Maddie
Dan Bernstein unfiltered here on 312 sports. Brought to you in partnership with my bookie Bernstein and Abaticola with you and I'm now, Maddie with you on the potential opposing quarterback the Bears could face at noon Sunday at Soldier Field. You said you wanted it to be Aaron Rodgers.
Dan Bernstein
I do.
Maddie
I had said yesterday let this cascade of backups and rogues and ne' er do wells opposing the Bears at quarterback continue and let it be Mason Rudolph. And now that I've had a chance to sleep on it, I'm wrong, you're right. And I would love whether especially if he's playing through something and he's I don't mind that. It's not just about the Bears winning. It's about closing the book on Aaron Rodgers. And I remember so vividly what Corey Wooten did to Brett Favre on the frozen field. I think it was the college stadium, right? They were at PNC Stadium where the University of Minnesota plays their games because the roof had collapsed because of the snow at the Dome. And that was it for Brett Favre that Wooten got him. And he was lying there like, like you've just caught something while ice fishing like, like a perch or a walleye and you set it on the ice. It's the only good thing about ice fishing is you don't need to bring an ice bucket with you. So otherwise you can have it. But there was Farve lying there and it was over. Can something similar happen? And this isn't a Bears rah rah thing. I don't mean this as a Bears fanboy bit. I mean this. I really don't like Aaron Rodgers and I've come to just be so tired of all of it and so tired of everything that he sort of thinks that he stands for and thinks has deep meaning that actually doesn't. And all of the performative stuff that goes on, just let it stop. And if the Bears can be the team that sort of puts an end to that or just has him trudge off the field unbuckling his helmet in in some sort of disheartened way, that would be worth it. Have that happen. That would be really Nice. They've got 44 on this drive alone. Rodgers second and goal. Fautanu with a nice block to the end zone. Rodgers and caught out of bounds by Gainwell.
Dan Bernstein
This is. Here's a look at the play. He takes a shot, couple of defenders landing on top of him, immediately grabs his wrist and brings it to his chest. And this is something we're going to.
Maddie
Have to monitor moving forward.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. So that's from CBS Sports. The game against the Bengals where he did fracture his left wrist, you could.
Maddie
Tell like in the. When it happened, he immediately knew something was. Was up.
Dan Bernstein
Now here's a couple points to make about this. This goes, it's contrarian to everything we said going into the Ravens game where you and I were screaming from the mountaintops, you want the backup players, you want the worst player.
Maddie
Well, that's because that's. It's not a neutral example. There's a. What was a massive differential between an MVP caliber player and a guy who was the fifth quarterback on the Browns.
Dan Bernstein
Right. And he ended up beating the Bears. But again, just at face value, it goes against everything we were saying going into the Baltimore game. And I recognize that. I like you. I want the book close on Aaron Rodgers. And this is not a Matt Eberfluss Bears team. It's not Mark Tressman, it's not Matt Nagy. It's not one of these guys that Aaron Rodgers has owned through his career with the Packers.
Maddie
Right. You can't say that about him. You can't say that about Ben Johnson. You can say it. Everybody else, you can say it about me? You can say it about you. Yeah. You made a lot of Bears people miserable over the years, but not this guy. He didn't care.
Dan Bernstein
Right.
Maddie
He didn't bring that with him.
Dan Bernstein
I want Ben Johnson and Dennis Allen to close the book for us as Bears fans on Aaron Rodgers. So if he doesn't play, it's Mason Rudolph they activated yesterday from ir, or was it last week? Will Howard, their fifth or sixth round pick from Kansas State. Okay. He's. He's a kid that has been learning from Aaron Rodgers.
Maddie
This is.
Dan Bernstein
This is great. So he's in the locker room meeting the media. You know, I'm able to just sit back and kind of just. I mean, I literally have, like, a word document of just, like, nuggets that I get from Aaron every day.
Maddie
You know, just. If I.
Dan Bernstein
If there's something that he tells me or something he says in meetings, I.
Maddie
Just try to write it down.
Dan Bernstein
You know, just have a little bank of the things that I'm learning. So he's getting all the things that he's learning from Aaron Rodgers. He has an actual word document. They made a big thing about it in Pittsburgh, which is just. It's complete horseshit because Aaron Rodgers isn't teaching anyone anything. Now, if this kid is, like, jotting down everything Aaron Rodgers is saying, fine. That's. He can do that. If he's pulling things from that, great. But it's not Aaron Rodgers teaching him or mentoring him. That's not who Aaron Rodgers is.
Maddie
The same image that I get.
Dan Bernstein
I pictured chicken nuggets immediately when he said nuggets. All these nuggets from Aaron Rodgers.
Maddie
I picture Saul Rubinek as W.W. beauchamp in Unforgiven, following around Hackman's little Bill. Just sort of this personal scrivener, his Boswell, his biographer, just writing everything down. Okay.
Dan Bernstein
Yes. In Pittsburgh, they can spin it any way they want. If they think Aaron Rodgers is mentoring this kid, great. He's not. If you want to jot down everything he says, great. Go. Go for it. If you're learning from it, great. If it helps you as a quarterback, awesome. I hope you have a great career. Just not against the Bears. I want the book closed on Aaron Rodgers, and I want it to happen Sunday at Soldier Field, and I want him walking off the field dejected down. Yes.
Maddie
You know that. That unsnapping of the chin strap, like, that's it.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Maddie
I wanted to go signify the ball game is over.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. And to pout and be angry and be upset while his family is in Soldier Field sitting in Bears fan section cheering against him. You know, that's what I want. That's what I want to see happen. Now, if you want to live in the past and be afraid of the right arm of Aaron Rodgers and what he's done, then you haven't watched Aaron Rodgers the last two years.
Maddie
You know what I thought you were going to do to me, what I thought when you were leaning over to hit a button. I thought it was going to be Rogers Cobb. Oh, no touchdown.
Dan Bernstein
And I would never.
Maddie
Chris Conti is spinning around in the wrong county.
Dan Bernstein
No, I'm, I'm more than happy to play the play where he gets injured against the Bengals. I'm not going to relive the, you know, the past horrors of Aaron Rodgers career. And listen, I respect Aaron Rodgers as a quarterback. I think he's a lunatic off the football field and he's a complete weirdo.
Maddie
I also think when I've been talking about beating somebody before the snap, when I've been talking about Caleb Williams graduating, it's Rogers that I picture. If I'm being completely honest, it is I, I compare, when I will scout a college quarterback, I compare the, the arm swing, the release, the way the ball leaves the hand to Aaron Rodgers and the ability to diagnose something pre snap. Say what you want about Brady, but Rogers with some of those surgical slant passes with the perfect timing and accuracy. I can't take any of that away. And I'm not denying any of that.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, and we saw that in the Bengals game this, this, this season with my guy Frankenstein's monster. I mean, he was able to read the Bears defense and get rid of the ball really quick again. It helps having T. Higgins and Jamar Chase. That makes a big difference for you. But it was funny. Ben Johnson talked about that there was a play in the red zone against the. What was this the past weekend? Jesus Christ. Who they beat?
Maddie
The Vikings.
Dan Bernstein
The Vikings.
Maddie
The turning into me.
Dan Bernstein
Yes. The end zone pass that Caleb kind of threw away in the corner. And Ben was asked about it and he said, oh, I'd like to have that one back. It's just that that's a bad play call. Want to see, want to see Caleb overcome that bad play call and get out of it? That's what we talk about with Caleb and that's. I think one of the issues in the red zone is his inability to quickly pick up and read what the defense is doing to know what to do, that, hey, this is a good play. Or if I need to get out of this play and get something that's going to be more beneficial to what we're trying to do in the red zone. But that's what Aaron Rodgers has done. I'm not afraid of Aaron Rodgers right now. I'm not afraid of Aaron Rodgers since became a Jet, now that he's a Steeler. I want Aaron Rodgers on Sunday at Soldier Field. And I want the book shut through Ben Johnson and Dennis Allen.
Maddie
Yeah. I disagreed with you yesterday. And I've learned as I've aged that being able to change one's mind about something is actually empowering. And I changed my mind. You're right.
Dan Bernstein
You still feel the same about Kevin Warren, game ball?
Maddie
No.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, you've changed. You changed your mind on that too.
Maddie
No, I feel worse about it.
Dan Bernstein
Even.
Maddie
The more I've thought about it, I'm even more unhappy about it.
Dan Bernstein
Okay.
Maddie
And I was laughing so hard.
Dan Bernstein
I wish people had shared some thoughts and their opinions on your take on that.
Maddie
It was awesome. Thank you for that. And right before bed last night, when I looked at a comment on the YouTube and someone had said instead of a game ball, they should have given him a shovel. And thank you for that. The commenter got me in trouble.
Dan Bernstein
That's good.
Maddie
Here you go. Here's the game balls. Kevin. Kevin, Your birthday tomorrow. Here. Here's a shovel put in the ground somewhere. That's good. Do. Do something. Do something with that. We're going to get to that in a little bit. What's going on with the Bears and what's going on with a certain little letter in the mail that we all got as Cook county residents? You, as a Lake county resident, probably.
Dan Bernstein
Did not get one.
Maddie
Didn't get the same note. But it brings up something that the Bears are doing that I think deserves attention. One thing also that deserves attention is how bad my DBU picks were yesterday on my bookie.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Maddie
Did you see how bad mine turned out? I did not. That's an all timer.
Dan Bernstein
Is it really?
Maddie
I think I have. I've. I've put in a new marker for the worst possible. Like you should owe the casino even more money than you bet my bookie. If you did, my bookie should call you and ask you if you followed my picks from last night. They should. They should ask for you to just say, hey, it would be the right thing to do to give us more money, because that's how bad it was. I had the bulls losing by 11 to 15 points, second out of a.
Dan Bernstein
Back to back, and they won by.
Maddie
Three in altitude against Jokic and the Bulls won. I still am not sure other than hitting a bunch of threes in one crazy spurt. Javon Carter is my hero. He's. He's just. You talk about a relentless chucker. I want to talk about that, but I had Ashton Genty over rushing yards.
Dan Bernstein
65, I think.
Maddie
Did you see what he finished with?
Dan Bernstein
No. Where'd he finish on?
Maddie
I think he finished with seven.
Dan Bernstein
No, no.
Maddie
Oh, wow. Okay, check it. Just check his rushing total. I swear to God, I think it was six carries for seven yards. Six, seven, six, seven. Are we still doing that?
Dan Bernstein
What do you mean?
Maddie
Are we? The six, seven thing.
Dan Bernstein
Well, we're not still doing it.
Maddie
Six, seven.
Dan Bernstein
But Ben Johnson is.
Maddie
Oh, God. Six, seven, six, seven. How long does that. What's the statute on like meme fad?
Dan Bernstein
I have no idea. But in my household, it will continue as long as I keep getting the reactions I'm getting from my sons and my two stepsons.
Maddie
All right, so are you like the.
Dan Bernstein
Cross eyed looks, the rolling of the eyes?
Maddie
Okay, so they're, they're not laughing?
Dan Bernstein
Oh, no, no, they're not laughing.
Maddie
They're.
Dan Bernstein
They're irritated by it. Jackson always says. And this guy, look at, he's a 52 year old man. That's what Jackson says. The other ones ignore me. They roll their eyes. Okay, if I keep getting that reaction.
Maddie
You got to keep doing it.
Dan Bernstein
I'll keep doing it at home. Yes.
Maddie
Okay. But that doesn't mean the fad is still going. It means you're past it and you're just making them mad, which is proper dad behavior. Yes, it is absolutely the right thing to do. Don't get me wrong.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, no, I'm. I'm in my lane as a dad. But I don't know if it's like the cultural thing for the kids if it's gone and dead because I still see videos on it. So I don't know. But all I know is that Ben Johnson said 6, 7.
Maddie
Here it is, official. Ashton, I got it right.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, yeah, you're right.
Maddie
Six carries, seven yards. Seven yards.
Dan Bernstein
Wow.
Maddie
With a long of 11, so do that math.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, wow, that's. That's no good.
Maddie
That's. That's the old rough one for Ashton Genty got some work that. It was a pass catcher too. I didn't last long in this game.
Dan Bernstein
God bless you for going to it.
Maddie
And also the question is, remember I gave you the night off for CD Lamb and George Pickens. I hope it was worth it. They were Benched for the opening drive because apparently they. They spent the whole. They did the old Michael Jordan, the old whole night out at the casino.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, did they really?
Maddie
Yep. If rumors are true, it went on into the. Not just the wee hours of the morning, but the actual hours of the.
Dan Bernstein
But it did not impact my DBU pick of the first touchdown scored by CD Lamb, which hit.
Maddie
It sure did. Yep. And I reacted at the time when it did because the Raiders decided that even though Max Crosby is out there trying, that the rest of them don't necessarily have to. And the Raiders offensive line is wet toilet paper.
Dan Bernstein
Well, yeah, I mean, you get. You rush for 27 yards as a team. 14 comes from that. From Geno Smith.
Maddie
They can't block. They just can't block. And I keep thinking about some of these Bears wins. In hindsight, we said, look at the records of some of these teams. I know they beat both these teams.
Dan Bernstein
That was the 25, 24 win.
Maddie
Yeah, I know there have been a lot of overs that have been printing this year. 14 teams have hung 40 or more. I think it's actually more than that Now. My bookie is where you can cash in on every one if you like playing overs. It's fun to root for. It's fun to root for everybody scoring game lines, player props, same game parlays, whatever. You ride my bookie. And right now there is a special promotion when you go to MyBookie AG. The promo code for this show, the promo code you're gonna use is dbu. So when you deposit, when you sign up, you're gonna get a bonus bet credit just because you are listening here right now. Dbu, that could be building a bankroll. It could be looking to hit the lotto with Moneybag. You can bet on anything, anytime, any, anywhere with my bookie.
Dan Bernstein
Did you see when I spilled a full cup of hot, hot tea in my lap?
Maddie
I wasn't sure what it was. Yeah, tea better than coffee as far as staining goes.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, it's my jeans.
Maddie
I don't care, but jeans are self cleaning.
Dan Bernstein
It's. Yeah, it was right in the crotchal area too.
Maddie
Really warm you up a little. Little bit. Make sure you enjoy it for a second.
Dan Bernstein
I'm feeling a little uncomfortable right now, though. It's damp. The chair's all damp.
Maddie
You bring an extra pair of pants with you?
Dan Bernstein
I did not. I probably should put a pair of plastic pants because you never know.
Maddie
I have a pair of plastic pants in my car garage.
Dan Bernstein
They're almost dry. I tried to switch Chairs.
Maddie
I have, like, literal plaid. Like, my range. You want to wear rain gear around for the rest of the day?
Dan Bernstein
It's almost drying. Have you ever sat in that chair over there?
Maddie
No.
Dan Bernstein
Why? It's not good.
Maddie
Why?
Dan Bernstein
It's a bad one.
Maddie
That chair's bad chair.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Maddie
I switched, like, an Odyssey chair.
Dan Bernstein
It's so bad that I. I went back to my soaking wet chair instead.
Maddie
That's what I'm sitting in right now, that chair. It's rare to find a bad chair around here. I thought that in our industry, I thought all chairs were always bad and broken and all that. And then I got to Hubbard. I'm like, oh, things get replaced here when they break. I had no idea that that was allowed. I had no concept of that. So.
Dan Bernstein
Was that something new? Because I don't remember ever having bad. Bad chairs, really.
Maddie
Okay. Things were. Things were getting to the point where. And apparently within, I.
Dan Bernstein
Well, I generally didn't. Yeah, I don't remember much being in the studio. I was generally walking in full of rage. So I.
Maddie
You're too angry to notice. Too angry to notice your chair didn't work.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Maddie
Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
I never broke a chair phone, maybe, but Sideswipe.
Maddie
Well, it was two in one trip. Six, seven. It was. Sat down at the theater, went right through and then in. On the airplane, another one bolt shot out.
Dan Bernstein
That was a bad trip for charity.
Maddie
It almost killed Terry. Remember?
Dan Bernstein
I don't remember.
Maddie
The bolt flew out of the chair.
Dan Bernstein
It.
Maddie
Seriously, it almost hit Terry right in the forehead. It was like no country for Old Men. It would have been like Anton Chig with the. With the. What do they call the capture bolt gun? The cattle gun. It was a bolt.
Dan Bernstein
It may not have hurt Terry, though, if it hit him in the head.
Maddie
Oh, hey, buddy.
Dan Bernstein
I don't got a book. Well, no, because he had a book there. So he would have been fine stuck.
Maddie
Right in his book. Oh, boy. I'm all right. I always have a book on my head when I travel. So not why you called. The Bulls win 130 to 127. And the bench. My God, the bench was unreal. If you look at the plus minuses, it tells the story. You don't have to look at the quarter scores. Just look at the plus minuses. And look at what was going on out there. IO dsumu was plus 25 in this game. Wow. But can I tell you who is just an all timer, Just a hero, if you like this kind of guy. Javon Carter. Javon Carter gets folk hero status for his performance in this game. He is. It's like he's some of these. I have a soft spot personally for a professional athlete, A veteran professional athlete who can be kept in a box. And no matter when you need him, you can open the box and he pops out and does what he does and then you put him back in the box for however, how long. Yeah, but he's always kind of there. Should we open the box? I don't know. I think we got to open the box. And they did. And out comes Javon Carter. And he had 15 points in 18 minutes and he shot 10 threes. Yep. The man shot 10 threes in 18 and hit half of them. He also grabbed four rebounds and had an assist.
Dan Bernstein
He was a plus 20 for the game.
Maddie
What a pro. End of the bench journeyman. What does he make? 5 million a year? 6 million a year? Something like that.
Dan Bernstein
I think it's 6, 7 makes it millionaire.
Maddie
Look, your kids aren't here.
Dan Bernstein
Sorry. Okay, that's fair. Fair. I get it. I walk in, that stops. Okay, but you can't tell that the Ben Johnson 6:7.
Maddie
But the moment they put him in the game, like, okay, I see a Kobe white out because they don't want him playing back to backs. Trey Jones still out, hopefully coming back tomorrow against a really fun Portland team. And that's going to be worth staying up and watching that. But here, Javon and everybody else on the team loves him. So they all root for him and he's this little old dude and. All right, go get it. Javon Carter will be if he wants. He's going to be a like 60 year old rec league destroyer. He's going to be like. Who's like white beard, bald and just raining jumpers on people somewhere.
Dan Bernstein
He should hook up with Kevin Love and they can run a rec league somewhere.
Maddie
Yeah, perfect. Yeah, but that like watch out for the. If you remember this 20 years from now, when you're in some rec league and you're like, who did what? Who is this dude? I can tell you right now it's Javon Carter. Because that shot doesn't leave you.
Dan Bernstein
All right, I got a. I got a question for you. Looking up the box score from the game the other night and Vuch had a double. Double. Yeah. Do you know where he ranks in the Bulls all time double doubles.
Maddie
He's gotta be in the top three.
Dan Bernstein
He's number one. Number one for bulls all time with double doubles at 209.
Maddie
Doesn't surprise me at all.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. All right. I'm Going to get you ready for OWC later today.
Maddie
Oh, I've got something.
Dan Bernstein
Great. You have a good one.
Maddie
I have something. It's not for my trivia question.
Dan Bernstein
Okay.
Maddie
I have just something I ran into last night when while watching the game, I get curious about things and I noodle around a little bit on basketball reference. I, I found a list that is, it reads like poetry.
Dan Bernstein
So you guys do a trivia question on owc. Showdown. The showdown. And Jason asks you a question. You ask Jason a question and you try to get the, the correct answers. And I remember as Jason as a, as a young child.
Maddie
Yes.
Dan Bernstein
And you would talk about him reading box scores and knowing standings. And I back, back in the day, I thought, you know what? No chance. No chances. Kids doing this. It's. There's no possibility that that's happening now.
Maddie
That you've heard it a couple times?
Dan Bernstein
Well, no. Then I, then I had Henry. Uh huh. And Henry, the first thing he does in the morning is he's checking box scores. He's looking and he'll text me. If he's not at my house, he'll text me and say, hey, did you see this last night? So and so one this morning it was, I got a text about Lane Johnson being injured and it's a foot injury and he might be out for the year. And then we talked about this Vikings game. Yeah. So I'm like, all right, now having Henry, I went back and I thought, all right, I should apologize to Dan because I'm sure that was probably legitimate and real, which I believed at the, you know, years later now sitting through a few OWCs, it's like rain man with basketball trivia, which is like. And we're going back to the 50s and 60s. He's pulling guys off the top of his head. It's insane. It's ridiculous. So to Prep you for OWC today.
Maddie
Okay.
Dan Bernstein
Vuch leads the Bulls at 209. Can you give me the other nine in the top 10 of any stats?
Maddie
You're not talking just points, rebounds?
Dan Bernstein
I'm talking. No, I'm talking. Yeah. Double doubles.
Maddie
Jordan.
Dan Bernstein
Jordan is fifth.
Maddie
Jordan's fifth.
Dan Bernstein
Yep. With 179.
Maddie
Gilmore.
Dan Bernstein
No.
Maddie
Boozer.
Dan Bernstein
Boozer is on the list at number seven with 117.
Maddie
Loser. 117. Double doubles.
Dan Bernstein
Pippin Pippen is number two at 200.
Maddie
Oh wow. That's more than I thought.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, it was. I was surprised to see 200.
Maddie
Trying to think it just like it's a function of total games played. There's probably some People who are just like around a long time that amassed some of these. What about Noah?
Dan Bernstein
Noah is 4 at 187. And I'll tell you. So the ones you don't have, 3, 6, 8, 9 and 10. Have all played in my lifetime. Watching the Bulls.
Maddie
In your lifetime.
Dan Bernstein
So I started watching the bulls in like 1983.
Maddie
All right, is Horace Grant on there?
Dan Bernstein
Horace Grant is 3, 194.
Maddie
All right, so I've got the top five. I got Vuch, Pippin, Grant, Noah, Jordan.
Dan Bernstein
Yep.
Maddie
And then you said Boozer was 6.
Dan Bernstein
Boozer was 7.
Maddie
Loser was 7. So I need 6, 8, 9 and 10. Yep. We. I would say one of these guys.
Dan Bernstein
You hate with a passion.
Maddie
Oh, Lou.
Dan Bernstein
All day, number nine.
Maddie
I just. I don't want people to. I love you.
Dan Bernstein
I know.
Maddie
You fun of me, right? I know, I know I am. I know, I know. You've brought great joy to this old Italian stereotype. No, don't. You know, I. I am. I know. I know I am. So 8, 6, 8, 6, 8 and 10. Because is anybody with assists at like 6, 8 and 10, is it going to be. Is Bob Love on there?
Dan Bernstein
Nope.
Maddie
Chet Walker?
Dan Bernstein
No. Remember?
Maddie
But your lifetime.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, but for me, watching. Me watching. I've watched all these guys play.
Maddie
Watching.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Maddie
Did Derek do it with assists?
Dan Bernstein
He did not.
Maddie
Heinrich?
Dan Bernstein
Nope. I think this number six is points and rebounds.
Maddie
Points and rebounds. Is it Taj Gibson?
Dan Bernstein
Oak Tree.
Maddie
Oh, he was. Yeah. I guess he was there long enough. Okay.
Dan Bernstein
And then eight is a guy who's also number three all time on the Lakers list.
Maddie
Gasol.
Dan Bernstein
Yes, with 100. And then number 10 is Elton Brand.
Maddie
Okay.
Dan Bernstein
So when I was going through this.
Maddie
I'm really surprised Jordan didn't have more in some, you know, either assists or rebounds. More than 179.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Maddie
With all the games that he played.
Dan Bernstein
And Gasol surprised me being up there with 100. So I went over to the Lakers list to see where he falls on the Lakers and he's at different list. He's at number three at 215.
Maddie
On the Lakers, he's number three.
Dan Bernstein
Yes. Behind Magic, who has 408. And Shaq, who at 365. Lamar Odom at 202 AD with 196. LeBron. 194.
Maddie
Wow.
Dan Bernstein
Kobe. 176. Vlade. 172. Andrew Bynum rounds out the top 10 with 119.
Maddie
Really?
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. No.
Maddie
Elgin Baylor?
Dan Bernstein
No. Do you know, I would have thought.
Maddie
For sure Baylor was on there.
Dan Bernstein
Who's the all time NBA leader in double doubles.
Maddie
Kareem.
Dan Bernstein
The only guy that I've ever owned a college basketball jersey for Wake forest.
Maddie
Duncan. Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
841.
Maddie
That's right. Because Kareem didn't play freshman year. They had a freshman team. Is that right? No, I know the rules were different and they had a. There were certain. There was like a freshman eligibility rule. Then they changed the dunking rule. No. So Duncan is number one all time in college double doubles. Wow. Wow.
Dan Bernstein
That's NBA.
Maddie
Oh, he's NBA.
Dan Bernstein
All time NBA. 841. No, I just. It's the only college jersey I've ever owned was Tim Duncan. Because I liked Tim Duncan.
Maddie
Really?
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. Isn't that weird?
Maddie
Yeah. Yeah. That's legit weird.
Dan Bernstein
It's totally weird.
Maddie
Nobody likes Tim Duncan that much.
Dan Bernstein
I loved Tim Duncan.
Maddie
Why?
Dan Bernstein
I just did.
Maddie
Okay.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Maddie
I'm not saying you're not allowed.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Maddie
And it's.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. It's really weird. The only college basketball jersey I've ever owned.
Maddie
Yeah. What motivated you like to like Tim Duncan that much? I don't know.
Dan Bernstein
I just. I like the way he played.
Maddie
Little turnaround bank shot. Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
And he wasn't. He wasn't like a. He wasn't an asshole.
Maddie
Right?
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Maddie
But. Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
And like I don't be like I'm. Look, I'm.
Maddie
I'm representing.
Dan Bernstein
Like I don't like Wake Forest by any stretch or I'm not a Wake Forest fan.
Maddie
It's a great campus.
Dan Bernstein
I couldn't even tell you what's their mascot. Isn't. It was like. Right.
Maddie
Demon Deacon.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Maddie
So that was. That was. Jason's initial first choice was Wake Forest after we visited there. And it's basically. I can only describe the Wake Forest campus. It's essentially the entire campus is like the most gorgeous golf pro shop you've ever been in.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, seriously.
Maddie
That's what the campus feels like. It feels like you're pulling up to a beautiful golf club that you're. It's some private golf club that somebody is allowing you to play. And the entire campus is just various offshoots and annexes to the clubhouse. That's what it feels like. It really is quite a nice place. I'm looking at this at the Bulls box again. So Javon Carter, my hero Dale and Terry got five minutes of run and he was just running. He was a plus 18 and he was out there running around. The other thing I loved from this game. Patrick Williams got knocked on his ass. He was kind of double fouled there was a reach in and then somebody came, they put a hand across his face and I believe they called Tim Hardaway Jr. For a flagrant one on the pull. And he got mad, got angry. He got. Patrick Williams got, got up like, what are you doing? I'm like, hey, how about it? And everybody rallied to him. I'm not asking for a fight, I'm not asking for stupidity. But that bull's response was, it was kind of nice to see that nobody was happy with him being treated like that. And they, and they got up and reacted in a way that showed they actually cared.
Dan Bernstein
You've mentioned a few times this season so far with, with Patrick Williams and he's kind of little bit trying.
Maddie
Yeah, he's trying. He's. He's actually jumped up and grabbed rebounds and even though he's missed a couple shots, he had a really nice medium range jumper, hard dribble, pull up jumper. And I know nobody wants to take that shot anymore because it's only worth two and it's defended often, but every once in a while, if they're going to give that to you, I'm not impressed with Denver's defense and maybe they just want to play defense in the playoffs, but they do a lot of standing and they give you a lot of space and sometimes they'll play a little bit of zone where, you know, you go elbows, blocks, high, low, there's. And it's kind of hard because I'm trying to sit through the amount of time that Stacy is pining for bad shots. He loves bad shots. He loves contested post ups. And I keep saying, no, they're going to take threes. It's what they do. The Bulls take a lot of. They're a five out team. They play five out. They're looking for threes. They're hunting threes. They shot 53 of them. Wow. They made 19 of 53 for 36%. They shot 53 threes and making 19 is why they won. It's okay. It's okay. They had 40 points in the third quarter. That's why they won.
Dan Bernstein
Patrick Williams, first round, number four overall. Number four overall. And this is fourth, fifth year, I think fifth. And he's now jumping and trying. That's an issue.
Maddie
It's. Yeah, but you know, he's not overpaid. If he's going to be a 3 and D guy. He also hit a logo 3. If he's going to be a valuable 3 and D guy, then he's not overpaid in NBA money. He's just not. But this was a win I didn't think was coming in any way, shape or form. They are. The Bulls are in amazing cardiovascular shape. They can run all day and this is the second game at altitude going from Utah to Denver back to back. It's crazy and I know the Nuggets were coming. This is their first home game after a road trip, which is always a usually plays like a road game as far as the performances go. I didn't expect it to go this way. Pretty incredible, especially with Jokic doing whatever he wants out there. 36 points, 18 rebounds, 13 assists, two blocks and a steal. Write her out his averages. I mean this, this dude is just an absolute monster. Ridiculous. But I'll be watching closely when the Bulls are at Portland and see if they can keep this up for a third game. Hopefully they get some of these guys back. I think Kobe White probably should be playing in that one. And you know what helps with your your energy. You know how you have energy Protein Bar and Kitchen. If you want the kind of meals and the kind of snacks that you don't come away feeling, oh God, I can't believe I ate that. The perk Shake, which is cocoa malt, espresso, whey protein, chocolate whey protein, and almond milk. Instead of a giant frap, you can get 24 grams of protein.
Dan Bernstein
So I made myself try something new. Last night, I stopped on the way to the train and got some bowls, brought them home for dinner.
Maddie
Yeah, you said you were gonna do that.
Dan Bernstein
I got the classic buffalo bowl.
Maddie
Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
So it is roasted chicken, blue cheese, celery, organic rainbow carrots, romaine organic quinoa, which I love the quinoa. And then their traditional buffalo sauce.
Maddie
Okay.
Dan Bernstein
It was fantastic. It was so good. And the buffalo sauce had just the right amount of heat. Like, it was hot enough to know that you're eating a good buffalo sauce. Because some of the, you know, some of the buffalo sauces are just. It's just sauce they throw on and blanket the chicken because the chicken's not good.
Maddie
Yeah, I'm pretty particular about mine. It also has to have a real buffalo sauce. Has a. Has a buttery flavor to it too. Yeah, that's gotta. You know, that's gotta touch all of those different. Check those.
Dan Bernstein
No, there's a creaminess to it with the vinegar, but then there's a little bit of heat. So it's all. And it was. It was fantastic. The blue cheese, I love the. The rainbow carrots.
Maddie
It's just.
Dan Bernstein
It's really good. So now I think I've. I've had 1, 2, 3, 4 of the bowls. I'm always going through the menu here. I got. I gotta. But the Chicago Med bowl, Natalie had that minus tomatoes. And, you know, they love, you know, whatever your order is, they're happy to do it for you, which is great. So I've had the classic buffalo, the Chicago Med, the Mexicali. I need to try. I think I'll do the miso salmon bowl next. I'll give that a try.
Maddie
Is that the special for the fall menu? Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
The salmon brown rice, roasted sweet potato, which I love. Roasted broccoli, braised kale, creamy miso chia dressing, and crispy onions. Man, it just sounds good.
Maddie
Sounds amazing. That's protein bar and kitchen. The PBK app, the code DBU50. Did you get your Cook county tax bill? I know I got the second installment of mine. Couple things here. One, don't double pay it. I know there are people that make that mistake. If you have it set up that your property tax bill comes through your mortgage escrow. I know that there is a feeling when you see the bill.
Dan Bernstein
Get a bill, and you're like, oh, My God, I gotta get it out, right?
Maddie
Don't double pay it, because it's a bitch to try to claw back that money.
Dan Bernstein
Well, I think if you double pay now, it just goes right to the Bears.
Maddie
Is that right? Yeah, nobody told me that. So I think you should avail yourself. Also, that I know people hear the idea of a property tax appeal and say, well, I can't hire a lawyer. I can't afford it. There are a lot of really reputable firms that do good work, that all they do is they take a chunk of your savings from. You only pay if you win your appeal, and they'll take, like, half of the first year or something like that. It's an automatic thing. I've used the same firm forever, but just go through, you know, Better Business Bureau or look at reviews out there. Don't get scammed. But it isn't like it's incredibly difficult or expensive to appeal your. Your Cook county property taxes because it's. It's worthwhile to do that, even if you're saving a couple hundred here, a couple hundred there. It adds up. What's interesting is that as at the same time, we are looking at our Cook county property tax bills, and sadly, a lot of the huge jumps in property taxes have come from some of the gentrifying areas that aren't really seeing the benefits of some of those increased valuations yet. That there's been a rise in value and speculative value in some areas of Chicago where they're still waiting to say, look, it doesn't feel like my property is worth this at the moment. I read a story in the Tribune. There was one woman who spent a lot of time trying to clean up a block in Anglewood, and she did. And there's sort of no good deed goes unpunished because they cleaned up the block and the valuations went up. Her tax bill went through the roof. But that's unfortunately the reality of some of this, with businesses being able to afford more lobbying, more protection, et cetera. Which brings us to your Chicago Bears. As we're looking at these bills and as we're saying, boy, is our property really worth this? And why doesn't it feel that way? And there are people saying, well, how can I maybe borrow against this? What does this asset mean? If all of a sudden my property is here valuing it like this, and I'm paying these taxes on it? Is this improving the schools? Where is this money going as we do this? The Bears have been doing everything in their power to get out of their fair share of property taxes or define what fair means in a way that is more beneficial to them when it comes to what they're paying Cook county out in Arlington Heights. And I didn't know this, but apparently we know that Kevin Warren and the Bears had set up this showdown at the fall veto session saying this was it. They're bringing the legislature back together to reconsider some things in this two week window. And now it's time to ram through this mega project deal that really was a way for the Bears to get a huge discount on the property taxes they would pay. And it never came up. Non starter, never happened. Bloomberg reported the Bears did send representatives to Springfield to lobby to be there. But not George McCaskey and not Kevin Warren. Really I don't know if you're Kevin Warren and you were hired to do just that, to get this thing built that you delegated that authority downstate, that political authority. It's one thing for McCaskey to delegate it. That's what I thought the hiring of Kevin Warren was where George McCaskey maybe had the self awareness to understand. Look, I'm not, even though I was a prosecutor, wasn't he a prosecutor that he didn't have the persuasiveness or the personality or maybe the sharp elbowed ability to get down to Springfield and argue his own case and present his case. So look, here comes Kevin Warren to be the sales guy, to be the front man, whatever he's got to do. And his and his photographer is there with his bible to always have him pictured being as pious as he could possibly be. And he's got his band and whatever it might be. He didn't even go. He didn't go. The president of the Bears who's got one job didn't go make his case. I don't get that. I don't understand. And I would love to ask why he wasn't too busy to be in the locker room after every win. I don't need that. We said it yesterday. How can you not go to Springfield? You said that you needed this to move forward. His words. We must have this to move forward. And you couldn't even get it on the agenda. You couldn't even get it to a vote. It was tabled. It didn't exist. It didn't happen. And even if you know that's the case, how can you not be there? McCaskey hired you to do this and instead you've got lower level functionaries, lower level factota that are there representing the Bears. Say what you want about Jerry Reinsdorf, and I'm not gonna. You are. Whatever opinion you may have over lo these many years. But when he tries, he calls the governor and says, can we have lunch? Let's have a bowl of soup. Like, at least he will make his own case. He doesn't send somebody there. He always does it himself. Even in his 90s, he will do shocks me that at a moment where they're there, the governor's there, the legislation is there, they're all there. And you don't go, it makes it pretty tough to then hear all of the public stuff and all the PR campaigns and everything they do with their website and their friendly outlets and trying to sell and sell and sell and sell. The person you gotta sell, the people you gotta sell are the people with votes. Go lobby. Go put the shoe leather time into this. Have the meetings, sit down, have a bowl of soup. That's politics. That. That's business. You gotta look people in the eye. At least Reinsdorf does that.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. I think there's one thing to learn that Kevin Warren needs to realize, and we've said this before on the show, that the Bears getting a new stadium built anywhere is not as important to the people that make the decisions about the financial decisions that he wants. It's not as important to them as it is to him. It's just not. And if you don't actively have that role in trying to make your case, it's going to be really hard to accomplish.
Maddie
The relationship building's got to be.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, that's. That's how Chicago works. That's how Illinois works.
Maddie
It isn't just Chicago, Illinois. I mean, you're talking about.
Dan Bernstein
Well, I know, but we're talking specifically to what he's trying to do. Show up.
Maddie
Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
It's how the state works.
Maddie
Show up. And we know Michael McCaskey was bad at it, but at least he tried. And he was too much of a weirdo and they had to get him out of there. And Daley hated him. And that's where Ted Phillips came in. And they realized that if a deal was going to get done, it was. But they had to know what the relationships were. Daley didn't want to work with Michael. Daley would work with Ted. Yeah, but you got to figure these things out. They're not even there yet. They're not even there. You've got to have that meeting. Go to Manny's, have a corned beef sandwich. It's not that you can sit down, you get in line at Manny's. You get a tray, the other person gets a tray. You get a sandwich. Gino is on the slicer. He gives you a big latke and you get a pickle and you sit down and you eat and you talk a little bit. Steak dinner. Boom. Come on. Dan Bernstein
I just saw online that it's Caleb Williams birthday today.
Maddie
Hey wait, it was Kevin Warren's birthday and now Caleb Williams birthday. Yeah. And he's 24.
Dan Bernstein
It's really startling. I looked up his birth date in November 18, 2001. It's really unsettling to see that because it just is. It just is. You know, we have nine. 11 is like a really significant marker in time. It's a day obviously, that Americans will never forget. But more specifically, what I was doing that day, what you were doing that day, we were working. We were in the studio on Belmont, and it happened right as our show was transitioning to go on the air. And the things I was doing on the phones that day, it was just. It's something I'll never, ever forget. And then driving out of the city, the city was empty.
Maddie
I was calling Beth to get her out of the Aon building.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, yeah, she was working. And we had. We had people transitioning into NBC tower that were being evacuated out of there at the same time we were having. We were in Belmont transitioning into NBC. And it's just. To see someone born after Nidal, it's just so.
Maddie
I know.
Dan Bernstein
So young. Jesus, he's so young.
Maddie
Wait for me. It's when my doctors are really young, that's when it really hits home. Because you look at your doctor is your doctor. You defer. Because they spent all that time. They're smarter than you are, and they know everything. And when you're dealing with a specialist and you're like, you're my doctor.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Maddie
My.
Dan Bernstein
My primary care physician. Very young is new as of like four years ago and younger than me. And it's. It's unsettling at first. One thing that I thought was. Was interesting too, about the sports world and aging. The players that I've watched when they're. When they've. Their career is over playing and now they're like executives. Like guys you watched every day, you watch their. And you watch their full career. And now at General Managers 52, I'm watching guys kids and like their kids careers are like in the latter half and it's like, oh, man. Like, I remember your dad playing now. Your career is like winding down. Like you're the veteran on the. On the team.
Maddie
Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
It's just. It's weird.
Maddie
Yeah. That happened to LeBron. I forgot whose kid it was that he was guarding and he was like, yeah, this is cool.
Dan Bernstein
You played again.
Maddie
You played against my dad.
Dan Bernstein
He's like, really? Okay.
Maddie
Imagine how that feels.
Dan Bernstein
So. Happy birthday. Caleb Williams, 24.
Maddie
Today I mentioned that I was going to do a candy bar review on this show.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. You sent me a picture.
Maddie
I posted this last night and I.
Dan Bernstein
Was the size of a Yule log.
Maddie
Yeah. I Had two of them.
Dan Bernstein
Did you really?
Maddie
Yeah. Wow. It's impressive, because if I do it, I gotta do it. I can't just. That's my dessert. And they were two for four dollars at Walgreens.
Dan Bernstein
Okay.
Maddie
I thought, all right, I'll grab a couple of Snickers pec. Okay. Because I love, love, love pecan pie. And I will often rescue at the back of Mariano's. When. Do you ever see those mini, like, pecan tartlets?
Dan Bernstein
Yes.
Maddie
The little ones in the plastic clamshell with a little carve out for each of them. They kind of line up, and I just sort of pop them. You know, I love those. And sometimes, like, the mini pecan pie, it just. Look, it just needs a home, and I need to adopt it, and I need to bring it home with me and give it a place to live for a little while before I consume it. And so I thought this would be perfect. I love Snickers. I love pecans. It's good, but not great. Okay. And the reason is. And I. And I thought it through. I was taking mental notes as I was. As I was going through it, and it was. It was good. It was good. Peanuts are so entwined in the identity of a Snickers that, to me, it ceased to be a Snickers. And I thought when I was done, I realized what it was. It's not a pecan Snickers. It's a Milky Way with pecans added. Okay. That's what I noticed. That if I. If somebody, if blindfolded, just gave me that candy bar and said, take a bite and tell me what this is, I would. I would. I would absolutely say, oh, it's a Milky Way, but they put some pecans in it. Because there's just something so inherently important to eating a Snickers. To have the toothsomeness of the peanuts, because pecans are softer. And the whole idea of chowing through and biting through a Snickers is just different. So that's. I had a little problem with the identity of it and kind of getting my head around that. But standalone, in and of itself, on its merits, it's good.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, that's the same thing. I've had the Snickers with almonds, which I really like, because I always like the Hershey's bars with almonds, but the Snickers with almonds, yeah. Very good candy bar, but not a Snickers. And if you were to just hand it to me, like, unwrapped, I would think, oh, this is a good. It's A good candy bar, but you wouldn't identify it as a Snickers because it is that true identity with the peanuts.
Maddie
And the one thing I noted was when you take a bite and pull it away in a Snickers, you don't often get the caramel string because of the bite through and because of the positioning of the peanuts. It might happen on a commercial, but you don't usually get the gooey caramel string. And on a Milky Way, you do.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Maddie
Because you don't. You don't have those peanut interruptions there. And there was more of that string in the. In the Snickers pecan, allowing the caramel to stretch because of the consistency of the nuts. Yar. So that's why it reminded me also of a Milky Way.
Dan Bernstein
What did you. So The Snickers, the two 1 pound.
Maddie
Candy bars.
Dan Bernstein
That was dessert for what? Dinner.
Maddie
What did you eat? I had.
Dan Bernstein
So what did you eat? Then you throw down two pounds of Snickers.
Maddie
There was a deal on my Domino's app. I just got. I was lazy and I made Zoe. I had to iron chef her a dinner and I didn't want to cook and I was just lazy. So. And it was getting later and some things were closed, so there was a deal on Domino's, a national coupon where you could get two things for $6.99 each.
Dan Bernstein
Okay.
Maddie
So I got a medium pepperoni and bacon pizza and an order of wings. All right. And I ate it all.
Dan Bernstein
All right.
Maddie
And then your Snickers and then those two share size Snickers. Why is that funny?
Dan Bernstein
Because I just. It's.
Maddie
No, it's just great. My.
Dan Bernstein
I guess I love that you. I love that you're so thoughtful with your desserts. Like you have to. You always have dessert.
Maddie
I've started that.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Maddie
I think in my older age.
Dan Bernstein
Did it start with ice cream or was it always like.
Maddie
Yeah, it might have been. No. Part of it is rescuing. Part of it is feeling like I got a deal when I find, like those. Yeah, like those afy tapple donuts or something. Part of it really is the thrill of the house.
Dan Bernstein
So the excitement. Yeah, okay. That's what it is.
Maddie
It's. Part of it is the joy of. Ooh, Ooh. I got this. I got this. Oh, breaking news. I buried the lead. I got a thing of organic truth arugula. You know, the tub. It's usually like 3.99. Whatever it is. The tub of arugula. It was on sale on a Sunday night for 135 okay. I had a $1 off coupon for a, like, simply organic or simple truth organic, whatever it is. And I had a 55 cent off coupon for the same thing. Both coupons took. I was paid 20 cents to have that arugula.
Dan Bernstein
Wow.
Maddie
How about that?
Dan Bernstein
Like, that's an all.
Maddie
That's an all timer. Yeah, they gave me 20 cents.
Dan Bernstein
Both coupons shouldn't have worked, though.
Maddie
They did.
Dan Bernstein
For one item.
Maddie
They did all right. I scanned them.
Dan Bernstein
They really wanted to get rid of that arugula, apparently.
Maddie
Yeah. Probably something wrong with it.
Dan Bernstein
Right?
Maddie
Well, that's the special pesticide one. Yeah. We'll pay you to eat that.
Dan Bernstein
What's the. What's the thing that always. You find it happens in, like, bagged lettuce and stuff.
Maddie
Wisteria.
Dan Bernstein
Is that what it is? Or E. Coli or is that.
Maddie
Yeah, E. Coli. No, I think it is E. Coli. I think you're right.
Dan Bernstein
So maybe that was the E. Coli version.
Maddie
I've eaten a bunch of it. So far, so good. I think I'm okay.
Dan Bernstein
So they paid you 20 cents. They take that arugul off their hands?
Maddie
They paid me 20 cents. The Kroger Corporation paid me 20 cents to do that. Congrats. So, yeah.
Dan Bernstein
Thank you. That's a big win.
Maddie
Thank you. I know. Certainly better than my DBU picks.
Dan Bernstein
And you probably wouldn't even like. Even if you didn't want arugula, you would buy. You would have bought that.
Maddie
Just because we go through a lot of arugula at our house. A lot of my pasta.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, yeah. You put it in pasta.
Maddie
Use arugula. Cause it's so at the end of the pasta, you throw it in and it wilts and it makes every. You know, it's just good.
Dan Bernstein
You don't do it with spinach?
Maddie
No, I usually use arugula or baby kale, occasionally spinach, but some. Zoe doesn't like spinach because she choked on a piece of spinach one time. So she refers to it as murder spinach. And she says I tried to kill her with spinach by making her choke on one of the stems. So she much prefers the baby kale or the arugula.
Dan Bernstein
Got it.
Maddie

Podcast: Dan Bernstein Unfiltered
Host(s): Dan Bernstein, Matt "Maddie" Abbatacola
Date: November 18, 2025
Episode Theme: Can the Bears finally "close the book" on Aaron Rodgers at Soldier Field? Plus: Bulls’ surprising win, property tax angst, stadium politics, and some surprising culinary and candy tangents.
In this episode, Dan and Maddie tackle whether Aaron Rodgers will play against the Bears this Sunday and explore fan fatigue with the legendary QB. The hosts also dive into the legacy of Rodgers vs. the Bears, debate quarterback preferences, discuss the Bulls’ unlikely win at altitude, vent about property taxes (and the Bears’ stadium drama), and share plenty of Chicago sports culture and life banter. The show is rich with witty asides and the classic Dan Bernstein no-nonsense, slightly irreverent tone.
