Sarah Lane
These are the daily tech headlines for Wednesday, June 17, 2026. I'm Sarah Lane. Google has released Android 17 and Wear OS 7, putting its latest AI capabilities front and center. New features include Gemini powered video editing, music creation with Lyria, three improved translation tools, a multitasking bubble bar, and support for screen reaction videos. Pixel watches get expanded emergency detection and up to 10% better battery life. After nearly a decade of development, Snap is finally bringing its augmented reality glasses to consumers for for a price, the new specs cost $2,195. Pre orders are open with a $200 refundable deposit and they're expected to ship this fall in the us The UK and France. Should be an interesting test of whether consumers are ready for expensive standalone AR eyewear Beyond today's AI powered smart glasses, Estonia is trying to get ahead of a problem many governments may face later. The country plans to become the first nation to to give AI assistance their own digital ID numbers for better control over what AI agents can access and what actions they're authorized to take on behalf of people and businesses. It's part of a broader effort to address the legal and security challenges of increasingly autonomous AI systems as governments figure out how these tools should operate in the real world. India is temporarily blocking Telegram until June 22, saying that fraudsters have been using the app to sell fake exam papers and and spread misinformation ahead of a retest for the country's largest medical school entrance exam. Telegram CEO Pavel D criticized the move as ineffective and disproportionate, arguing it punishes more than 150 million Indian users while scammers just move to other platforms, raising more questions about how far governments should be going in restricting online services to combat fraud. Microsoft is moving its co pilot cowork coding agent to usage based pricing to to better manage those heavy users who generate massive AI compute costs, Axios reports. The company is also considering a Microsoft hosted version of Deep SEQ or another open source model as a lower cost option alongside models from OpenAI and Anthropic, a sign the company is increasingly embracing a multi model strategy instead of relying on a single AI provider. Uber announced plans to launch a driverless ride service in Houston by mid-2027 using vehicles from Lucid Motors and and self driving technology from Neuro. The move puts Uber in more direct competition with Waymo. But unlike Waymo, Uber isn't building the technology itself, instead betting that it can win by operating the network and fleet while partners provide the cars and autonomous driving systems. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman sources say that Apple is planning a major 2027 product wave that could include camera equipped AirPods, a second gen foldable iPhone, we don't even have the first one yet, and a special iPhone marking the device's 20th annivers. The new AirPods are expected to be Apple's first AI focused wearable, using cameras as sensors to give Siri Visual awareness of the world. Those Apple Smart glasses are still rumored for late next year. Apple also released new firmware updates this week for AirPods Pro 2 and Pro 3. No big announcements other than bug fixes and performance improvements. The UK is denying reports that Prime Minister Keir Starmer sought an exemption from new US Restrictions on Anthropic's most advanced AI models, calling those claims categorically untrue. The controls were imposed after US officials raised concerns that the model's built in safety safeguards could be bypassed. And the dispute has reignited debate across Europe about reliance on American AI technology and the need for greater digital sovereignty. And finally today, scammers in the Netherlands have taken tech support fraud into the real world. Dutch police arrested six suspects, including a 15 year old who allegedly operated a fake bank help desk from an Amsterdam home and sometimes visited victims in person to make those scams seem more legitimate, a tactic authorities say has become increasingly common, especially against elderly people.
