These are the daily tech headlines for Monday, January 20, 2025. Sarah I'm Sarah Lane. TikTok is back online in the US After a relatively temporary shutdown over the weekend tied to the federal ban. The app credits President Trump for restoring service, though as of this recording it's still unavailable in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. TikTok faces continued uncertainty, with legal challenges and tech companies hesitant to distribute the app. President Trump pledged to issue an executive order once he takes office that extends TikTok's timeline to be sold. He said there would be no liability for companies that support TikTok even before his order goes into effect. Although the US Tik Tok shutdown was brief, it did give rival companies an opportunity to launch some competing products. We'll start with Meta, which is launching a new video editing app called Edits that acts a lot like Cap Cut, set to debut on iOS next month with Android to follow. Instagram head Adam Mosseri says the app will offer advanced tools to creators, a collaborative draft feature and performance insights for Instagram videos. Instagram will now also allow reels uploads up to three minutes long, which is double the 90 second limit it had previously. Over on X, the social network is rolling out a vertical video tab for US users designed for folks to access videos more directly. X users could already scroll through short videos by tapping on a video on the timeline and then scrolling up, but the new tab is now a dedicated section for these bids. Not to be left out, bluesky also introduced a custom vertical video feed in its app, available through the Explore tab. Users can swipe through trending videos and pin the feed for quick access. In his Power on newsletter over the weekend, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple's upgraded mail app featuring AI powered sorting into categories like primary emails, transactions and promotions will be included in the macOS 15.4 update, with an April target date. The app debuted on iPhone back in December, but is also expected in the upcoming IPADOS 18.4. A handful of major tech companies including Facebook, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Twitch, YouTube and others have signed a new code of conduct under the EU's Digital Services act meant to combat illegal hate speech. The agreement includes commitments to faster review times for reports from users, transparency measures and cooperation with civil society organizations. X is also under renewed investigation by the European Commission for how it handles content, moderation and recommendation algorithms. Oppo's Find N5 foldable phone is expected to launch as the OnePlus Open 2 in the US and is the company's thinnest foldable to date, reportedly close to 4 millimeters when open. That's just a hair thicker than the USB C port itself. Photos and teasers highlight a sleek design and IPX9 waterproofing, which would put it squarely in competition with Samsung and Google foldables already in the market. The Find N5 is set to debut in China first next month. AI powered search engine Perplexity has acquired LinkedIn competitor Read CV. Read CV was founded in 2021 by ex Facebook and Mozilla designer Andy Chung. It also lets users share resumes, network with other members, and create websites with custom domains. This is Perplexity's third acquisition after Carbon and Spell Wise. For more analysis of the tech news of the day, subscribe to dailytechnewsshow.com do it now.
