Tech headlines for Thursday, June 12, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. The rydaling aggregation app OBI has published the first in depth examination of Waymo's pricing, revealing that Waymo self driving car rides are consistently more expensive than Uber and Lyft. Yet this doesn't seem to impact demand. The report, shared with TechCru, analyzed nearly 90,000 offer records from Waymo, Lyft's standard offering and UberX, collected between March 25 and April 25 in San Francisco. By comparing ride requests for the same times and routes, OBI found Lyft had the lowest average price of $14.44, followed by Uber at $15.58 and Waymo at $20.43. Prime Video has significantly increased its ad load from 2 to 3.5 minutes per hour to 4 to 6 minutes per hour since its January 2024 launch. Despite Amazon's claims of ad volume, experts confirm a consistent ramp up with more expected in 2025. This surge is likely due to many of Prime Video's 200 million subscribers not frequently using the service, leading to fewer ad impressions. Even with increased ads, Prime Video's ad load is still moderate compared to Netflix and Linear tv, suggesting potential for further increases if viewership isn't impacted. In an effort to re engage its growing Gen Z and Millennial user base, Yahoo is introducing new AI features to Yahoo Mail. These features, including a gamified catch with AI powered summaries and email previews, marked the biggest upgrade to the app in a decade. Yahoo CEO Jim Landzone emphasizes Mail's continued importance as a core product, noting that nearly half of its current users are Gen Z or Millennials. He believes AI will be crucial for simplifying tasks across all Yahoo products, working seamlessly in the background without requiring users to learn new behaviors, and that vintage Yahoo brand will continue to innovate and grow. SAG AFRA has suspended its strike against industry leading game studios with a tentative agreement now awaiting consideration by the organization's national Board. Details of the proposed deal, which may include over 24% wage increases for performers, enhanced health and safety protections, and industry leading AI provisions requiring transparency, consistency and compensation for digital replicas, will be disclosed if the Board approves the terms. This potential agreement aims to build upon three decades of partnership between the interactive entertainment industry and the union. Speaking at the Founders Forum Global Conference in Oxford on Thursday, ARM Holdings PLC CEO Rene Haas aligned himself with other tech leaders like Nvidia Corp. CEO Jensen Huang, stating that US Export controls on China negatively impact consumers and companies and hinder overall technological advancement. Haas emphasized that restricting access to technology forces the development of separate ecosystems, which makes the pie smaller and ultimately is not very good for consumers. He also highlighted ARM's substantial presence in China. Microsoft has launched a new Edge feature called Secure Password Deployment for enterprise users, allowing administrators to securely share encrypted passwords with employees. This feature, available from Microsoft 365 Business Premium E3 and E5 subscriptions, aims to eliminate risky password sharing methods like sticky notes or emails. Admins can deploy, update and revoke credentials via the Microsoft Edge Management service in the Microsoft 365 admin center, with passwords automatically appearing in Edge's work profiles as autofill. These passwords are encrypted using Microsoft Information Protection SDK and linked with entre identities, ensuring secure and compliant credential management while preventing users from viewing, editing or exporting them directly. Snapchat has introduced Lens, a new $8.99 per month subscription tier offering an expanded library of lenses and AR experiences, including exclusive AI powered video and Bitmoji game lenses for both Snapchat and selected creators. This premium tier also incorporates all the benefits of the existing $3.99 per month Snapchat subscription, such as early access to features like chat, wallpapers and Bitmoji backgrounds. Mattel Inc. The company behind popular brands like Barbie and Hot Wheels, has partnered with OpenAI to integrate artificial intelligence into the design and functionality of its toys and products. This collaboration is in its initial stages with the first AI powered product expected to be announced later this year. The integration of AI could lead to the development of digital assistants, Mattel characters, and enhance the interactivity of existing games like Magic 8 Ball and Uno, ultimately aiming to redefine the future of play. And finally, Meta has introduced AI powered video editing tools with over 50 preset prompts to transform videos, and they are free for a limited time. Users can apply themes like video games or anime or change backgrounds and clothing. The tool processes the first 10 seconds of a video and is available via the Meta AI app, the Meta AI website and the Edits app in the US and other countries with future custom text prompts. Planned edited videos can be shared directly to Facebook, Instagram or the Meta AI app's Discover feed. Daily Tech Headlines - Episode Summary Release Date: June 12, 2025
Hosts: Sarah Lane, Robb Dunewood, and Tom Merritt
In this episode of Daily Tech Headlines, hosted by Sarah Lane, Robb Dunewood, and Tom Merritt, listeners are presented with a comprehensive overview of the most significant technology news shaping the landscape on June 12, 2025. The discussion delves into various sectors, including autonomous vehicles, streaming services, artificial intelligence integrations, labor negotiations in the gaming industry, and advancements in cybersecurity and digital tools.
Rob Dunewood kicks off the episode with an in-depth analysis of Waymo's pricing strategy in comparison to its competitors, Uber and Lyft. According to a recent report by the Rydaling aggregation app OBI, Waymo's self-driving car services are priced significantly higher than those of Uber and Lyft.
Despite the premium pricing, the report reveals that demand for Waymo's services remains robust. Dunewood notes, “Waymo's higher prices haven't deterred riders, indicating a strong preference for autonomous vehicle services despite the cost difference” ([02:20]). This resilience in demand suggests that consumers may prioritize the unique offerings of Waymo, such as advanced safety features or superior ride experiences, over cost considerations.
The conversation shifts to Amazon Prime Video, which has significantly ramped up its advertising load since its January 2024 launch. Initially offering 2 to 3.5 minutes of ads per hour, Prime Video has now increased this to 4 to 6 minutes per hour.
The strategic increase in advertisements aims to optimize revenue without significantly impacting user experience, given that Prime Video’s ad placement is still perceived as less intrusive compared to other streaming platforms.
Robb Dunewood highlights Yahoo’s latest initiatives to rejuvenate its Mail application by integrating new Artificial Intelligence (AI) features. This marks the most substantial update to Yahoo Mail in a decade, targeting a younger demographic of Gen Z and Millennials.
Jim Landzone, Yahoo CEO, emphasizes the strategic importance of these updates: “AI will be crucial for simplifying tasks across all Yahoo products, working seamlessly in the background without requiring users to learn new behaviors” ([03:50]). By focusing on unobtrusive AI integrations, Yahoo aims to maintain its relevance and foster innovation within its user base.
The episode covers the latest developments in labor relations within the gaming industry, focusing on the suspension of the SAG AFRA strike against leading game studios. A tentative agreement is now awaiting approval from the organization's national Board.
This agreement, if ratified, aims to solidify the three-decade partnership between the interactive entertainment industry and the union, potentially setting new standards for labor practices in the era of increasing AI integration.
At the Founders Forum Global Conference in Oxford, ARM Holdings PLC CEO Rene Haas voiced concerns alongside other tech leaders like Nvidia Corp. CEO Jensen Huang regarding the impact of US export controls on China.
Haas's statements reflect broader industry concerns about the balance between national security measures and the free flow of technological innovation.
Robb Dunewood reports on Microsoft’s latest feature for its Edge browser, aimed at bolstering security for enterprise users.
This development underscores Microsoft's commitment to providing robust security solutions tailored to the needs of modern enterprises.
In the realm of social media and augmented reality, Robb Dunewood shares news about Snapchat's latest offering.
This premium tier aims to provide users with more personalized and interactive experiences, leveraging AI to enhance creativity and engagement on the platform.
Robb Dunewood highlights a groundbreaking collaboration between Mattel Inc. and OpenAI, signaling a new era in the toy industry.
This partnership aims to redefine play by introducing smart, responsive features that adapt to user interactions, offering a more immersive and engaging experience for children and collectors alike.
Concluding the tech headlines, Robb Dunewood discusses Meta’s introduction of new AI-powered video editing tools.
These tools aim to democratize video content creation, making advanced editing accessible to a broader audience without the need for specialized skills.
Today's episode of Daily Tech Headlines offers a multifaceted look into the evolving tech landscape, from autonomous vehicle economics and streaming service monetization to innovative AI integrations across various platforms.
