Tech Headlines for Tuesday, June 10, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. Waymo, the autonomous ride hailing service, has temporarily halted its downtown Los Angeles operations following protests against immigration raids that resulted in several of its vehicles being set on fire. At least five vehicles were destroyed over the weekend, prompting Waymo to withdraw its fleet from the area while continuing search services in other parts of the city. The company's spokesperson confirmed that they are cooperating with law enforcement regarding the incident. Beginning with macOS 27 subsequent releases will exclusively require Apple Silicon Macs. MacOS Tahoe remains compatible with a limited number of Intel Macs, specifically four models from 2019 and 2020, making it the final macOS version to support intel architecture. Apple will continue to provide security updates for TAHOE until fall 2028, following the standard pattern of one year with major point two years of security only patches. After it's superseded, IBM plans to build an error corrected quantum computer named Starling with enhanced computational capabilities by 2028, aiming for cloud availability in 2029. This machine, consisting of network modules within the new Poughkeepsie New York Data center, seeks to be the first large scale quantum computer with error correction, potentially surpassing competitors like Google, Amazon Web Services, QAERA and SciQuantum. Mark Zuckerberg is assembling a team of experts to pursue Artificial General Intelligence, or AGI, aiming for machines with human level or superior capabilities. This initiative coincides with a reported $10 billion investment in Scale AI and the expected joining of its founder Alexander Wang to the AGI team. The move is partly fueled by Zuckerberg's disappointment with Meta's Llama 4 and the delayed release of their behemoth AI model, and it aligns with similar efforts by competitors like OpenAI to attract further investment for AGI development. Google's AI overviews and other AI powered tools including chatbots, are severely impacting traffic for news publishers, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. With users now getting answers directly from chatbots, often using news content without publishers knowledge, referrals to news sites are plummeting, threatening the sustainability of quality journalism. While Google claims its AI overviews boost search traffic, this doesn't extend to publishers who are seeing significant declines exemplified by the New York Times experiencing a drop in organic search traff. Consequently, publishers are exploring new business models including content sharing deals with AI companies. To mitigate this threat, Uber and Wave are set to conduct an initial trial of fully autonomous vehicles in London, the first of its kind. The collaboration aims to establish commercial roll wheel taxi services in the UK and internationally. While a manufacturing partner was not disclosed, details regarding the car company and trial schedule are expected in the near future. This initiative aligns with the UK government's newly announced Expedited Framework, which permits commercial self driving pilots to commence in spring 2026. Apple's Wallet app is set for a major upgrade in iOS 26, specifically catering to travelers. Users will be able to store digital password versions for identity verification and utilize enhanced boarding passes with terminal map links for navigation and integrated Find my support to track airtag luggage at baggage claim. While digital passports are not a replacement for physical documents, they offer increased convenience and utility within specific apps and participating TSA checkpoints, potentially aiding those needing to obtain a real id. Tencent Music Entertainment Group is set to acquire Chinese podcasting startup Zimalaya Inc. For $1.3 billion in cash and stock, a move aimed at establishing Tencent as China's equivalent to Spotify. This acquisition involves Tencent issuing shares to Zimalaya's founders and backers, as initially reported by Bloomberg News. With a potential valuation of over $2 billion, Zimal it boasts 303 million monthly active users as of 2023 and has support from major companies like Tencent, Baidu and Sony had previously attempted a Hong Kong IPO in 2021, but postponed its plans. And finally will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes of the Smartless Podcast are launching Smartless Mobile, offering affordable wireless plans starting at $15 to $30 per month for up to 30 gigabytes of data per month using T Mobile's network. Aimed at saving users money by avoiding typical unlimited plan overpric, they claim bills could be cut in half for some customers. This venture emerged organically for the trio following Smartless Podcast success chosen over less authentic commercial opportunities. Dunwood reports that Apple is set to require Apple Silicon Macs exclusively for macOS 27 and future releases. The current version, macOS Tahoe, will be the last to support select Intel-based Macs from 2019 and 2020.
Rob Dunwood: "macOS Tahoe remains compatible with four specific Intel models, marking the end of an era for Intel architecture in Apple's operating system."
Apple assures users that security updates for Tahoe will continue until fall 2028, adhering to their standard policy of one year for major updates and two additional years for security patches.

Mark Zuckerberg is intensifying Meta's efforts to develop AGI, assembling a specialized team and committing substantial resources to achieve machine intelligence that rivals or exceeds human capabilities. This initiative includes a significant $10 billion investment in Scale AI and the recruitment of its founder, Alexander Wang.
Rob Dunwood: "Zuckerberg's dissatisfaction with Meta's current AI models like Llama 4 is driving this aggressive push towards AGI, aligning with industry trends set by competitors like OpenAI."
The move reflects a broader industry shift towards achieving more sophisticated and autonomous AI systems, emphasizing the competitive landscape in AI research and development.

Google's integration of AI tools, including chatbots, is significantly affecting traditional news publishers. According to a Wall Street Journal report, these AI services provide answers directly to users, often utilizing news content without proper attribution, leading to a decline in traffic to news sites.
Rob Dunwood: "While Google asserts that AI overviews enhance search traffic, publishers like the New York Times are experiencing substantial drops in organic visits."
This trend threatens the financial viability of quality journalism, prompting publishers to explore alternative business models, such as content-sharing agreements with AI companies, to sustain their operations.
