Yeah, a lot happened this weekend and for me what I is still is still echoing in in my head and the images that are still bouncing around was Friday night I made sure that I was in front of that television at 7 o' clock to watch the Bulls summer league debut of their number four overall pick in this draft, Caleb Wilson. And let me tell you what

they might have one here. They the this guy and all I could think of watching him score 36 points and an easy 36 points including 7 of 11 from 3 point range which is the one thing that he was expected going to take a lot of work and yeah, it still is. Let me get the caveats out of the way here.

All right.

Let me just, let me, let me inoculate against counter argument. It's summer league. It's one game. Summer league is glorified pickup ball. It really is. They're they're not really running stuff based on personnel on the floor. That's a very, very basic offense. They're all running basic NBA stuff. A little bit of the double high trying for the corner threes. You know what they're running. And you've got some guys who are going to be G League players. You got some guys are going to be NBA players. Some teams have veterans, some teams don't. But all that said, he hadn't played a game in five months. Caleb Wilson hadn't played a competitive basketball game in five months. And one thing you can see, regardless of the level of competition, is a level of his personal competition, that motor. You saw the motor. And he talked about the motivation. He talked about the fact he knew he was going up against Cameron Boozer. And what I've always said about Cameron Boozer is I am certain he's going to be good. He is. And probably very good and maybe one of the very good for a long time. I like Cameron Boozer as a player, but the reason I liked Caleb Wilson more for the Bulls was upside of what he. He could be. He's blessed with some very, very special athletic traits. And I figured it's going to, it's going to take a while before this guy can shoot the confidence with which he shot the basketball early and then very, very late in the game when the Bulls were scrapping to get back into it late, and he was taking really difficult contested threes because they had to, and he was knocking him down and everybody knew he was shooting his. They, they might, they might have a guy. They might have a legit guy. If this is what we're seeing now already, he could go out and lay an egg in the next game. And you know, I know that. So don't, don't respond to this in bad faith. I trust you now. I trust you to you. You know that I know enough about pro basketball to understand the, the meaning in the data of one summer league game. But also sometimes there are things you can see that say, oh, oh, oh, did you see the blocked shot when his hand was above the white square? The number of times he's got to duck his, his head out of the way so he doesn't smash his entire cabeza into the backboard? I mean, those, those traits are there. I can also see why at North Carolina, if you have a guy who's so good on the interior, why you wouldn't have him necessarily dancing around shooting threes. But in the NBA, different story, different animal. He hadn't played in five months and he had 36, which they're not sure whether or not it's the all time record for a Vegas summer league debut or any summer league debut? And I don't really care. I just kept saying to myself, that guy's on the Bulls. Because how many times do you watch something like that or how many times do you watch whatever it might be, a preseason game, a regular season game, and some other team has a dude doing stuff like that? And you say you have. The Bulls ever have a guy like that? It's years since they've had a lot of good players, but one of those guys and the opinions after that game, some of the outlandish, exaggerated takes of, oh, maybe, maybe this guy's better than DebonSA, maybe that they got the guy in this draft, I'm not ready to say that. But just the fact that it's reasonable to even float something like that, that you don't get laughed out of everything for saying something like that is a pretty good start. That he was competitive and verbally fiery and playing hard, feeling everything like this was he, it meant something to him. And I, I couldn't believe it after the fact. And then, you know, I thought about it. He said after the game. And I'm reading this in the Athletic, he said, I cried before I played today. And it was, what, 35 points, five boards, three blocks. They lost by one. Even though he hit those two ridiculous threes late to keep it close, he said, it's been five months to the day since the last time I played, and I've just been really emotional because I haven't been able to play. I felt terrible because my team lost in the tournament and my coach got fired. It was a lot for me at that point. So coming out today, it just felt like I've been waiting so long for this opportunity. His decision making, his aggressiveness, that idea that every single time he touched the ball, it wasn't just like, oh, I have the ball. I'm going to move it over here now and kind of get into the flow. Every time he had the ball, even when he didn't have, he was trying to do something that there, there was a, a basketball act to be done. There was something to be achieved. The, there was always some kind of purpose to his movement. So more, more, more, more, more of this, please. And I also think that we found the actor who plays him in the movie when, when they make the, the Caleb Wilson story. Do you see it?

He's a really good actor. Not. Well, he could probably play him. Yes, but no. Daniel Kaluuya won the Academy Award for best Actor for his portrayal Fred Hampton in 007. I don't know about 007, but Daniel Craig. Yes. Judas and the Black Messiah. He played Fred Hampton.

Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.

And won the Oscar for best actor.

He also is the the other lieutenant in Black Panther.

Yeah, I do. I, I see it too. So that's, he can, he can pencil that in for when they decide when, when Holly sides. This isn't just a sports story anymore. Damn it. We have had one summer league game and we've optioned the movie rights. Is that because we're already jumping to that. And, and if you're, if you're Daniel Kaluuya's agent, make that call. See if you can set that up.

A couple other observations. D. Swain has a long way to go, but he's slithery as a ball handler. And if they want him to at least do some secondary ball handling, run the point in a pinch depending on the matchup when he comes in, be the Josh Giddy backup and my guess is eventual replacement, it's it. You don't have to be any kind of. Of, of fortune teller to see that. When you start looking at where contracts are and what, how much the Tiago Splitter cares about defense and how much Bryson Graham cares about defense. It wouldn't surprise me if they are looking at Dalen Swain and his potential as the long term fit for being a, a primary ball handler. But there's a lot of work that needs to be done. There's a lot that has to go on. But these are, these are really exciting times when you think you've got a guy who may be. When you describe the guy, I don't know if it goes quite there. I just know that I was, I was thrilled and delighted when, and it's always a good sign in our house when people are asking what's all the noise down there? What's all that noise down there coming from that room? And why are you yelling and running around? Well, I was because Caleb Wilson in his first game in, in almost half a year was the best player on the floor. And you know, Noah Senge four blocks. I liked how these, some of the defensive instincts. My worry though, because I thought he was building up weight and they said he'd added weight along with height now that he's 611. Just I'm concerned about the width of his shoulders and how much weight he's going to be able to carry, whether or not his frame is going to accept more muscle. I mean he can, he can, he's going to get stronger. He has to get stronger because he keeps getting pushed out of the way. But he's just got those tiny little shoulders Especially in comparison to some of the guys he was guarding. And he doesn't, I don't know that he's got the, the, the width that's going to make the most out of it. But there's, there's plenty of time for the Bulls right now. The expectations are low. If they win 30 games, it's probably about right. I don't think they're going to be fighting for any playoff position unless, unless this kid really is as special as he could be. And there will be ups and downs. But this is. If you haven't bought Caleb Wilson stock yet. I think there were a lot of people around the league that sat up and took notice because you know these, there's a lot of people attend these games now, especially in Vegas. Maybe some players or NBA folks who happen to be in Vegas. But there's no secret now. And that's what we saw, that. That's why those of us who wanted Boozer to go before the Bulls had to make that decision. This is why. That's why, that's why I thought he's a better fit. Because the, there's special, special traits there.

[Maddie]

Very good job. To sailing Caleb Wilson. And never one saying Caleb Williams. Even though I said Caleb Williams in my brain. Pretty much every time that you said

Caleb Wilson, I will say Caleb Williams. I'm sure Stan did it. Do you hear that? Stan Van Gundy.

No. Did he really? Yeah.

I think the very first time in the game he called the real guy or your pillow the real guy. I should have brought the pillow downstairs with me to watch with me because I, I just should have taken a picture saying we're ready for the game because. And I turned it on and it was on prime and like, it's Stan.

[Maddie]

Yeah. I'm surprised you don't have that like in a Baby Bjorn and just around your house.

[Dan Bernstein]

Too big.

[Maddie]

You could make one of your.

No, I can't throw my back out that. It's, it's life size. I can't carry that around with me. It'd be like a fireman's carry. Did you see me carrying it out of the building?

I did not.

No. And onto the elevator.

Yes. Any looks, any odd looks at all?

Yeah, of course they were odd looks. Like, why does that man have a Stan Van Gundy body pillow? And they had. None of your damn business. Yeah, I have one because I wanted one. And it was gifted to me by a listener named Tim and I. It's, it's, it's one of the greatest presents I'VE ever received.

[Maddie]

Well, I think you should. Every time you watch anything to do with basketball, whether it's summer league, regular season games, I don't know if there's a inside the NBA show that you enjoy. You should always have the pillow at your side.

[Dan Bernstein]

Or I'm thinking this. I know the Bulls can't get the actual Stan Van Gundy to be Stacy King's replacement to, to be the color commentator for Bulls basketball. The pillow's available if you want. I, I could sit behind it and, and like use a periscope to look over his shoulder and you could kind of have that. But I'm still, we're still waiting to see what's going to happen there.

[Maddie]

You know, we haven't, we haven't discussed this on, on the podcast, but I think, I think we're both in agreement that it would be a good season of transition to maybe bring in a bunch of people, a different people all the time.

[Dan Bernstein]

Yeah, we talked about it.

[Maddie]

Transition, apart from.

[Dan Bernstein]

Yes, we talked on OWC about it a little bit. And I, I think it's unfair. If you just hire somebody and say this person is now Stacy King's replacement. That's it. Unfair to that person.

[Maddie]

I agree. 100.

I think now if you are going to ask Adam Amin to work with different partners, he can do it because he's, he's a consummate professional. It does ask a lot of him. You're going to have to have a conversation because that's, that's difficult. It's really tough to go through a whole season with multiple partners. And if you remember Stacy King, was it at least one year where he was the third man. You had Johnny Kerr, who is still there and still the primary guy. And then it was more of Stacy and more of Stacy and then they'd fold him in a little bit and he would do a couple games on his own and then eventually he was ready to take it over. I think you could do that this year. I think you could go with Will Purdue, you could go with Kendall. There's any number of people and then some guests if you want to bring in, Jamal Crawford if you want to have. But he's not going to give up, you know, a full time. I don't know if he has a, does he have a full time local gig as well as the national?

[Maddie]

Not that I'm aware of.

[Dan Bernstein]

Because if he doesn't, that would, if he wants to do this. Because it's, it's, that's a life that you choose. If you are going to be a, the local analyst, you know, and, but

[Maddie]

to your point though, about, about asking that extra lift for Adam Amin. And I agree with you that it would be extra and there would be more to it. But I also think in this season of transition as well, the, the, like the idea, because you've mentioned a lot how last year at the end Stacy and Adam were like doing a podcast or a show and there just happened to be the game going on around it, but that was the backdrop to it. Not that you would ignore this season, but the development of this season could also be used as a backdrop at times if guests came through. So yes, while there would be extra asked of Adam and you would need to have that conversation, it wouldn't be straight. Man, you got to carry these games because every second of every game is so valuable and important to what this season means. This team, this is a development type thing as well.

The stakes are lower this year.

[Maddie]

Yes.

[Dan Bernstein]

And when the stakes are lower, it's a perfect time to you, you're blessed with the opportunity to do this more slowly than you otherwise would. And I think that's okay.

[Maddie]

Yeah. And I think that would be something to look at and talk about as well. If you were to bring in a series of guests to come through and say, hey Adam, this is what it's going to look like. But you can be more casual and have a couple cup of coffee and, and just sit there and have a conversation with someone while the game's in the backdrop as well.

And then, and then you'll know by the end of the season probably where you're headed there even into it with an idea of, of, of who your prospects are. Yeah, you, I don't, I just don't think there's a name out there that you could name that person and Bull's going to be like, yeah, okay, let's go. Fine. And, and the, the comparisons to Stacy will be there. Unless, you know, if Jamal Crawford were to want that job, you think he's

a, he's a plug in guy.

He might be.

Yeah. No, I, I, I don't disagree with that. But I, I do agree 100% that it's unfair to name most anybody else.

And say you're the guy, that you're the gal, you're the guy that's going to replace Stacy. Go ahead and you know, move forward. I, I don't, I would not envy anyone in that position.

Where Hedayet Turco glue and Giannis Antetokounmpo. If we got to write Rob Manfred cards somehow, how if I know it's Rock Chalowski and it's been talked about all year. As soon as the White Sox got that pick, we started hearing about Rock Chalowski, the shortstop from UCLA and then the commissioner of baseball. This guy's whole life, his whole professional life, everything's been building toward this day. And his highlight that he's going to have for the rest of his life is ruined because the commissioner didn't respect him enough to pronounce his name properly. That's all your job is, is to pronounce a name properly. And that just sucked. But it seems like now, as we got closer to the draft, it seemed like that there was more of a question as to whether or not he was going to be number one. And of course, the White Sox say was number one the whole time. Some question as to whether or not his swing needs to be reconstituted or re. Edited, whatever they have to do. And what the upside is that. And when you saw Dansby Swanson comp in there, that'd be a hell of a pick. That'd be a great pick. If somebody is a Dansby Swanson level, it doesn't mean you're a Hall of Famer, but it means you're a really good major leaguer on really good teams. Yeah, that'd be awesome. I don't know. I don't. The. Anybody who claims to know a lot about the MLB draft has to be one of a handful of people whose job it is. That's just a fact that even somebody, even people hosting the panels. Who was it on MLB? It was what, Mark DeRosa and Harold Reynolds?

They have no idea. They don't study the draft. There are a handful of draft experts who are qualified, who know who these high school players are, who've watched all the college ball. It is a really, really specific niche of sports knowledge that you simply turn over to those people just like you do when the Olympics come around and it's time for discus and you need your discus people to come out and tell you all about this sport. This is its own thing. So we're any opinion that you read is going off of one of these professional draft nicks opinions so we can rehash all of that. I To me, the most important numbers are here. Whether you are a Cubs fan, a Sox fan, whatever you may be, the most important numbers are this. Every year there are approximately 150,000 draft eligible players. And that includes, you know, our children who play and they're technically draft eligible. They count in that the number that the high schools are disgorging every year there were 613 players drafted and if we're being generous, maybe 75 to 100 will ever play in the big leagues and 100 out of 613, that's probably a lot will ever, ever, ever have a single stat in the big leagues. Of those 115 to 30, you know, call it 22 or whatever it might be, will be full time major league players. That doesn't even mean necessarily good full time major league players, but good enough to hold down a full time job in MLB. 22 out of 150,000 every year. That's how hard it is. That's it. And this is the most uncertain perhaps of all the drafts because of the number of different things that you can do and the number of ways a pitcher can throw the ball, number of positions a position player can play and that kind of flexibility. So that's what were those are the numbers that you're looking at here. Did you also see, I don't know if you saw any of these low lights when MLB's television portion of the draft was over and it went to their online cast where they kept the set and the backdrop and everything. They just change out where it was being went from a broadcast to a webcast. They were striking the set behind him. The lights were coming down, the people coming out. All you heard was crashing and banging. They're pulling down the curtains and the lights and all of the stanchions and we're just workmen back there taking it all. Like you couldn't figure that out. You couldn't tell them, hey, that nobody can hear our webcast because you're banging everything around and packing everything up. I just thought that was absolutely bizarre. But hey man, MLB is going to mlb. And then there's also all these questions about signability and is there going to be a lockout? Yes, there's going to be a lockout. How much it's going to matter? Do we know? No, I don't really. I do know that I found the quote, my absolute 100% favorite quote, that came out of the draft. So I'm going to ask you, is, is this person lying, which is very possible, or do we have a lot of work to do here? Because there's something that is fairly scary as part of this. I just, I was just dying at this. Chris Getz was so effusive in his praise for Rock Chalowski that he said the following. And this is from ESPN's reporting. We've had people that have met Rock Chillowski and felt so comfortable with him, they didn't even need to watch him play. That's how high character and impressive this human being is. This is Sox general manager Chris Getz, a number one overall pick. Rock Chalowski. We've had people, meaning presumably people within their organization. On the baseball drafting and development side, we've had people that have met Rock Chalowski and felt so comfortable with him, they didn't even need to watch him play. Okay, that better be a lie. I know you're excited. I know you get into the moment and you're trying to tell us that it's hyperbole. Trying to explain what an awesome guy Rock Chillowski is. If you had not person people in your building that met him and then said they didn't need to see him play, those people should be fired immediately. Get them out of the building. I'm glad I watched both quarterfinal soccer games that were on over the weekend. The ones that I got to take in. What was it Saturday when I. Yes, it was Saturday where I watched a lot. We had the 4 o' clock start. That was Norway and England. I thought that game kind of sucked. I thought there was. There's just kind of a lot of ebb and flow and very little attacking. And then the one time Norway has a two on one, no passy and whoever that schmuck is doesn't pass it to Holland. What are you doing? Aren't you so I don't know soccer all that well, but if I have One of the great goal scorers on the planet. Don't I want the ball on his foot, right in front of the goal. Am I crazy?

But he's not because he, he talked last night. So he's, he's there and Lindsey Graham.

Yeah, I think he talked and he said he, he fell at home.

But he did get up. He hit his life alert, and he's, he's, he took a picture with his wife because apparently his wife had left town and people didn't know why she was gone and why it's been a month and how that's all been, but I guess he's recovering from a fall. Lindsey Graham is not recovering.

And I just want to put together, there's, there's some quotes here that Craig Calcatera did a nice job of compiling, as he so often does. And Lindsey Graham, who spent a lifetime working against the rights of LGBTQ people, trying to make their lives more difficult. And I'm just very interested to hear what comes out in the aftermath here. For somebody who made it a, a life goal to keep LGBTQ people from enjoying the same freedoms as others, to love who they want, to marry who they want, it was something that he, he always had a problem with that. I'm going to be very interested to hear some of what we learn in the aftermath here, more importantly, to talk about what we know about an American politician that Lindsey Graham called in the, in the run up in the immediate aftermath of the 2016 election. Lindsey Graham, and I think correctly called Donald Trump a race baiting, xenophobic bigot, called him the Islamic State's man of the year, called him the death of the GOP's relationship with Hispanic voters, a death blow to the GOP's relationship with women, the world's biggest jackass, a wrecking ball, a salesman of fear, a politician whose ideas are gibberish, a politician who is incapable of representing a mattress company, a poor representation of a Republican and a president who is unfit for office, a demagogue and a race baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot. Lindsey Graham knew what he was supporting. He knew what he was enabling. And all that mattered to him was his own power. That's it. So all those things that he knew and expressed took a back seat. That tells you what you need to know about somebody. It tells you about the complete absence of personal principle. And that desire for power can turn somebody who thinks those things into a slavering lick spittle and doing everything that was in his power to promote destructive and mean policy. So we did check the US Reserves of piss for graves. We've got it. We do have some. Ever since what we said about Hulk Hogan just to make sure that the U.S. strategic reserves are full. And indeed they are. And some of that indeed should be spent on Lindsey Graham. There was a fun story this weekend too, in another place. I have long warned against getting too close to wild animals of any kind. I know you saw this story and, and understanding that, that wild animals can be. I like to think of it as a bad matchup. Usually it's really easy for me to blame the victim when somebody at a zoo or at a park, at a nature preserve does something stupid like walking up to a grizzly bear. Like, you remember the guy that's, that said he was the bear whisperer and he would go, and he'd go to Alaska and he would try to befriend the bears and he, he knew them by name. And it was all great until one day they ate him. And I should not have looked at those pictures, but I did. It's, it's. They, they didn't leave much and he must have been quite tasty because the bear is just like, oh, it's that guy. You want to eat him? Yeah, let's eat him. And they did this. This was not the case at Yellowstone. But I would say on the list of bad matchups, a bull bison in at the very start of mating season. Keep your distance. And that has been learned by a grandfather named Carl Isom McDaniel. The video is everywhere, and you absolutely have to see it. You've got to see the video, because when they say he was thrown 10ft into the air, no lie. No lie. And I don't really think he did anything wrong. I think that he was at a. Sometimes it's just not your day. Now, I know that the definition of a reasonable distance from an angry bison is a sliding scale because it can close and change that distance in the blink of an eye.

Yeah. To me, a safe distance requires binoculars.

Okay, that's a safe distance. Or a helicopter.

I give this guy a lot of credit because even though he broke multiple bones and was in a lot of pain, he was still joking about it. So he's a retiree in his mid-60s. He was visiting Yellowstone from Kendall, Washington, and he didn't really do anything. But according to reports, the animal that was likely full of testosterone at the beginning of mating season, he's this. This bull had already menaced several groups of visitors, including a small group of teenage boys who quickly scattered when the bison charged. See, teenage boys, they're small, they're quick. And when they scatter, then this one, he doesn't know what to do, so he scared off the teens. And then, as you'll see in the video, the bison took a moment to. To lie down. And even when he's lying down, it's still intimidatingly enormous. And it was lying down right near a picnic table. There was a campground road nearby that was. And he said there were all sorts of dinner leftovers around. And apparently when he got up, the bison said he was kicking like a rodeo horse who's very agitated. Then a pickup drives by, and McDaniel and his grandson are taking pictures of the bison from a distance. And the bison looked at them. He sat up, and the grandfather understood that the bison looking at them is probably a bad sign. And then the bison charged, and there's a little stand of trees there, and the bison goes into the trees. Now, how do you know that the bison is in the trees? Because the trees are Shaking as if they are mere pieces of parsley. And like, actual whole trees are moving all of a sudden. Where's the bison? Oh, in there. Then the bison shoots out and the. The grandson runs away. Granddad, not so much. He gets the. The left horn hooked on him and then chucks him 10ft in the air. So he. The. The cameraman who was filming decided, I'm gonna go help. Because you're always asking that. Well, why aren't you? Why aren't you helping that dude? Because there isn't much he can.

Well, yeah, he's not going to stop the bison.

Or draw his attention and have the bison run at him, right? I mean, I guess you could throw yourself out in front of that to save that guy, but you could.

It's not like he's got a flashbang grenade or a tranquilizer dart or. I mean, there's nothing he can really do if all he has is the camera. Somebody did. He put the camera down. He ran at the bison, and he was trying to be distracting and. And then other park visitors actually helped. And the bison eventually fled the scene before the ambulance showed up and could get grandpa out of the hospital. The ambulance took only 10 minutes. 9.

I mean, nothing stupid happens to the bison, right? Because the bison was just doing what a bison does.

No, I don't think that they would immediately say, well, this bison needs to be euthanized because he's angry and full of testiles. Mating season, Right. The problem is that, that their mating season does coincide with when the tourists are all over there in the middle of summer. And not to mention the fact that we have taken away all the funding for the national parks to barely keep them open. So I don't know that we have people helping out and, or warning certain areas. The staffing is there to help. People say, hey, there's a particularly angry one around here. You maybe want to steer more clear than you otherwise would. So it's all good. He seems to be okay. I'm going to go with a bet that combines Argentina winning with Messi scoring a goal. That bet is plus 330. And I looked at that a couple times, and I said, those are pretty good odds for that bet because the game itself at the moment is a pick them. You don't have a favorite between England and Argentina, but I'm going to take Argentina. I thought they did a nice job. I thought Switzerland did a nice job marking. Messi almost playing would look like kind of like a little matchup zone that whoever was in his area happened to stick to him.
