Rob Dunwoody (1:50)
These are the daily Tick headlines for Tuesday, January 21, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwoody. The Trump administration's Justice Department, via executive order, will not enforce the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary controlled Applications act, aka the TikTok ban, for 75 days, effectively extending the amount of time the company has to reach a deal. In a statement, President Trump criticized the unfortunate timing of the law, which took effect during President Joe Biden's final hours in office, claiming it, quote, hinders my ability to evaluate the national security and foreign policy implications of the Act's prohibitions before their implementation. End quote Stated that he will review sensitive intelligence regarding the national security concerns raised by the app's critics and assess the adequacy of the mitigation measures TikTok has implemented so far. End quote Instagram is capitalizing on TikTok's absence from app stores by offering creators cash bonuses of $10,000 to $50,000 per month to exclusively post reels on its platform before sharing them elsewhere, according to the information. While Meta has previously increased payouts to compete with TikTok, such incentives have been short lived. Instagram launched a RE bonus program in 2021, but by 2022 payments were reduced and the program was discontinued entirely in 2023. Meta's Account center, which allows users to manage their Facebook, Instagram and Meta Quest logins, is expanding to include WhatsApp, enabling users to reshare statuses and posts across platforms and use single sign on to access their WhatsApp account. Meta announced the update today, but will roll out gradually. Additionally, Meta plans to introduce more cross platform features such as AI stickers, avatars and AI selfies. Meta has assured users that these changes will not compromise WhatsApp's end to end encryption or the privacy and security of messages. In other Meta news, the company confirmed that it will keep fact checkers outside of the U.S. for now, even though it announced earlier this month that it will replace its fact checkers with a community note system similar to what's in place at Elon Musk X. We'll see how that goes as we move it out over the year, meta's head of global business Nikola Mendelsohn, told Bloomberg in a report from Davos on Monday. So nothing changing in the rest of the world at the moment? We're still working with those fact checkers around the world, end quote. The UK government is set to launch a secure digital wallet for managing government issued credentials, along with a chatbot developing collaboration with OpenAI to enhance interactions with the main gov UK portal named Chat UK. The chatbot will be integrated into a broader portal app, as announced today. The government plans to introduce virtual driver's license and a virtual veteran card for military personnel as the first two credentials in its secure digital wallet, aiming to launch the service later this year. While the FullGov.uk portal is scheduled to go live in 2025, testing of the chat service has already begun with ordinary users invited to participate, Peter Kyle, the UK Secretary of State for Technology, acknowledged during a press conference that some chatbot responses might still be a bit unusual. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodi revealed that the company plans to introduce a two way voice mode for his chatbot Claude, along with a memory feature that allows Claude to retain information about users and past convers. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Amodi also shared that Anthropic expects to release smarter AI models in the coming months. Amodi also acknowledged that the company has been overwhelmed by the surge in demand over the past year. Particularly in the last three months, he noticed that the demand has exceeded the company's ability to provide the necessary compute resources. Cole Needham, the founder of IMDb, is stepping down as CEO of the Amazon owned entertainment information site and transitioning to the role of Executive Chair. Nikki Santoro, who has been IMDb's chief operating officer since 2021, has been appointed as CEO, becoming only the second person to hold a position in the site's 35 year history. In his new role, Needham will provide strategic guidance, consult on key initiatives and serve as a Global Ambassador for IMDb. He will remain based in IMDb's Bristol office and continue his involvement as a board member of Into Film and Film Independent, while he also is serving as a global brand ambassador for the British Board of Film Classification and finally Canada's largest school board. The Toronto District School Board has announced that hackers may have access to up to 40 years of student data during the recent PowerSchool breach affecting all students enrolled from September 1985 to December 2024. Serving approximately 240,000 students annually, TDSB stored historical student information in PowerSchool to fulfill requests for former student records. The compromised data includes names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers and for more recent records from 2017, contact information for parents and guardians. TDSB stated that PowerSchool informed them that hackers allegedly confirmed the stolen data was deleted, although the company has not commented on the nature of the confirmation.
