Are the daily tech headlines for Friday, September 5, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. TikTok announced Friday that it has over 200 million monthly active users in Europe, a significant increase from 175 million users last year. This means approximately one in three European citizens in 32 countries now use the short form video app. Globally, ByteDance owned TikTok boasts over 1 billion monthly users, showcasing its rapid growth, particular among teenagers. Tesla has proposed a new 10 year compensation plan for CEO Elon Musk, potentially worth up to $1 trillion, which ties his pay to increasing the company's valuation to over $8 trillion. If successful, Musk's control would increase to 25%, addressing his past demands for more voting power. Shareholders are scheduled to vote on the proposal, which follows a $29 billion package announced just a month prior. Tesla believes Musk's vision is vital for the company to usher in sustainable abundance and democratizes autonomous goods and services. OpenAI plans to produce its own AI chips next year to reduce reliance on Nvidia and meet growing computing demands. The custom chip was reportedly designed with Broadcom, which recently received a $10 billion order from OpenAI. These chips will be used internally, not for sale. This move follows previous reports of OpenAI exploring proprietary chip development due to GPU shortages. Sam Altman announced these changes after GPT5's aiming to prioritize paid ChatGPT users and double OpenAI's compute fleet. Developing custom chips referred to as XPUs, will help mitigate shortages and save costs and are expected to gain significant AI market share, though Nvidia remains the current leader. OpenAI is preparing to launch an AI powered jobs platform next year, aiming to connect employers with candidates processing AI skills to accelerate the technology's integration across businesses and government. The company will also introduce a new certification program developed with partners like Walmart to train workers in AI utilization on the job, with a goal of certifying 10 million Americans by 2030. Snapchat has launched its Imagine Lens, an open prompt text to image AI generator for Snapchat Platinum and Lens subscribers. This tool allows users to create, edit and share images from their own prompts, marking Snapchat's first open prompt image generation offering. The Imagen lens utilizes a blend of in house and industry leading AI models, potentially including a mobile focused AI text to image research model. This release underscores Snap's ongoing commitment to AI, building on recent advancements like a standalone Lens, studio app and web tool for AR lens creation and the introduction of video generative AI lenses. Google is introducing an update to Circle to Search on Android that significantly improves its translation features. This new scroll and Translate functionality allows allows for continuous translation of on screen content, removing the need to reactivate the feature when scrolling, swiping between screens or switching applications. Google states that the update is currently rolling out starting with select Samsung Galaxy Phone users. Nepal has banned most social media platforms, including Facebook X and YouTube due to their failure to register with the government. While some platforms like TikTok and Viber have registered, many popular platforms have not. The proposed bill aims to regulate social media, but faces criticism from rights groups, groups who fear censorship, while officials contend it's crucial for monitoring content and ensuring accountability. Facebook is trying to bring back the Poke feature, a classic tool for virtually nudging friends. This revival is driven by an increase in its use among younger users. The company has added a dedicated Poke button, redesigned the Poke pages to show poke counts, and will display new icons as poke counts grow. While the poke's exact meaning is open to interpretation, Meta's renewed emphasis on the feature aims to boost Facebook engagement, especially especially among the younger demographic it has struggled to keep. And finally, Microsoft is offering free Microsoft 365 personal to US college students for a year, including Office apps and copilot AI with a 50% discount option after. This offer, separate from education versions is valid until October 31st and includes 1 terabyte of OneDrive storage. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced this alongside other AI educational initiatives like educator grants and free LinkedIn AI courses support national AI educational goals.
