These are the daily tech headlines for Friday, October 10, 2020. I'm Jen Kutter. On Friday, Britain's Competition and Markets Authority, the CMA, published the decision to designate Google as having strategic market status for general search and search advertising services. This does not include the Gemini AI Assistant, but does include other AI functionality like AI overviews, the Strategic Market Status designation does not introduce any immediate requirements, only enables the CMA to enforce greater control on how Google operates in the uk. The CMA will start consulting later this year on possible new rules and regulations that could apply to Google. Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Rishi Sunak is now a senior advisor at Microsoft and Anthropic. The former PM has been instructed by the independent watchdog overseeing activities of former government figures to not lobby UK ministers on behalf of the companies. Sunak said he will be providing Microsoft and Anthropic with high level strategic perspectives on macroeconomic and geopolitical trends. China's State Administration of Market Regulation, the samr, will initiate an investigation of Qualcomm's acquisition of Israeli firm Autotox as a possible anti monopoly violation. Autotox is a fabless semiconductor company specializing in V2X vehicle to everything semiconductors. Qualcomm Inc. Subsidiary Qualcomm Technologies Inc. Completed the acquisition of autotalks on June 5, 2025. China's commerce ministry designated Canadian research company Tech Insights as an unreliable entity, which bars the firm from receiving information from Chinese organizations or individuals. This action follows a Tech Insights report breaking down Huawei's latest AI chips, including components from outside inside mainland China. Microsoft is updating the Copilot app on Windows to enable the creation of documents from a chat session, as well as the option to connect Gmail and Outlook accounts. Copilot will be able to create Word docs, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoints and PDFs from the chat interface, and linking Copilot to Gmail or Outlook will enable searching content within those accounts. The updated Copilot app will be available to Windows Insiders before rolling out to all Windows 11 users, Bloomberg reports Instagram is exploring a dedicated TV app. On Thursday, at the Bloomberg Screen Time conference, Instagram head Adam Masseri said if behavior and the consumption of these platforms is moving to tv, then we need to move to TV too. Mosseri also stressed that there is nothing to announce yet. Bloomberg reports Masseri isn't looking to license any sports or content from Hollywood and that he believes the vertical video content on Instagram can work in a TV format. Meta expanded access to Meta AI translation tools, which can automatically dub and lip sync reels into other languages across Instagram and Facebook. The feature now supports English, Spanish, Hindi and Portuguese, and translated videos will be clearly labeled Translated with Meta AI. Meta AI translations are free for all creators on Instagram and limited to creators with over 1,000 followers on Facebook, but only in countries where Meta AI is available. Music streaming app SoundCloud added some new social discovery features enabling users to see what friends and favorite artists are listening to by listing tracks liked by your crew, and the Liked by Playlists feature pulls together a curated playlist from the likes of friends and favorite artists. SoundCloud also launched a trending track wall with filter options so users can see what's trending across the platform or or just hear the stuff relevant to their interests. The features are available now on the web, iOS and Android, and for the Venn diagram of Apple Vision pro owners and NBA fans. They'll be able to watch select Los Angeles Lakers games this season with a special immersive feed using blackmagic Design's Ursa Cine Immersive Live cameras, which will be set up courtside and under each basket.
