexity app on Android, or promoting it within the Galaxy Store. The Trump administration intends to eliminate the IRS's direct file program, a free electronic tax filing system developed during the Biden administration. Republican lawmakers and commercial tax preparation companies criticized it as a waste of taxpayer money, arguing that existing free filing programs, albeit less user friendly, already exist. The program's fate has been uncertain since the start of the Trump administration, when the Department of Government Efficiency started implementing widespread cuts, including the elimination of 18F, a government agency involved in technology projects like DirectFile. Google is now offering its Gemini Live video screen sharing features to almost all Android users for free. The features, which were initially available only to Pixel 9, Samsung Galaxy S25 owners and Google One AI Premium subscribers, allows users to ask Gemini about anything on their screen or in front of them. Due to positive feedback, Google is expanding the availability to all Android devices with 2 gigabytes of RAM or more and running Android 10 and up over the coming weeks. The web conferencing service Zoom's platform was back online Wednesday evening after an outage that lasted for much of the afternoon. Zoom posted on X around 2:00pm Pacific Time that the service had been restored. The outage, which began around 11:40am caused users to have trouble logging in and entering meetings. Zoom's site and media inbox also went down. More than 59,000 users reported issues on Downdetector.com the cause of the outage is unclear, but the Verge speculates that it may have been due to DNS related issues. Microsoft has introduced a new computer use feature for CoPilot studio, enabling AI agents to interact with websites and desktop applications. Similar to OpenAI's operator and Claude's computer use, this feature allows businesses to build AI agents that can automate tasks by treating websites and desktop apps as tools. Charles lamanna, corporate vice president of Microsoft's business and industry copilot explains that the agents can interact with these applications by clicking buttons, selecting menus and typing in the fields even when there's no API available. And finally, LG has partnered with Zenapps to use their AI powered emotional intelligence software to show ads on LG Smart TVs that are more closely aligned with viewers personal beliefs and emotions. Synapse technology interprets psychological factors such as personal interests, personality traits and lifestyle choices to categorize users into hyper specific market segments. LG will use this technology to show Targeted ads on WebOS, home screenshots, fast channels and other areas. Additionally, LG plans to utilize X's tech for new software development and go to market products. Rob Dunwoody introduces the primary news item: "The New York Times reports that the Trump administration is considering new restrictions on the Chinese AI lab DeepSeek." These proposed restrictions aim to limit DeepSeek's ability to purchase Nvidia's advanced AI chips and potentially bar American citizens from accessing its AI-driven services. This move is part of a broader strategy by the administration to enhance the United States' competitiveness in the AI sector against China. Dunwoody emphasizes, "These restrictions are part of the Trump administration's effort to compete with China on AI." The discussion highlights the potential implications for the global AI market and technological collaborations between the U.S. and China.
[02:45]
The hosts explore TikTok’s latest feature, Footnotes, designed to enhance content transparency. Dunwoody explains, "Footnotes allows users to add context to videos, similar to X's Community Notes." Unlike other platforms, TikTok ensures that Footnotes won't influence content moderation policies or algorithmic rankings. Instead, it's a tool for users to contribute additional information, thereby fostering a more informed and consensus-driven discussion environment without altering the platform's functionality.
[03:30]
In an effort to combat AI bots scraping its platform, Wikimedia has partnered with Kaggle to release a beta DataSET optimized for AI training. Dunwoody notes, "The data set provides structured Wikipedia content in English and French, including research summaries, short descriptions, and more, all in a machine-readable format." Dunwoody reveals, "The company has already finalized a deal with Motorola and is in early discussions with Samsung." The partnership with Motorola will be unveiled at an event on April 24 in New York City, while discussions with Samsung may lead to Proplexity being offered as a default AI assistant or preloaded on Android devices. These collaborations aim to secure a prominent position for Perplexity AI in the competitive smartphone market.

The Trump administration is moving to discontinue the IRS's Direct File program, a free electronic tax filing system initiated during the Biden administration. Dunwoody states, "Republican lawmakers and commercial tax preparation companies criticized it as a waste of taxpayer money." The program's termination aligns with broader government efficiency measures, including cuts to agencies like 18F, which supported technology projects like DirectFile.

Google is broadening access to its Gemini Live video screen sharing capabilities. Initially exclusive to Pixel 9 and Samsung Galaxy S25 owners, as well as Google One AI Premium subscribers, the feature will soon be available to nearly all Android users with devices running Android 10 or higher and equipped with at least 2GB of RAM. The hosts discuss the potential impact on Zoom's reputation and user trust.

According to Charles Lamanna, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Business and Industry Copilot, "The agents can interact with these applications by clicking buttons, selecting menus, and typing in the fields even when there's no API available." This advancement allows businesses to automate tasks more effectively, leveraging AI to enhance productivity across various software environments.

LG has entered a partnership with Zenapps to incorporate AI-powered emotional intelligence software into its Smart TVs. This technology analyzes psychological factors such as personal interests and lifestyle choices to deliver hyper-specific targeted advertisements.
