Mattie
Dan Bernstein Unfiltered is brought to you in partnership with my bookie. So I came to work today and I looked out the window looking to the south from where we are in Prudential. And you've seen it when you see the establishment shots of Bears games, you see the famous Prudential building. And I can look out. And we wanted to see if in fact our fair Lions in front of the Art Institute were behelmeted. And I couldn't quite see, but I don't. I don't think so. I don't think they are yet. There is a Twitter account or an X account, Art Institute Lions, and that account has not announced that the helmets have gone on. So I've been thinking about this because you remember Mattie, we had a listener. There was somebody in the comments who had mentioned that as part of one of his jobs, he had been in the storage room of the Art Institute and had seen those helmets that began in 1985. By the way, that is a direct connection to the 85 bears that he saw them just sort of waiting there in the storage room. So I tried to figure out when. So do you know when the last time it was is that the, that the helmets were put on there?
Dan Bernstein
I would hope it would have been 07 when they were in the Super Bowl.
Mattie
It was the NFC championship in 2011. I have a news story from January 21st of 2011. And they have taken off the holiday garlands and they had put on the helmets. And. And in this article From January of 2011, it says the last time the Lions wore Bears uniforms and helmets was 07 when the team was last in the Super Bowl. They had Cubs hats in 84, socks, helmets in 05. And in 2010 they had Blackhawks helmets for their first Stanley cup nothing in 16. It's in this are again. This article is from 2011.
Dan Bernstein
Okay.
Mattie
Oh, so I'm just, I'm just reading this, but as far as the Bears go, I. My guess is one more win before the helmets come out.
Dan Bernstein
Well, they should be on already.
Mattie
Do you think so with it?
Dan Bernstein
Yes.
Mattie
Okay. So this, this is my, my point for the day and I was thinking.
Dan Bernstein
About this and they're hosting two playoff games.
Mattie
A lot of this has to do with. I've been in my feelings a little bit since you sent me that AI thing last night.
Dan Bernstein
How cool was that?
Mattie
It's unbelievable. Can you. I just want to make sure we get the name of that. That director. And even though my gut feeling is to say that AI is bad, because I think it is. But in the hands of an actual artist who's. Who's not evil, there are some really interesting and creative things. I think Mark Morgan. Mark Morgan is the filmmaker.
Dan Bernstein
So it's like a documentary style.
Mattie
Yes.
Dan Bernstein
Using AI about the comeback. And so it shoots 50 years ahead of time. So these people would have been in their 20s.
Mattie
Mm.
Dan Bernstein
And they were talking about the comeback game. And it's really. Dude, I tell you, I got a little teary eyed when the couple was like, I was out with my friends, he was out with his friends. We saw each other. The final, you know, whistle went off, we kissed. And we've been together for the last 48 years.
Mattie
And it shows these elderly, fun couples and friends and people sharing the memories of what it was like. What did they say? Eight Super Bowls later, eight champions.
Dan Bernstein
Ben Johnson brought us eight Super Bowls. Oh, and then the woman, associated elderly woman. And she was like, I was watching the game with my dad and they won. He tossed me in the air. And she's crying cause her dad's no longer with her. Yeah. I was like, this is really well done.
Mattie
Yeah. And how about the two old guys joking about the foam cheese grater? He's like, well, I had one of those hats that they made at the time.
Dan Bernstein
My brother right here bought me one. I worked for 40 years.
Mattie
Yeah. Then he's like, bear, bear down. And so I agree with you that against my better judgment, I was watching that. I'm standing in the middle of the kitchen like, fine. What is this? Like, oh. And it got me.
Dan Bernstein
It sure did.
Mattie
It got me. Like, maybe because I'm kind of soft right now. I'm a little vulnerable when it comes to getting in my bears feelings, but it definitely got me. And I will. I'll add that to the list of, you know, AI in good hands can do fun things. Just like, what's. What's going on with Neural viz right now? Which I think is. Is just the best thing going right now. If you haven't checked out the account N E U R A L V I Z on YouTube, it's. It's incredible. And I've been. I've watched every video in that series and going through the whole universe and everything that they've done. And I just, like I say in good hand with smart, creative, fun, nice people that it can be really cool. So I've been thinking about it. I thought about the lions, like, okay, well, let's let's get the helmets on our damn Lions already. And I thought, well, no, this is just the divisional playoffs. Just the. It doesn't feel like just the right now. It feels much bigger than that because it's been so long. So here's what I want. What I was picturing in the spirit of that video, I was picturing 10 years from now, and it's following the custodians or the workmen whose job it is to put the helmets on the Lions and take the helmets off the Lions as part of whatever their regular jobs are around the Art Institute. Right. But this is one of their jobs. And it's the same guys or same people. Doesn't have to be guys. The same people whose job it is. And what I want is for it to be the year, you know, 2039 or whatever it is. And I'm like, oh, didn't we just take these off? Like, they're going into the storeroom and they're pulling the tarps off of them or whatever covers them up, or unlocking them from big Rubbermaid containers or whatever it is, or piecing them together, whatever they have to do. And it's like, I thought we just sort of like the way you might feel about your Christmas lights or the way you feel about whatever ornaments, the way you may decorate your own home. Yeah. And, you know, we're not big home decorators. And occasionally, the way our marking points are, I'll buy a couple little pumpkins and I'll put them on the stairs, and then the squirrels get them, and then the pumpkins deflect and they become like these sad, demented little pumpkin pancakes. And I scrape. They're frozen, so I have to scrape them off with the shovel and carry them to the garbage. So that's sort of an annual thing.
Dan Bernstein
You take a bite on the way to the garbage or.
Mattie
No, but it's that feeling. It's that feeling of, didn't. Are we doing this again? That's what I want. I want it to be like, oh, look at this. We're going to take pictures in front of this. I want it to be boring. I wanted the. I want it to be old hat. I want it to be so mundane and so routine that it's just something. I guess. I guess I got to put the helmets back on. I want it. I want it to be on the people whose job it is. I want them annoyed.
Dan Bernstein
I want them to have to do it. Yeah. More frequently. Yeah. I kind of picture the, like, the government warehouse at the end Of Raiders of the lost Ark. And there's, like, all these crates, and they bought a. Use a forklift to get it off, and they got to take a crowbar.
Mattie
No, no, it's not that. No, no, no, no. It's row six now. We. They moved them.
Dan Bernstein
They should be right at the front.
Mattie
Yeah, exactly. Like, it's the kind of thing where it's just something that you do. It becomes a rite of winter. Let's go put the helmets on the Lions. The Bears are in the NFC championship again. That's what I want. So there. As far as I can tell, they're not there yet. And my guess is one more win and we will have the moment and they will be there. So it's. It's just one of these little arbitrary things that I think would be nice if this became habitual. And we all get sick of winning Super Bowls. We all get sick of super bowl party. The Bears are there again. They got new wide receivers and new running backs. I know, I know, but the Bears are there again.
Dan Bernstein
You know, I think another. Another angle you could take with. With that, if someone's very creative with AI, you could actually bring the Lions to life, like, after hours and have them talk about having to wear the Bears helmets all the time and how they're embarrassed and they don't like it. And it's like, come on, man, like, I'm the king of the jungle. Like, I gotta wear heavy football helmets. Like, yeah, it hurts my head. My ear hurts. Like, I'm having hearing issues now to my right ear. It's bothering me.
Mattie
Or you get one lion who's just very sort of vain and wants, like, the cool face mask.
Dan Bernstein
We still got a visor.
Mattie
Yeah, we got these 85 face masks on here. Like, they need Tony Medlin or, like, the lion version of Tony Medlin, this tiny little lion who comes running up there and with the screwdrivers and takes the face mask off and puts the cool one on there.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, Puts a nice visor on it.
Mattie
Right. Or they got the big neck roll thing on there. Yeah, they just. They just want to. They want to swag it out a little bit. Or they do, like, the Jalen Hurts face paint thing. Or they've got the Roma Dunes, a Afro sticking out from the ear holes.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. Or we could. We could get you all in your feelings. Gonna make you cry and have it like, one lion, like, handing the job of being the lion out front to his son and talking about how, you know, honor it is to wear the Bears helmets and Passing the job on to his. To his young son who's taking Fasa.
Mattie
Right. Or we have the mandrill hold up the lion with the bear's helmet on.
Dan Bernstein
There we go.
Mattie
Yeah, it's okay. It's all right. Speaking by the end of the show, by the way, another place. And again, maybe I'm just feeling a little like this today because I want to do a report on a show that I'm watching a little bit later on in the show. In all serious, though seriousness, though, the Bears run game has to get better by Sunday evening. It has to. It has to. It has to. And I've been thinking about it because of the responsibilities that they're going to have specifically against this defense and missing the left tackle, how this is going to all play out. And some. Some of these thoughts are maybe a little jumbled right now, but I want to start by listening to Ben Johnson's admission yesterday of what is not happening currently with the Bears run game.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, he was asked about the. The run game the last few weeks.
Guest Analyst
It feels like it's dipped a little bit. Not something that we certainly want. Certainly late in the season we wanted that to pick up playoffs weather games like this, you certainly want to be able to lean on your run game. So those are some elements we're looking at. What can we do to help ignite that? It's both efficient runs to stay on track and ahead of the chains and also explosive runs as well. Where can we find a few of those? I'll say this. We got a really tough opponent in that regard. I think they do a really good job. I think the front is their strength. These guys at the line of scrimmage are really good football players. I think they shed blocks at an elite level. I think they are relentless. I think they're violent really across the board. So I have. I have a lot of respect for them. And we're going to have to be on our A game to be able to run it on this crew.
Mattie
Fair enough. You don't have your starting left tackle. As far as we know, it's going to be Theo Benedict. Unless they're holding back a secret regarding Braxton Jones. And I think we'll find out more throughout the week. But if it's going to be benedet, they have found creative ways to provide help on that side. Whether or not it's simply sliding a protection in that direction, whether it has been using a tight end or an H back. When I say H back, that's hybrid. That means a tight End who you will often see motion into a fullback position, hand on the ground. Durham Smythe does it often, and you will see them do that. Where we should talk to our football people, too, about this, and I look forward to doing that. Certainly on forward progress, where we're. Where we get a little nerdier with some of this stuff. But the way Ben Johnson uses help to be a weapon and not just a defense. Ben Johnson never wants to go defensive with his offense. Offense is always attacking. It's never just, all right, let's go max protect and create a little cocoon here as much as we can for the quarterback. And we're going to have two receivers in patterns. There may be a time and a place for that, but you can't default to that because then you're already on your heels. What Johnson will do is when he uses a tight end, when he uses an H back, when he'll have the fullback come out and motion to that side or motion back to that side. Sometimes there is a block, there is help, there is an awareness of who's doing what. Do they have an eight technique, a wide nine technique coming at us from. From a sharp angle? So they'll then get that guy in a pattern if things are running right. Whoever is helping is also immediately establishing himself then as a weapon. In the past game, it isn't just going over to. To Theo Benedict or Ozzie Trappilla or whoever it is and saying, hey, I'm here. Don't worry about me. It's, I'm gonna help you here if this guy's this way. But the moment I give that guy a chip, I'm out in a pattern. And Johnson's not gonna wait. He's not gonna keep guys in who could otherwise be in patterns. And this is especially if it's Benedict. I'm really interested to see do they want to like the. The stuff that we got from Tim Jenkins regarding Waggle, actually, what do you say? Waggle country was the play that he wanted to see with that, that country post, waggle out to his side, throw back to the other, that that's a perfect time to move that out to the right.
Dan Bernstein
No, you're not. You're not wrong about that. And I think one thing that happened on that game against the packers, which was interesting, and I'm sure the Rams are taking aware of it, and Caleb has done this all season long, but his ability to roll out either right or left and throw the ball accurately has been. Has been pretty good. That play that he put on Film the Jumpman logo throwing, you know, on 4th and 8, moving to the other side. That's going to have to cause edge rushers to take a pause because you can't, you can't attack Caleb Williams directly.
Mattie
Right. Well, you. He's also. He's made that very. And to hear defenders talk about him, it's been all season that they say if you go right at him without breaking down a little bit, he's done. He's gone. Yeah, he's gone. He's got the backspin, he's got the jump cut. He's got everything you need. So there's. There's. That's already in the back of their head. I think it was Aiden Hutchinson who was talking about it and I heard him say it. He said that there's sometimes if you're making a beeline right to him, he's in charge, not you.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. And that's where being able to be effective with play action is going to be very helpful. And if you're, if you're already causing those edge rushers to slow just a step because of what Caleb's going to do, where his body's going to move him, and then you're looking at that handoff and if he does again and he's gotten better at it and showing and then pulling back and concealing it, and then having that, that chip blocker come off for release, that should be wide open. You should have those opportunities to do that. And one thing that was also interesting about the packers game, too, and why they weren't very effective in running between tackles, which we've talked about now the last couple days, if you notice they have their linebackers shooting the gaps immediately. If they, if they thought run, they shot the gap, which really made it difficult for the Bears to get to that second level because the second level was coming into the backfield pretty quickly. And, you know, and the Bears do a lot of double teams. They double team and then they release and they double team again or they'll double team, release and move forward. They weren't able to do that in a good rhythm. And we heard Drew Dahlman talk about it the other day where he said that the run game, the schemes were just off and we just weren't running our schemes properly. It's because of what the packers were doing really well. And you notice, go back and watch that game, you'll see linebackers shooting gaps all the time. And now you're coming up against a 3, 4 in the Rams where they're going to be over those gaps. So I'm curious to see, and I'm really excited to see this chess match of what Ben Johnson's going to develop and use in his run game to kind of counter that because the packers really took it to him and really slowed down their effective run game between the tackles, which is really a big part of what Kyle Menungai does well.
Mattie
Well, the one natural counter, especially when we consider that the Rams defense is a 30 front, which means you've got three down linemen. You have a two gapping nose tackle in Ford where you want your typical 350 pounder type who's going to be head up on the center, who's going to handle both A gaps. And then you've got your five techniques who are lined up essentially right up over the tackles who are generally tackle sized guys who are playing that five technique. And then the linebackers will flow. So sometimes you get looks that are similar, but a two gap is you are responsible for the side to your left and to your right rather than in a 40 front typical like Lovey Smith Matt Eberfluss defense where you're used to guys just trying to get in between and get up field. Right. My, as I understand it, if The Bears use 13 personnel, which we've seen a lot, and that is in no particular order commit Loveland and Smythe.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, he's actually open games up in 13.
Mattie
Yes, I think we'll see more of it and we're going to talk to our football people for the next couple of days and ask these questions. But if you do that, you're creating discipline questions for the linebackers because the four guys who are in that second level have to account for run and pass for all of these guys in a heavy package rather than just sort of saying, all right, here's, here's these wide outs, here's these slot guys, the guys behind us are handling this. You're going to make life difficult for communication purposes when it comes to those four linebackers when you're in heavy personnel. And I, I'm just trying to think too now they're saying it's going to be 5 degrees, not 10, and the winds could be up to 25 miles an hour. If we got, you know, wind whistling through their ear holes and everything else going on and that kind of chaos. It may be more stressful on a defense for them to be in 13 at least on first and second down.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, and especially what we saw in that game against the packers where they showed 13 at the, at the two point conversion and then spread out. The Bears have that weapon in Colson Loveland where he has a receiver. So instead of just having one wide receiver out there in a 13 package, in a heavy package, you have an extra tight end wide receiver in Loveland who's going to create even further mismatches for whatever linebacker is out there trying to cover him.
Mattie
And I want to say too, if you're just joining us, and if you're just like, hey, I want to find some Bear stuff and I found Dan Bernstein unfiltered, I don't want to get too jargony when we say 13 personnel. When you hear that, when you hear 11, 12, 13, all that is is two digits. The first one is the number of running backs and the second one is the number of tight ends. And then the wide receivers will be the difference between that and five. Because if you have five offensive linemen, you know, tackle, guard, center, guard, tackle, and a quarterback, that's six. So as far as skill position players, that define your offensive packages, that is where we say blank personnel. So 11 personnel is one running back, one tight end and three wide outs. Yep. Which you see all the time.
Dan Bernstein
12. Well, two. 13 will have one.
Mattie
Yep. So 13 personnel, one running back, three tight ends and one wide out.
Dan Bernstein
Yep.
Mattie
So this is the way to it just it's. And remember R comes before T, just alphabetically. So that's how. That's the good way to remember that. When you say 12 personnel, one running back, two tight ends. That's all it is. It's R and it's T. Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
And then of course, again, a big advantage the Bears have in Colson Loveland being one of those tight ends.
Mattie
Correct. Because he can do wide receiver stuff. And I will say Smythe moves. Okay.
Dan Bernstein
He does.
Mattie
He.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, he does for sure.
Mattie
As a third guy, you know, I don't want to have to rely on him. I don't want to count on him on a fourth and three and be throwing him the ball because that's not why he's here. But hey, if it's, if it's second and two and you want to take there for you.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, he's, he's reliable. He has, he has decent hands. He can run a route. Heck, even a Theo Benedict can run a route. One other kind. I want to play for you. Except he fell down at the end of it. I think he's like your offensive tackle guy from Oregon.
Mattie
He tried. Before we get to this other piece of tape, let me mention that there's no reason to bet these playoffs anywhere but my bookie, because my bookie gives you absolutely everything you need to get paid. This may be. For some people, this is their favorite weekend of the NFL year. Some people love wild card weekend. Some people think that the divisional playoffs gives us the actual best density of entertainment. And you can make it even more fun if you've got the parlays going or if you've got multiple looks at multiple games. College football is down to the final two, and we're in the middle of NBA college basketball. My bookie is built for it. It's the same account, same wallet, Sports casino, reloads, live bets, everything you need is all in one place. So what you're going to do is you're going to go to MyBookie AG right now and enter our promo code, DBU. That stands for Dan Bernstein unfiltered. And then your first bet's covered up to 500 bucks, because if the bet doesn't hit, you have what's called the bet back bonus token. And then you can run it back. It's like it didn't happen. So with that in mind, with that little insurance there, go ahead and build a bankroll in January, ride it through the super bowl, and bet anything, anytime, anywhere, only with my bookie. All right, so what you got?
Dan Bernstein
All right, well, a couple of things real quick before I get to this. Jalen Johnson. Cut. I just saw. I just saw this guy on Twitter, Olin Kreutz. Want to give out a big congratulations to Olin, our old buddy. He just got into the College Football hall of Fame. Was announced that he's going into the College Football hall of Fame, so.
Mattie
Good for him.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. Congratulations, Olin. One of the. One of the. One of the best, man. I mean, just, you know, our introduction story is a classic one, and he's just. He is an absolutely sweetheart of a guy. I mean, a great guy.
Mattie
Yeah. Yours is a great guy. Yeah. I always say about Olin that. It wasn't official. Bears training camp didn't start until he threatened to kill me. Usually it was in the bathroom at Donlin's, and he's like, this. This year, this year, I am going to fucking kill you. Like, okay, I'm ready. I'm here. I'm ready. And he gave me a look, and I. That's. Then. Then Bears season could begin.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, he's just.
Mattie
He's.
Dan Bernstein
He's the best. All right, so Jalen Johnson, he met with the media yesterday, and there's one. One comment I wanted to pull out and it's, it give us, it gave us a little insight to give me a little insight into what was happening. We talked about this last week with Herb Howard about Tyreek Stevenson. Jalen Johnson got benched for a half, and then Tyreek Stevens came in. Johnson was asked about it. I'm 100% healthy. I don't, I don't understand it. So when, when talking about his playing time yesterday with the media, he was asked about getting, gaining more confidence as the game went on in this packers game. And here's what Johnson had to say.
Mattie
I mean, I was at game on confidence. My confidence doesn't waver. Just continue to get comfortable throughout a game. Catch a rhythm.
Dan Bernstein
That's all I've been asking for.
Mattie
And I mean, that's, that comes with time and opportunity.
Dan Bernstein
So one little thing, it just kind of gives us a little insight. One little thing he said there. He said, that's all I've been asking for. That's all I've been asking for. So we hear the conversation right there. He just let us in what the conversations were with he and his coaching staff, why he was pulled out, why he was benched. They were, they were trying to build him up slowly, get him back into return because they know they need him if they're going to go far. And all he wants is what opportunities and time. That's what I need.
Mattie
This is not easy. It's not easy thing to handle because it's really hard.
Dan Bernstein
It's really hard because it goes to the whole question of, all right, is an 80% healthy and good to go Jalen Johnson, is it really that much better than a 100% healthy Tyreek Stephenson, you know, and an equal playing field. Jalen Johnson, it's not even close. He's the best player on the team, defensively speaking, but he's not quite there yet. And even it was, was it Tim Jenkins the other day who said, I need somebody who can run full speed. Like, can you run full speed? Like, I know Tyreek can run full speed and Tyreek can go one on one really well. That's what he does well. That's what he's been known for. That's what he did well in college. And he started the season off playing really well, like he was starting every game, Dan. And we never spoke about Tyreek Stephenson.
Mattie
There was a play late in the packers game on which Jalen Johnson made a really good play, was a slant that he knocked away.
Dan Bernstein
Yes, it was a great play.
Mattie
It was a great play, but he made it with his brain more than he made it with his feet. And the answer to this question is an 80%. Jalen Johnson can, in theory be better than 100% replacement level substitute if he's. If he doesn't make a single mental mistake. Like the margin for error is such, where every step has to be in phase, Every step has to be in a way that mirrors the guy he's covering and he needs to anticipate. That's playbook stuff. You've got to know where the guy is going first of all. It also puts more responsibility on his ability to jam a receiver and prevent a clean release off the line. If you can win at the line of scrimmage pressed up there, you're going to have a much better job making up for your lack of makeup speed. Because that's what I saw more with Jalen Johnson than anything else was. If he gives up a step, if somebody gets an angle on him, he doesn't have that acceleration just yet to close after the ball is in the air. Unless he could wake up Sunday morning and be like, hey, oh, it's back. I'm not taking that. It is possible that they're ramping him up just right, and the Bears know exactly what they're doing. And when this comes around, all of a sudden he's like, oh, yeah, by the way, this. This Death Star is fully operational. And nobody knew that would be pretty cool. I can't count on that. And that's why during warmups, you've got to be honest. You got to be talking with the trainers. The trainers have to be honest with the coaches. And if he says, Look, I'm an 8 out of 10 when it comes to this, then you let everybody make the decision, right?
Dan Bernstein
And I think. I think he'll play and he'll play every snap if he's able to do that. I just think that will require some adjustment, what they're going to do on certain looks that the Rams might show, where you might have Kevin Byard leaning towards that side so he doesn't get that. That one step beat, and then he's. He's gone for a touchdown. Maybe Byard's there helping. And then of course, you know, McVeigh will know how to counter that, and he'll draw a look that maybe pulls Bayard to one side. And then you go back and, yeah, you go after. After Johnson if he does get beat. But I think he knows his body best and he knows that I just need to be out there and get into a rhythm, get into, you know, a playing groove. And hopefully, hopefully that, that does come back fully because he does have three games to go. So he's got, he's got this weekend, he's got NFC championship game and he's got super bowl. And hopefully by the super bowl rolls around, he's back to a 10 out of 10.
Mattie
Know your body best. Make sure you get your rest right so your game gets better and you know all the rest.
Dan Bernstein
Bears on four.
Mattie
There it is. 1, 2, 3, 4. Bears go.
Dan Bernstein
That's five.
Mattie
Oh, shoot. On three. We're going on three. The protein is the word. Right now. Everybody's looking for more protein. And everywhere you look, even, you know, you go get your coffee, say, do you want protein? Or you going and you get your hair done and say, would you like extra protein with your haircut?
Dan Bernstein
I like to throw a steak in my coffee.
Mattie
Hey, man, what, whatever it is. And I understand why. A lot of this is because of GLP1s and because the number of people on GLP1s, it's really important to get this kind of protein. Protein keeps you full longer and it's healthier for you than filling up on the fast burning stuff that you can put in your fuel tank. And rather than using like a powder, I got an idea for you. Like you just mentioned. How about a steak? How about a chicken breast? How about a delicious center cut pork chop? How about a burger? That is ground brisket and short rib. There is a breaking news story right now that involves a familiar name that is going to be huge in the, in the world of basketball. This story is. Let me just get to this. I am reading this from NBC News. Federal prosecutors secured indictments against 20 people accused of rigging college basketball games in America and pro hoops contest in China, according to court papers unsealed this morning in Philadelphia. The suspects face a slew of charges that include alleged bribery in sports, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud and aiding and abetting. The suspects include several former college basketball players. Alberto Loriano, Arlondo Arnold, Simeon Cottle, Kevin Cross, Bradley Ezwero, Shawn Fulcher, Carlos Hart, Marquis Hastings said Cuevius Hunter, Umar Koresi, Deshawn Nelson, Damond Robinson, Kamian Schell, Diquion Short, Ariane Simmons and Jalen Terry. Not Dalen Terry, Jalen Terry. Trainers Jalen Smith, not the Bulls, Jalen Smith and Roderick Winkler. And what are referred to as high stakes sports gamblers Marvis Fairley and Shane Hennan were named in the indictments. This began in September 2022 defendants first started to bribe players in the Chinese Basketball association for point shaving. Now this name is going to be familiar. Fairley and Henin initially targeted Antonio Blakeney, who was not named in this indictment, who was playing for the Jiangsu Dragons of the Chinese Basketball Association. Blakeney, who played for LSU and the Bulls for three seasons, quote, agreed to participate in the scheme and then recruited other players. So they have some specific stuff regarding what his teams did and then how this scheme then went along to NCAA games. And after they profited on the fixed Chinese Basketball association games fairly, Hennon and Blakeney allegedly turned their attention to fixing NCAA men's basketball games. They're accused of recruiting players who would help ensure their team failed to cover the spread of the flood first half of a game or the entire game. The fixers would place wagers on the games through sportsbooks, betting against the team whose player players has had a bribe to engage the point shaving scheme. And the payments range from 10,000 to $30,000 per game. So there will obviously be more on this, but I'm finding out the. It's clear that to some extent Blakeney cut a deal. It looks like they started with him. They, they, they caught him red handed and then it looks like they, they ran the playbook and flipped him and probably had him wearing wires to get everybody else. But Antonio Blakeney was a bull from 2017 through 2019 and was up and down with the Windy City Bulls throughout much of that time. And he was a guy who shot it every time he touched it, which I always had respect for. Seriously. I know if you're, if you're a borderline guy, just like last night, like what happened last night where sometimes sensible.
Dan Bernstein
Dude, dude, like 30 points in nine.
Mattie
Minutes, 25 points, 24 points in nine minutes. It was the best performance off the bench in a quarter by an NBA player in 30 years.
Guest Analyst
Wow.
Mattie
But I just want to say keep an eye on it. This is breaking and we do have a former Chicago Bull who is square in the basketball news right now and not for good reasons. I'm sure you're going to hear more about this as time goes by and we'll see how long how far the tentacles of this particular scheme reach. But for everyone, they find it means there's probably more out there that are, are going on. And I know the NBA is incredibly sensitive to this as well they should be. So I imagine that Blakeney probably was smart if indeed he took an early deal and began cooperating to turn everybody else in on this one.
Dan Bernstein
He's a rat.
Mattie
He's a rat.
Dan Bernstein
In youth basketball, we call those guys basketball black holes. Yeah.
Mattie
Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
But ball gets to them and just disappears.
Mattie
Yeah, but as long as they're good.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. I mean, we're talking youth, so.
Mattie
I know, but usually how many. How many guys on a youth team can really put it in the basket? One or two. Right.
Dan Bernstein
Generally. That's really great.
Mattie
Yeah. Can really get by their guy and put it in the basket. Yeah. And everybody else kind of runs around. It's not like you guys are running complicated stuff, right?
Dan Bernstein
It's not complicated, but they. They run a smaller scale of what.
Mattie
The high school does.
Dan Bernstein
That's why it's the feeder.
Mattie
Feeder program. I know. Really? Yeah. It's.
Dan Bernstein
It's cool and annoying all at the same time.
Mattie
Yeah, it's great. Until that coach leaves for a different job, and then the next coach is like, who taught you guys? We don't run any of this stuff.
Dan Bernstein
You know what I learned yesterday on our Libertyville's high school program? One of the. I don't think it's the offensive coordinator was Caleb Williams, offense coordinator when he was in, like, high school. 9th, 10th grade.
Mattie
That's cool.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. I just learned that yesterday. One of the coaches and I were chatting and reach out to him, see if we can maybe. Maybe talk to him. I was looking through his Twitter and stuff. It's pretty interesting things he's got out there.
Mattie
I bet. Let me also give props to. If you sat through that entire Bulls game last night, more power to you. I mean, the Bryce Sensibaugh experience was great, but that was a. That was a boiling bum festival last night. 70 some points at halftime, dude.
Dan Bernstein
Like, Jes.
Mattie
Think about this Bulls team is when they realize the other team isn't guarding, it's really hard to get them to also guard. Because. Because I kept saying, you know, if the Bulls just played defense in this game, they could win it by 25.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Mattie
And they kind of half tried here and there, but it was. It was just, if you like that kind of ball, if you like a glorious bum festival, it was that. And the Bulls hung on to win thanks to the second best pass of the season was the first one.
Dan Bernstein
The giddy to Vuk in the corner. Okay.
Mattie
It was giddy to vouch in the corner to beat Philadelphia. That was the best pass of the season. That was giddy leaning out from underneath the basket. He had done the giddy thing where he drives in and kind of leaps in the air with no plan and then makes up a plan. Before he lands. And that's when he reached out beyond the end line and whipped a perfect left handed pass to Vuch, who made the ridiculous high arcing three to win.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, he had his Go Go Gadget arms out and extended out 10ft.
Guest Analyst
Yeah.
Mattie
And in this game it was Trey Jones again. Trey Jones falling out of bounds on one foot, trying to get his balance on one foot and like almost traveled, but he didn't travel. And before falling out of bounds, threw a perfect pass again to Vuch, whose man left him. And Vuch turned toward the basket, screamed and put his hands in the air. And I don't know how he found him, but he threw a strange Reich right there right into his hands. And Vuch lays it in for the difference in the game. It was, I guess an entertaining enough game because, because Bryce Sensibov was just hilarious. And even the one I thought was a heat check at the start of, of of the second quarter, I'm like, oh no. Oh my God, he hit it again. And the confidence of some of these guys. You remember Bryce Sensibov from Ohio State. And in this league, it's, every other team has got guys who are, who can come off the bench and just be really, really, really good. Young, young, young, dynamic players. And then you look at the draft picks that they've got in Utah, this idea of, you know, caring about draft capital and having picks so they can get more really good players. The Bulls won the game, but they'd be smart to start thinking about the old tankaroony right here. This is, you might.
Dan Bernstein
Well, they, they, they better, they better make a move or two at the deadline.
Mattie
They, everybody. If you want to hear more about this, the new episode of Organizations Win Championships just came out yesterday afternoon and we've had to move that because of, of Jason's class schedule. We've had to move that to Wednesdays now. But basically we're sort of resigned to the idea of if you can get picks, whether it's IO, whatever's left of Kobe. He was awful last move. Whoever, whoever you especially near the end of the game was just useless out there. But if his calves are good enough to get him moved. Vuchevic, Herder, anybody where you can do something and then get yourself one of these guys coming out this year. Because this draft also is just loaded. I would love to make sure that, that they do that. Nice win by the Bulls. Fun game, but I think the overall trajectory might be kind of, kind of set here. I just, I, I hope, I hope, I hope I hope some.
Dan Bernstein
They're not going to make any trades and they're.
Mattie
Jason said we have a bad.
Dan Bernstein
They're not going to. And they're going to compete for the ninth or 10th spot, and they're going to be the playing team, and I'm going to sit down and watch and it's going to be over at halftime, and then we'll be done for the Bull season, so. Well, I don't think they'll make any moves.
Mattie
I hope that's not the case. I. We have a standing bet right now. I bet the Bulls will because they've made some decent deals.
Dan Bernstein
You probably shouldn't make bets because you already own. You already owe me a steak dinner. Boom.
Mattie
What's that for?
Dan Bernstein
From the Bears Halftime bet we made when I said the Bears are going to win. Yeah.
Mattie
I do owe you a steak, don't I?
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, steak dinner. Boom.
Mattie
You do. I do?
Dan Bernstein
Yes, you do.
Mattie
I hadn't really thought of that, but, yeah, I guess I do.
Dan Bernstein
You're writing checks your body can't cash young men.
Mattie
My body can't cash any checks.
Dan Bernstein
No, it's zero.
Mattie
No, no, it's done.
Dan Bernstein
Sorry. I'm sorry. This check is blank. Oh, you fill it in. No, no, the numbers are blank. Oh, yeah. That's the best I got, kid.
Mattie
Oh, sorry. Can't do anything. I can put commas. I just can't put zeros.
Dan Bernstein
Can I share one thing real quick with you before you get into your final stuff?
Mattie
Of course.
Dan Bernstein
I saw this on fan graphs, and it is the combined payrolls by division. Combined baseball payrolls by division.
Mattie
Okay. It seems somewhat arbitrary, but okay.
Dan Bernstein
Kind of. But the numbers are interesting. Obviously, the biggest one. You can guess what has the largest payroll.
Mattie
I would say it's the Al East.
Dan Bernstein
They're at 1.034 billion.
Mattie
Okay, so that's all Dodgers, right?
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. The NL east is second at 989 million.
Mattie
The NLE says, because. Okay. Because the Mets. All right.
Dan Bernstein
The Al east is right behind them at 986 million.
Mattie
Okay.
Dan Bernstein
The Al west at 838 million. Then you're going to take a little bit of a dip to get to the NL Central at 680 million. So it's a million, 150 million.
Mattie
Off.
Dan Bernstein
Off pace from the AL West. From the NL Central at 680 million. You drop down to the AL Central at 573 million. Combined payroll. The NL west again is at 1.034 billion. The AL Central, 573 million.
Mattie
You know what we may Have. Then we may have a way to actually do relegation. You know, maybe finally we could do relegation and promotion and just drop a team down to the AL Central.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, God, that's good.
Mattie
And just keep. We can have an enormous.
Dan Bernstein
So the winner of the AL Central gets out of the AL Central?
Mattie
Yes. You could graduate from the AL Central and be promoted out of it.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, my God, though. But I mean, 989 million, 986 million, 838 million, 680 million is quite the drop. And then 573 million.
Mattie
That's why. But that's like a different league.
Dan Bernstein
Yes, it is.
Mattie
That's criminal.
Dan Bernstein
It is criminal.
Mattie
That is criminal. That is criminal that you would have teams like, oh, well, we'll just compete with each other down here.
Dan Bernstein
Right. How are you competing with anybody else?
Mattie
That's amazing. God. Well, when we don't. Royals have at least decided to move their fences in.
Dan Bernstein
I mean, one. One is almost double. Two other ones are nearly double. I mean, the Al west spends, you know, 260 million more. How do you compete? How do you compete at a combined payroll of 573 million?
Mattie
I don't know. Not as well would be the answer.
Dan Bernstein
How do you compete? Not as well.
Mattie
Well, good.
Dan Bernstein
Good luck. Good luck to you, sir. Thank you. Appreciate that.
Mattie
It's certainly less expensive to do business there. That's really important.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. Isn't it crazy?
Mattie
Wow. Where'd you find that?
Dan Bernstein
Fan graphs. I saw it on an X. Formerly known as Twitter. It's now called X. Did you know they changed the name to X?
Mattie
I did.
Dan Bernstein
Okay.
Mattie
So I had been. I. Last night I finished episode four of Heated Rivalry.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, you did? Okay. Still not done yet.
Mattie
Have you seen the whole thing yet?
Dan Bernstein
I haven't watched one yet.
Mattie
Okay. Okay.
Dan Bernstein
We've been on other things.
Mattie
So after two episodes, I said, all right, this is really good. I like this. This is a good television show. And after the third episode, things started to get interesting in a different way. After episode four, I was a wreck. I was in tears. I do not want to give anything away, but all I can tell you is when we're done with forward progress today, I'm going right home and I'm watching episode five. And is it five or six I gotta do?
Dan Bernstein
You're gonna finish it, so you'll finish it off. Is Beth still watching with you or are you watching alone?
Mattie
Yes, she was watching with me for this. This is her. She's been through the entire episode series now five times. She has read both books and she's she's abs. It's like her whole personality. Her whole personality right now is heated rivalry. She knows everything about every actor. She's watched all of the appearances that. That Connor Story and these other people have done on the. All the talk shows. And like, she's in these special chat groups about it. And she's go. She and a group of people are going to the Hawks game Pride Night. Is it two weeks from now. They're all. They all got a huge block of seats in the 300 level. And there. It's like the whole heated rivalry. Group of people are going to Pride Night just because they're so into it. I was. It's. This episode was so awesome.
Dan Bernstein
February 2nd here.
Mattie
February 2nd. Yeah. I think I may go too, because it sounds like they got really good seats, like in. In the. Like the second row, the 300 level, like behind.
Dan Bernstein
I don't think they have a seat for you, Dan. Sorry.
Mattie
Oh, there's. It's a huge block of seats. I can get a seat, but I'm the cr. The group sounds. I would want to go just to hang out with this group just because it sounds like it's going to be an absolute blast. But I'm having so much fun with this series. It's so good. And Connor Story's acting is absolutely out of this world. Just. Just the job that he. You. Apparently, when he was on set, they did have some. For the scenes in Russia, they had some Russians there who didn't believe because he would. He would keep his accent. When he would speak English, he would keep his Russian accent in between takes and they would speak Russian to him and he. He would say, like, look, I really don't speak Russian. And they didn't believe him because he had to. He was taking Russian lessons four hours a day and he was learning the language for his lines and he kept the accent, but he. He doesn't really speak the language right. But nobody there. The actual Russian people didn't believe that he didn't speak Russian. It's amazing. And he's just a kid from Texas, so it's so much fun. It's so much fun. I can't wait to go home and watch the rest of it today. And I'm definitely going to do that one other thing before we are done for the day. I have a present for you. And I'm gonna have to. So I'll have to. Maybe we'll just have to do this this way. Okay. Here's your present. See that?
Dan Bernstein
It's a fortune cookie.
Mattie
It is. Yes, it is. You've properly identified a fortune cookie. If you're listening, you're not watching on YouTube. I'm holding up a wrapped. And I just want you to confirm that this fortune cookie is unopened. You can see when I squeeze it that air.
Dan Bernstein
It's unopened. Yes, that's correct.
Mattie
Okay. And I want you to watch me do this. So you know, I'm not inserting anything in here. I'm just gonna take you through. Here's what we're gonna do. I'm gonna show you my fortune cookie from yesterday. It's half of it. Cause you have to eat. You have to eat some for the fortune to come true. I ordered Chinese yesterday. I was super hungry. I couldn't decide between pizza and Chinese. And I had a craving for. I didn't order from my usual place because I wanted crispy duck. And they don't have crispy duck. So I ordered from number one chop suey right around the corner. And I got crispy duck and I got some veggie fried rice. And their duck is just to die for it. So good. And they give you that little side bit of the. Of the sweet little plum hoisin sauce. So I open the fortune cookie and I eat a little bit and I take the fortune out. Right now the fortune isn't really all that important as far as. Here's what the fortune said. Okay. It says a small insight can flip everything.
Dan Bernstein
Yep.
Mattie
That is.
Dan Bernstein
That is accurate. That is correct. I can verify that's what it says.
Mattie
But when you flip the fortune, here's what you get. An ad for Amazon Prime. Oh, yeah, Beast Games. It's a billboard.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, it is.
Mattie
It's a billboard and it's. It's Amazon Prime. New season Beast Games. Huh? All right.
Dan Bernstein
I never thought I'd see that.
Mattie
I didn't eat. So they.
Dan Bernstein
Monopoly, they monetized fortune cookies.
Mattie
Now, okay, here was my emotional roller coaster here. My first thought was anger. End stage capitalism. And I'm like, this is it. It's finally happened. I can't just enjoy a fortune cookie anymore without being advertised to. That is all I am. Even in this. I'm trying to cap off a delicious meal. And here I am.
Dan Bernstein
And I'm.
Mattie
And I've. And I'm all. And I'm subject to advertising. Even on the back of this fortune. This is little fun thing that we still have in our lives. And this, on this, I have to be somehow a subject of advertising. And then I got over that real quick and I Thought my next thought was, this is really fucking cool. And I wish I thought of it for all these years. This is inventory. For all these years. You had a blank piece of paper here. It doesn't cost anything. You've got immediate attention. Everybody is going to read it. It's. It's. It. It's the. This company that decided to do this. What company is this written on here? Yeah, this company is Winfar Foods, based out of Chicago. They're on West 45th Street. Windfar Foods.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. It's a great idea. I mean, it's a brilliant idea.
Mattie
Brilliant idea.
Dan Bernstein
Yep.
Mattie
And they. And they sold it to Amazon Prime. Like, this is not, you know, some guy down the street just putting the name of his. Of his cousin's bar on here. Like, they had a salesperson make a presentation and say, here's where you can advertise. So this has gotta be a pretty big deal for them. And I just. I wish I would have thought of it.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, me too.
Mattie
So. So now this is your fortune cookie, Mattie. Okay. This is. And it was your birthday yesterday. Yes, it was. So I like to think that a fortune that is connected to your birthday is more meaningful. I don't know if there's anything in. In Chinese lore that suggests that I'm making it up. I'm saying in the way I think it should be more important, even if it's not. So we're going to open this and we're going to read it.
Dan Bernstein
All right. You're going to eat some for me, too?
Mattie
No, I'm going to. I'm going to save. It's going to say here. It's not going to go. It's a fortune cook.
Dan Bernstein
It's fortunate to be Fine.
Mattie
All right, so I'm going to open this, and this is going to be. And maybe do you want to tie it to the Bears future or no?
Dan Bernstein
Well, let's see. Open it up and see. Let's see.
Mattie
No, you got to decide first if it has any.
Dan Bernstein
No, because I already know the Bears fortune.
Mattie
Okay.
Dan Bernstein
Bears are winning the super bowl this year.
Mattie
Tampa Bay going to Super Bowl. Yep. All right, so it's open. Indeed. Yours.
Dan Bernstein
Was it. Oh, was it still the Amit. The Amazon?
Mattie
Yep. Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
Okay, so they got Amazon everything. All right.
Mattie
Okay. Yeah, my finger's all messed up. Oh, your fortune. I'll hold it up first. Just so you know I'm not lying. It says, strength is already on your side. Use it. There you go.
Dan Bernstein
All right.
Mattie
Okay. Strength is already on my side. Strength is already on your Side. Use it. So I'm going to set this. I'm going to set this done here. I'm not going to put it on the board because I don't want to get in trouble. So I'm. I'm gonna set it over here. I don't need Vic yelling at me.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, keep it away from that turntable too.
Guest Analyst
Yeah.
Mattie
Cause Vic's gonna come and go. We've got a rule in here at this company about fortune cookies getting anywhere near that turntable.
Dan Bernstein
Gonna move the turntable to the kitchen. See how he reacts.
Mattie
That's a thousand. A multi thousand dollar turnkill. What is it doing in here?
Dan Bernstein
Well, if it's gone one day, don't ask me. I didn't sell it.
Mattie
Nope. I didn't either. Nope. None of that. That doesn't happen around here. Hey, the football playoffs are here and my bookie bets into bankroll. Everybody's betting and the NFL is NFL ing all around us. This is win or go home or do or die. However you want to put it. That's what it is.
Dan Bernstein
You almost gave me a grow home.
Mattie
A grow.
Dan Bernstein
All right. Dr. Steven Brule.
Mattie
They keep stuffing the drumstraw back.
Dan Bernstein
Grow home. Grow. Grow home. Who was the first big time grambler? He was a hunger.
Mattie
He said, let's grab that. If there was ever a time to get in the game or grambling, it's right now. My bookie makes it easy to play one account, one wallet. You bet the spread live, bet the second half, hit the casino during commercials. It's all in one place. And you have the power, Matty. When you have the power, it's on your side. Use it.
Dan Bernstein
Use it.
Mattie
Right? Yes. Use it. By going to MyBookie AG use the code that I'm giving you. Even more power dbu. That power gives you the bet back bonus token. Which means your first bet is covered up to 500 bucks. If it doesn't hit, you got that bet back bonus token. So don't just watch the playoffs. Make them pay with my bookie. Bet anything, anywhere, anytime. Only at MyBookie.
Dan Bernstein
Hey. So tomorrow on DBU we will have our weekly. On Friday DBU picks. If you have not started an account yet with my bookie, do it today. Get some money in there. Okay? Because I'm going to give you. I'm going to give you gag. Make a deposit. I'm going to give you the four games for this weekend divisional round action. A four team play that will be successful. Telling you I've had. I've had my team of researchers have been on this all week. I am, I'm going to avenge what happened to me last weekend with the divisional round winner. So that'll be the committee.
Mattie
Because the committee's busy putting something else together right now.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, no, that's a. That's a different group of people. I have crack researchers and they research.
Mattie
Mike, can they research my crack, please? Yes.
Dan Bernstein
They'll be over at your house when they're done here. They're here in the basement.
Mattie
Okay. Please have. Yeah, it needs a ton of research.
Dan Bernstein
They're doing it all.
Mattie
I've said that they have to have miners helmets on and then do research in.
Dan Bernstein
My committee is currently. The committee is currently working on our top 10 list for tomorrow for DBU, which is the top 10 Rams of all time, tops of all time.
Mattie
I begun my work. I'm going to do more. Usually my, my Thursdays involves. I'm gonna, I'm gonna do that and then I'm gonna go home and watch the rest of heated rivalry. But my afternoon is planned because I am gonna be handling that for my top 10 and excited also. Tomorrow is. Is Friday feedback Friday.
Dan Bernstein
Yes, it is. It's already Friday. We're already there. We're just, we're three days away from. From kickoff, buddy. We're getting there. We're getting there and we got the, the early game. So 5:30 game.
Mattie
So it's.
Dan Bernstein
Well, not the early game but an earlier than.
Mattie
It's an earlier game than it would otherwise.
Dan Bernstein
An earlier game. Thank you. So we'll have our post game show around 8:30 and you know, make sure you come celebrate with us on forward progress the Bears victory over the Rams on Sunday for our live live streamed post game show.
Mattie
Dan Bernstein Unfiltered has been brought to you in partnership with my bookie Dan.

Dan Bernstein and producer Matt "Mattie" Abbatacola deliver a classic, wide-ranging conversation focused squarely on the Chicago Bears’ playoff run and their quest for civic pride and support.
